Dropping A Jig Down 600+ Feet! | Slow Pitch Jigging | Hawaii Kayak Fishing

- New spots are always exciting, and what better way to explore than with a jig! The morning started off great with plenty of opelu to go around. Soon after stocking up I pushed out to explore the terrain. There was a lot of great structure including ledges, plateaus, and pinnacles. With the help of my Garmin Echomap UHD2 and G51 Transducer, I was able to get on some fish. Dropping down deep is always a rush, as you never know what you're gonna get, and I just can't seem to get enough of it. I managed to hook into a nice size mahi, a new pb kahala (amberjack) and a few other fish.
Enjoy!

Thanks a lot for watching! 🙏🔥
Hey Big Guy… Love your TH-cam channel👍. Always watching for new videos !
“Just Amazing”, how in the heck are you pulling up these TANKS from the bottom of Davy Jones locker !! WOW !
I’m sure it’s far more exciting then MB waters !
-❤ Jimbo😃…. 👍
Ayyyeeee thanks a lot Jimbo! 🙏🏻 Haha ya it’s definitely a lot different than what I was used to growing up! Never thought I’d have the opportunity to fish for so many different species.
Wishing I could go back to those Hawaii days and jig more lol. Monster Kahala for sure bro.
Ayyyeeeee I hope you get the opportunity to come back brotha! 🙏🏻 If you do, and you’d want to get some jigging action in, let me know because I’d love to hit the water with you! I have plenty of jigging set ups you can use 🤙🏻
Great videos man! Would love to pick your brain on DOs and DON’Ts when it comes to Ocean Kayak fishing (mainly safety stuff). I’ve done many freshwater kayak fishing but never the ocean. I’d like to get some pointers when I get to the islands this July.
Thanks a lot! 🙏🏻 Ya no problem 👍🏻 shoot me a message on Instagram and we can chat!
What's up with the calm water? Been windy as hell of Hilo side.
Man, we had one nice day with a break in the wind but it didn’t even last the full day. By 2pm the wind was gusting and it started raining too. I just got super lucky with a short window. Seems like this was my first calm day on the water this year haha. Hopefully we have some favorable weather coming soon. Thanks for watching 🤙🏻
what do you use to catch opelu?
I use a variety of different grubs and to be honest, haven’t noticed a difference in performance with shape, size and color. All of them are relatively small though, under 1.5 inches. Every time I go I change style and they all work. If the Opelu are biting, they’ll bite anything. If they’re not biting, then you just gotta try and snag um 🤣
Action! 💪
Thanks braddah! 👍🏻 I’m just patiently waiting for the day I catch what I’m looking for in the deep 👀🤣
@@jifishingco they are definitely down there, and the jigs are well proven. Just gotta get lucky!
@@makaimerik I can’t wait! That’s my goal this year.
So kahala no good? You said stinky. Not tasty?
They’re fun to catch because they fight so hard but unfortunately they’re often loaded with worms here in our waters so most people don’t eat them. I’ve heard they’re actually pretty good eating though. I just always release them because I don’t want to chance the worms and kill the fish for no reason.
@@jifishingco copy that. Beautiful fish. So yellow tail and kingfish must be very close relatives. I know yellow tail is sushi quality, but heard kingfish can also be loaded with worms. Interesting.
deep jigging, that sounds like a lot of fun. How do you stay vertical to your jig? Nice Mahi catch!
Aloha from Big Island
@@arboraction1474 They certainly look very similar! Ya it’s unfortunate because they’re so plentiful here. I imagine more people would eat them if they didn’t have so many worms.
@@sonnyd6589 Thanks a lot! 🙏🏻 I try and use the thinnest diameter line I can get away with because that helps cut through any current, and then I also try and use heavy, slender jigs that sink quickly and don’t have much resistance in the water. The key is to know the conditions and match them with the appropriate set up. For example, this day was so calm and barely any current that I could easily fish that wider, stubby pink glow jig I was using in the second half of the video. Whereas if the wind and current picked up, I’d stick with the first, long slender one I was using. Also, the first true slow pitch setup I was using had thinner line compared to the bigger rod I was using after I got broken off. Planning your drift also helps to remain vertical. Hope that helps!

They’re fun to catch! Wish they didn’t have worms though.
