I’m a 28 years old living abroad alone. This used to be one of my favorite breakfast growing up in Sri Lanka. Half boiled egg and add salt and pepper. Then eat it with bread. Suddenly I wanted to eat this 11pm and I can’t call my mum cuz it’s 2.30 am back in my country. So watched this video and it came out very very perfectly. I used to think I should put the eggs in boiling water and take out after few minutes. But most time it ended up being hard boiled egg. This method, egg came insanely perfectly. Thank you so much 🖤🫶🏻🇱🇰🇫🇷
My mom use to make this and add cut up toast, butter, salt and pepper. Then mix it all together. She called it soft boiled eggs though. I love it!!! Thanks for the recipe. It turned out perfect.
My grandpa used to make this. Never learned how to make it when he was still alive so when I make it it would be under/overcooked. This one looks like the one he used to make, thanks for uploading this.
My father use to eat 2 half boiled eggs every morning when I was a kid. I couldn't remember how he made them, now I know. Thank you for making this video.
Ive been looking for this method online forever but could never find anything for Half Boiled Eggs! My dad used to make this for me every morning before school. Thanks so much!
Half boiled eggs + kaya toast + kopi O panas....... Breakfast for champion Malaysian style....... Nice vids ....... Been Tried so many time but fail to achieved that consistency..... Definitely will try your method..... Hopefully will come out good result as yours
Very clear instructions and video. It is very important to note that the eggs must be at room temperature (not just out of the fridge). The amount of water is just a guide as it will also depend on the size of the pot you are using. Just make sure that there is enough water so that the eggs are submerged. Another tip for easy-to-peel hard boiled eggs. Again make sure that eggs are at room temperature. Add a small amount of baking soda aka bicarbonate of soda (not baking powder) to the water when boiling. I heard a little bit of salt also works although I haven't tried it. The eggs should turn out with the shells literally falling off easily. If u like, let the boiled egg cool then put in a small glass jar just enough to cover the egg. Add a little bit of water and shake the jar until the shells crack and easy to peel off. Have fun!
Aaah! I used to eat this growing up, but I didn't know the actual name for it! I'd been searching online for years and never found anything other than poached eggs and soft boiled eggs, which were obviously not what I ate as a kid. Fortunately, I randomly found it today!
I just searched half boiled egg because I was craving it.. I love half boiled eggs.. It is a breakfast you can just drink.. Half boiled eggs on toasted bread.. Now I'm hungry
Thank you so much for your tutorial. Infact I was trying all these years to make perfect like what my mum used to do it when I was very young. I remembered that when I was young, I dragged having to eat this. My mum would force me to eat it before I get on the bus to school. Tears would come out. And I had to pinched my nose to swallow it all in one go. But as I grew older as an adult, I had a breakfast in one of the kopi tiam. And had it with bread and coffee. Enjoyed it. Now that I am in Australia, I tried to make it myself and couldn’t get a perfect half boiled to my liking. Thanks again and will try your method which looks so easy. Except that the time soaked is some sort important though.
Here's the way to cook soft boil eggs straight from the fridge and using very little water: - boil about 1 inch of water (it's fast) in a small pot (for 2 eggs); - reduce flame when boil; - remove eggs from fridge and put into the pot; - cover with lid; - wait 4 minutes... half a minute more if you want firmer whites; - cool eggs in tap water and crack and serve. - for hardboiled eggs, time it for 6-7 mins.
