I did this for my E46 M3. But my water pump was 100%. I replaced all belts and both tensioners and all pulleys. New thermostat. New O rings. New sensors.
Fixed power steering pump mounting by adding proper length bolts.
    De-greased everything. Cleaned MAF sensor.
303 Protectant on everything. SOAKED belts in 303 prior to installation. Pulled radiator and flushed. Cleaned fins on OIL COOLER!! This helped!

I have been watching your DIY videos for a while and they are very informative. I just bought a 2005 E46 M3 and I intend to use your videos to assist me in getting the M3 in great running order. You are awesome and keep up the great work!

Question, I noticed the gasket you are replacing is not the metal one..did you experience ang issues using these instead of the metal ones ?

Watched this ages ago but came back to it to make sure there is enough room to remove just the fan clutch itself and not the entire shroud housing before upgrading my pulleys with underdriven ones from Rogue Engineering. Can see quickly at 4:18 there is just enough wiggle room to drop the fan and get access to the pulleys. Thanks again!

    • @JohnSmith-mh1mp

How did the pulley change go? I have to do the same soon and am looking for the easiest/best way. Also, do you have those two lower screws on the shroud?

Hi Ankur, really great "How To" video mate, thank you. Can I ask what the symptoms were for this car as I can see the same blue/white spray from the fan on the plastic shroud of my M3. Is it an easy diagnostic that I need to replace the water pump? Mine is 2006 but only has 82,000klms (51,000Miles). Thanks in advance, Andre.

How would you know (outside of the obvious (leak, drip, etc at the pump)), that your water pump is or isn't circulating? Recently I noticed there's no recirculation at idle via the small hose to the reservoir and it tends to run "hot" at idle/stop. It's cool or normal as I drive. Someone mentioned the secondary HVAC water valve and solenoid. Thoughts? I've also noticed the Evap fan running on-off with the heat on A/C Off. Thanks for the excellent videos!

  • @sarcastixx74

Great vid and well demonstrated as usual mate. Just one thing though, in the TIS it explicitly states to *not* open the bleeder screw on the S54 as the system is supposed to be self bleeding? I'm sure that the plastic pipe that it sits in is the same one throughout the E46 range to save on manufacturing/development costs and that's the only reason that it is there on the M3 models. That said, opening the screw would be very unlikely to have done any harm and the way you demonstrated would do nothing bad to the system.

How important is it to change the expansion tank while doing this whole job? M3 has its expansion tank in the back compared to regular E46 so it does not get affected by the heat of the engine as much and plastic doesn't get as brittle. Thoughts? Thanks

    • @ShopLifeTV

Thank You! You can remove the side parts of the fan shroud without removing the fan, but the main shroud will require the fan to be removed.

BMW uses a lot of those Plastic Rivets in various places. Husky 1000014633 from Home Depot. I think
they call it a Tack Puller. Works cool for these. I took ours and slightly filed the 'V' into more of a 'U'
    shape. 6 bucks... ;)

good tip to remove rubber hoses is to use a bicycle spoke. slide it in then spray some teflon lube like gt85, then rotate the spoke.

Question: On a lot of American cars people will drill a small hole in the thermostat to allow air to pass through when bleeding the system, can this be done on a BMW without screwing anything up?

Just my 2cents...I appreciate the "calmer" narration. I'm guessing that you added the narration to the video afterwards? Give your camera crew a night out of the shop for doing such a good job "filming". (Maybe a comedy club?)... Always wishing you both well, remember, all work and no "play" makes fluffy have dull owners... Best Regards...

    Hello mate
I have two questions for e46 330i automatic
    1. My oil sensor needs replacing. It’s expensive to replace.are there any dangers if I left it unrelated?
    2. The reader is also showing error P0705 gearbox switch. Is it easily accessible to replace or gearbox has to be dropped?
I can’t see any YT vids on this
3.a suggestion.: why don’t you do a special video on e46 sensors. Show the location of all of them and how to replace.bmw have too many sensors

My car was over heating and underheating last year during hot days.
I had the thermostat replaced and the issue was fixed!
Starting last week, my car now over heats with the AC on... but only on the hot days with the AC on.
Im wondering what is wrong.. I was thinking maybe its something other than the thermostat HOWEVER when I drive the car during cooler evenings the car is now under-heating again ever so slightly. because temps fluctuate a little high and a little low I'm thinking it must be the thermostat.

I actually like the post-shoot voice-over better. There's very little variation in volume level, which has been a problem with earlier videos. I know you replied "never again" in the comments, but I wish you'd reconsider for some situations.
