    Lot's of people ask me for draxings and measuremenst. This is difficult becase the DriZzleR gasifier is a very new type of gasifier and still a work in progress. My own gasifier is constantly modified and what is new today is already past tomorrow. But I was thinking why suplieing fisch when I can give you a fishing rod so you can catch fish yourself. This made me making this learning DrizzleR so you can build it yourself and have a start from where you could further develop your own gasifier with your own inventions. hoping of course you would then share them for us all to benifit from. This gasifier is build and asembled in two hours and not much skills are needed. The machine itself is ery easy the operation in DriZzleR mode should not pose big problems neither. Well that is what I hope because i did not yet flared this little one. i hope to do that in the near few days, maybe even tomorrow if only the rain will stop pouring. The gasifier will teach you just the basics. There is no cyclone, no filter, no cooler, no mixer and no connection to an engine. All these things are common knowledge and you can find elswhere lots of informations on that. If your build is ready please tell us about it on our blog; www.thedrizzler.org. Succes and please wait for the next film where i will flare it for the first time

    Looks good Luk. I agree with you that if someone is building a custom gasifier they need to tune it up by reading a flare. The flare is very basic and shows everything one needs to know to start using the gas with an engine.

    • @LukVanhauwaert
      @LukVanhauwaert  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Barry Remainder Barry, Well if you want a full complete image on what is going on in your gasifier you need appart from observing the flare also an pressure drop reader and a thermometer. The latter you can put in the system wherever you want but once put it in a spot it should always remain an the same place. If something is going on inside the first you will notice is a drop in the temperature. Packing for instance is inmedaitly dedected by a drom in temperature, then secon you will notice pressure drop and then a lowering of your flare, To judge tar however or too much soot, that can only be seen in the flare. Over all your testing one should always set the blower at the same pulling pressure. This pulling pressure must be as close too what your engine would pull. A primitive test is let your engine blow a big plastic bag notice the given time and do the same with your blower. The bag must be filled the same time with the blower as with the engine.

      Thnak you for commenting, it sure will be an adventure. Woodgasing is not allways straightforward. Somebody compared it with the woman feelings, sometimes very generous and willing and the other day the opposit. Mind you the most important thing is getting your machine fearcely breathing, meaning your engine must be in mate with your gasifier, so only then you reach the estreme high temperatures needed for engine grade gas. Succes!

    The drizzler pronciple is similar with stratified downdraft gasifier, but with drizzling material, do you think your drizzler can be in bigger size, let say with 25 cm or 40 cm diameter ?

    • @LukVanhauwaert
      @LukVanhauwaert  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Dear Ismail, Yes of course you can upscale a DriZzler, It all depends on your suction force to maintain a full Flaming Pyrolise zone over the entire diameter of your falling tube and avoid a hot spot. Then again you will have to use a powerfull engine wich is ok because you also will produce a big amount of gas.

    I come from TLUD and cannot understand if you can cook and make biochar with this too! Do you have something that explains the basics of what it is, compared to a TLUD that also makes gas? Thanks!

    • @LukVanhauwaert
      @LukVanhauwaert  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Dear Nicolas, this littel learning gasifier is not to compare with a TLUD. It is to learn the principles of a DriZzleR gasifier from wich the aim is to make engine grade gas. Gas that is clean enough to burn in a combustion engine from a cogeneration unit.

    While I don't know if you can reply. Is there any benefit to updraft, top feed?

    • @LukVanhauwaert
      @LukVanhauwaert  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Nathan Tortorich No. Doing so You will not have a gasifier but a normal woodstove. To convert your smoke into burnable gas It has to be pulled through a layer of hot charcoal in order to start the reduction. Ther are however gasifiers working in the updraft principle, but the feedstock is feeded from beneath as well as is the air needed to get the combustion going. Then on top lies a layer of coal where the smoke travels through. The exces ashes and soot are sucked away together with the gasstream. This at least in small scale gasification . Huge instalations where there are some working in updraft top feed are beyond my intrests

      @LukVanhauwaert  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dear Olajide, I do not know what gasifier you have build but I take it for granted you build the learning DriZzleR; I also presume you drive off the gas by an ejector? In that case the start up procedure is the following. (Even if you have build another type od gasifier, most off what I will write aply's also to other designs.
      OK here we go. Fill up your gasifier above the grate with about 25cm clumbs of charcoal, about 1.5 to 2 cm cubicles. Turn on your ejector of fan or blower but not very hard. Light the charcoal untill the whole top is glowing. Drop in a little bit of DRY woodchips or pellets. The smoke that comes out of your flare should be grey and not too white. After 1 untill 3 minutes you should be able to get flame. If it stay' lit you could adjust your compressor of fan or blower a little stronger. If the flare goes out then it is too strong. Beware your flare tube should not be straight at the end. Best screw at the end a wider piece of pipe. F.I. put at an 1 inch pipe a 2 inch niple. That way in the larger end the gas can exspand and mix with air so it ignite better. Awesome! Are people powering cabins with these? I need to generate about 6 KWH/day. If my initial research is close, @ 3lbs of biomass/KWH, an efficient gasifier would need about 18 lbs of feedstock to produce 6 KWH/day. That's 540 lbs/mo. That's a lot of sticks lol. :) Do those numbers sound accurate? And is it really practical to power a cabin using a gasifier or is this more suited for emergency power? Thanks!

