  • This week, January 2021, sees the old ex London Transport 38 tube retire from service on the Isle of Wight Island Line, after a working life of 80 years! Happily their replacements are ex District Line D Stock, so keeping up the tradition of the island using second hand stock. Unlike the previous two ex LT trains that was used, these are not tube sized stock but full sized surface stock, the first time such a stock has been used since steam days in 1966! Here we go back to May 1988 and see the Standard Stock at work at Brading and Ryde St John's Road. Back then Brading still had it's passing loop & signal box in use, and the service still ran with three trains off peak, and a lot longer than the 2 car trains of recent years......If you liked the video please subscribe to my channel, there are lots more transport & quirky vids to upload!

      Yes, even 20 years after their introduction they could still muster long trains. Originally in 1967 they were 7 car trains in the summer! When we get out freedom back i hope to visit and film the D Stock in operation....

    I remember as a kid loving the lampshades and the magical thrumming noises these trains made while resting in the stations, with their ‘clerestory’ roofs inside. Amazing that they went so long ago. They were beautiful and full of charm

      Yes, i like them as well especially having an interest in the Underground. My first visit to the IOW was around 1980 when all trains were still around 7 cars long, even here they were still fairly long but the age of the trains was taking its toll in how many cars were still serviceable......

    I always enjoyed one of tricks of the NSE livery: the black band across the cab windows to make the stock look, ahem, 'modern'. This was possibly the most ridiculous attempt at that subterfuge. Great footage. Love it. Thank you.

      NSE's aim was to improve the Network all over, even the Isle of Wight which then had the oldest stock running on BR, as was the case in steam days!

      These trains now do look more modern than the 38 stock did tbh the ryderail painting in replacement of the Gangway door's window and making it all look flat and merged makes is look kinda modern to me, someone too young to see these trains in action

    Its a tribute to the design and construction of these LU sets that they lasted so very long. They might look a bit odd in this setting but the IoW had previously run Mr Adams wonderful O2 Class so it all went to give character to the Island. It also kept trains running - albeit on a very small part of the Island network. Lovely video and memories

    Another great video. The trains featured are LT 1922 stock, or as BR called them Class 485 and Class 486. I remember them, when I was seconded to work in Portsmouth in 1989. Having not been to the Isle of Wight before, I cheekily had a 3.5 hour lunch break and went Portsmouth & Southsea, to Portsmouth Harbour, then the catamaran across to Ryde Pier Head, then to Shanklin and back. The LT 1938 stock then became BR Class 483. Then the rebuilt LT D78 stock became BR Class 484.

      There were several different builds, in different years of what LT called the Standard Stock, although there were many differences in the builds! But they could all be coupled and worked together. I'm looking forward to being able to get over there and see the D Stock/class 484s, i rememebr when the D Stock was new!

    The old 4-VEC and 3-TIS units. Had many a ride on these old things back in the 70/80's. Miss them as much as i will, the 38 stock. Didn't they have an old class 05 over there as well ? Never saw it on any of my trips over there. Another brilliant nostalgic vid. Thanks for sharing.

      @SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The class 05 was very elusive! It mainly ran at night on engineers workings and hid in Ryde Shed during the day. That loco is what made Ryde a Mixed Traction depot, you were trained on DC electric traction plus diesels just to be able to drive the 05!.....

    Oh dear - I can recall the Network Southeast Days out for £1 - anywhere on the system for a quid. Extended from Ipswich to Exeter - and the IOW. Having travelled over there, we stood at Shanklin having got off the train and stood marvelling at the rivets in the bodywork, and several of us working on the railway in the London area at Ilford Depot, mentioned this to the driver who had just brewed the obligatory mug of tea before returning the train to Ryde. On finding out we were more than the average enthusiast, we were invited for a cab ride which was rather interesting. There were 4 of us in the cab which was rather hot due to the weather, and a set of resistance banks behind an Edwardian wooden panel door between the cab and the motor compartment. The most modern thing on it was the windscreen wiper motor. All splendid stuff. At the time, the manager of the Depot was a chap from Ilford, but can't remember his name. Happy days! Thanks for the vid.

      @@SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus All splendid stuff. Can't recall running round at Broxbourne. Life was a bit of a blur! Too preoccupied with chatting to the punters and worrying over the unit breaking down! Must have been mad doing what I did - and some people said so! But there we go, history now. I kept it going for 10 years or so and it provided a little bit of individuality, which sadly will never be repeated. The unit was passed to NRM ownership after the breakup of First GE and Nat Ex took over. Sadly the retrieval by diesel traction from Eastleigh was the last time it turned a wheel on Network Rail lines. How the heck I got away with that on the SW mainline and all the other trips we did with it over the years, goodness knows. The loan to EARM at Chappel didn't work out. Basically I was on my own with it and both the NRM and EARM went through various transitional changes. The general railway environment was also changing, where it wouldn't fit in anymore and it was returned the NRMs' Locomotion facility at Shildon, where it currently resides. Numerous plans to go up to see it and try and find someone to explain how it works and what it is they've actually got (whilst I can remember!), have been thwarted by the current situation. Perhaps I ought to write a book on it! Keep up the good work.

    Sydney has a major area called Ryde to the north west and that was the extent the trams used to go toward the north west until the idiots fully closed the enormous system we had in 1961 and we've paid for that appalling choice ever since.
    Interesting seeing them attempt to modernise these old tube stock's appearance like that as far as 1988.

      @SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, to the guard. When introduced all trains were 7 cars long. Over the years as passenger numbers fell, and the stock fell apart, shorter trains became the norm. They even brought back to life a Control Trailer as they ran out of Driving Motor cars. A CT has a cab but motoring equipment behind it, just seats as like more modern stock.

      @@SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus Yes they were, but they were withdrawn after they were literally falling apart, only 1 unit was still capable of operating and they could no longer run 2 at a time, if you build 10 and use the spare parts of 7 to keep the other 3 in service and give then a massive refurbishment in the 1980s before they enter service, they'll last a while, I bet honestly the D stock will probably last almost as long, me estimates for withdrawl is 2050s-60s. Nobody wants to admit it but most new trains are better than the old ones, that's why they're replacing them. There are exceptions which are, the plastic trains like the 701, 1992 stock ect. but in general most trains are better than what they replaced and should be capable of lasting longer.