    • @LukVanhauwaert
      @LukVanhauwaert  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Paul Ladendorf +Paul Ladendorf Paul, no problem to bring energy and heat to your cabin. You must drive with the woodgas a car engine that in stationary mode drives a generator and the cooling of the engine heat and exhaust through a heat exchanger gives you hot water. See folowing videos. first a test with the engine still in the car th-cam.com/video/COXGDzV629Y/w-d-xo.html and second video the same engine now mounted on a frame th-cam.com/video/eVbqbQUiHHM/w-d-xo.html consumption with a one liter VW polo engine is about 900 grams per kw. With the polo you can produce around 5Kw electra and some 12 Kw hot water.

    • @PaulLadendorf
      @PaulLadendorf 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Luk Vanhauwaert Thanks. Based on the research I've done, the time and/or expense of processing feedstock seems to be the big challenge. No one seems to have a cheap and fast way to do that. Chippers are expensive to buy and operate and just using a table saw would be very time consuming. What is your experience?

    • @LukVanhauwaert
      @LukVanhauwaert  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Paul Ladendorf paul,, I am lucky. I get my chips from a forestworker. He is intrested in my work and suply me with what I need. He sell chips to others for burning. I get them free. The chips ar dry since he brings them in containers to a biogas plant that has exxes heat, Via a big tube the exxes heat is blown into the container. After a week they are bone dry. The easiest wav to heat with wood if one has no suplier is buying pellets in easy transportable bags. for your needs you would need ten bags of 10 kg per 24 hours. luk

    • @PaulLadendorf
      @PaulLadendorf 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      10 bags @ 10 kg each = 100 kg per day to produce 6 KWH? I don't think that's accurate.

    Any risk of explosion in The Drizzler method?

    • @LukVanhauwaert
      @LukVanhauwaert  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you for your reaction. All this years I operate my DriZzlR, I never had an explosion. Mostly explosions in a gasifier occur when there is a build up of gas inside the system. This can happen for instance by a sudden stop of the proces. If then a tiny spark and the smalles little leak introduce air in the system, you go BOOOOM. If the driZzleR sudden stops the accumulate gas find its way out sponatniously through the open top. Then the gasifier goes in updraft and the gas is burned on top of the flaming pyrolise zone.

      Luk Vanhauwaert hi Luk thanks for that answer. Makes sense to me. If i wanted to build a test Drizzler like this but wanted to run it for many hours how would i be able to make sure the grate does not get clogged? Your videos have really inspired me thank you

    • @LukVanhauwaert
      @LukVanhauwaert  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@oriben-shir6742 Yes, but thas does not mean that you can run the gasifier completely without a sort of stirring system that keeps the reduction zone fluffy. Because when your reduction get solid packed it ackt as a lid and the gas trapped under it can not anymore escape to above. But then again if your reduction is that soldid packed your gasifier does not breath anymore and get choked. you can observe that in the flare, all of a sudden the loosely big open flare starts to burn inside your flaring tube with a roaring sound and the flare is very blue and sharp pointed as like in a bunsun burner.

      Luk Vanhauwaert hi Luk, i understand. So i will need a stirring device for this little Drizzler if i plan on using it for long term. Regarding the stirring, how is it possible to keep it airtight? Any recommendations on how to add a stirring device while making sure it stays airtight?

    • @LukVanhauwaert
      @LukVanhauwaert  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@oriben-shir6742 The stirrer has to be operate exstremely gentle. I controle mine with an electronic underpressure sensor. To make the seal airtight, feed a solid rod through a chamber on the end just 1mm lager around the rod but in the chamber some 8 mm lager on all sides. The chamber has to be some 6cm long. Pack the space in the chamber around the rod with square grafit rope, Make a round ring that pushes the grafit rope, and put that ring under pressure. The pushing ring compresses the grafit rope tight against the rod so no air can come in. But the grafit has a sort of smearing function so the rod can still nicely turn.

      Dear Rais, Hard to tell with such little information. You could first widen the end of your flare. When the gas exit in a bigger diameter short tube it will expand and slow down, also it will better mix with air and thus easier ignite. Look at this video th-cam.com/video/-VD08yDuO-I/w-d-xo.html at 2 minutes 30 seconds the flare is visible. You see it goes from a 1 inch pipe with at the end a small piece 2 inch. Hope this helps.

      Have you first filled it up about 10 to 15 centimeter above the grate with charcoal? Charcoal must be about half inch large. Light the charcoal and start your blower to suck the smoke through the charcoal untill the top of the charcoalbed becomes glowing red hot. Only then Drizzle pieces of wood some half to one inch in the red hot glow. adjust the speed of your blower untill the smoke that comes out of your Flare pipe can be lighted and the flare does not goes out. Hope this explanation helps..succes