Hi and thank you for posting this old receipe. I tried this over 2 days with the following results: - Day 1 - 2 eggs at a time in the rolling pot of water: 1) for 10 mins - egg white and yolk, already firmed, not runny, 2) 8 mins - it looks more like a soft boiled egg, white firmed, yolk soft but firm, not runny, Day 2 - 2 eggs at a time 3) 6 mins - white already turning firm (most of it have to be scoped up from the shell) and yolk about to get firm (ie still soft but not runny), but very slightly runny I also had one for 7 mins, but did not crack it open since at 6 mins, it is already not runny. I was using a 6 inch diameter pot and all the eggs were UK large from the same box as purchased from the market. Results so far is disappointing :( I suspect I have to get it to about 3 mins ?? I also tried your traditional method of putting the eggs in a mug, but I use the same 6 inch pot with hot water from a boiling kettle. But this time I used the eggs STRAIGHT FROM THE FRIDGE and I got the following results: 1) 6 mins - some whites still uncooked 2) 7 mins - about right because still a little white uncooked, but hardly noticeable 3) 8 mins - looks more like a poached eggs with whites soften firmed and yolk still a bit runny. I suspect if I leave it to 8.5 mins, both whites and yolk will be firmed and not runny So I suspect the ideal time for this method is about 7.5 mins (???) Over these 2 days I have eaten 7 half cooked eggs in this experiment with one left over uncracked yet. :)
Boiled water and *stop the heat*. Pour hot water over the eggs and throw. Effectively preheating the eggs (preferably room temperature) and vessel. Pour hot water again to soak the eggs for 5-7 minutes. Size of eggs and relative amount of water matter. Trials and error. Best egg yolks for brain cell regeneration, say 4-20 daily. More for repair and less for maintenance. Cut down diet chicken and farm fish. Choose youngest smallest eggs, the younger the chicks the more nutrition the eggs. SHALOM ALL 💕
I don’t know if you’ve already figured it out, but I’m wondering what you mean by the whites being “uncooked”. These soft boiled eggs aren’t supposed to have coagulated whites (in the video she scoops out some from the shell which isn’t ideal). The entire egg is supposed to be completely runny. The egg white is “cooked” in the sense that it is no longer transparent - it has turned white, but the texture is still liquid and silken. When you beat up the whole egg with dark soy sauce and white pepper, you’re supposed to be able to drink the whole thing down. Anthony Bourdain waxed lyrical about it, asking why not everyone in the world is eating eggs this way. I concur.
Im not Malaysian but my mom would make soft boil eggs when I was small andu favourite thing when it was underboiled and she would give me the delicate whites sticking to the shell. I would call it lick lick. I loved it. Will try this tomorrow
ive heard of soft-boiled eggs still in the shell and my grandmother calls it uovo alla coque! in english we also call it eggs with soldiers (strips of bread) but this looks absolutely delightful and i want to try!
I am back a year later to watch again because i like it so much, i just had a craving for these eggs! I tried in vietnam before and is really nice with toast or bread for a snack
I use the Mug Method to make soft boiled egg for my husband but result not consistent probably I did not use a timer. Personally I never liked soft boiled eggs. When I was young my mum used to make it for me but I always made excuses not to eat them. Even ran to my neighbour's house to escape eating them. 😅
when i was a child my mom who was indonesian born chinese made me egg like this but not with soy sauce, just pepper powder and little bit salt served in small cup. the egg that we, indonesian, use for half boiled egg is free range chicken, the size a little bit smaller. ususally we eat it in the morning as breakfast. right noa it's not that popular anymore i do not know why. some still sell this kind menu at side road food stall or 'jamu' shop. i think british people also enjoy this menu, they even have small cup for serving it. the cup the size of half egg, they put the egg with its shell stand up inside the cup and they break the top shell to scoop the egg. they also use pepper powder, and not soy sauce.
Yes, this the correct way to it the malaysian way of Half Boiled Egg. The time will depends on the size of the egg. Free range of kampung chicken have smaller size thus the time must be below 7 minutes. Amount of water will subject to the number of eggs you use. Enjoy your breakfast...
Watching this at the hotel, only have salt and pepper packets from McDonald. Still good though dipped the half boiled eggs with some soft bread rolls. My hun likes it with just honey. Thanks for this nostalgic recipe :-)
Love my soft boil eggs EXACTLY this way. Add a some pepper and "must have" light soya sauce. At times I also like it with malay style soya sauce "Kicap Tamin". Equally delish wt toasted bread and kopi O
I love these kinds of eggs, since seeing them in vietnam. Brits like soft boiled egg and soldiers (slices of toast or bread) but i could have a loaf with 2 or 3 of these eggs
If you put vegetable oil on you finger and just rub it in the inner rim of the pan, it will never boil over. I do this with spaghetti, potatoes, eggs and anything boiled in water. Because oil is thicker then water, the water can"t get past the oil.
Many thanks. Didn't know that it is so easy. If I have 4 eggs (50-55g each), do I follow your method ie submerge the 4 eggs in boiled water for 7-8 minutes?
Thanks Linda, this is one of my favourite too. Good to go with kopi-O and toasted white bread with some kaya. But best of all is to dip the toast in the half boiled egg.
It depends on the size of your saucepan. It will work so long as you have sufficient water to cover all the eggs. Also make sure the eggs are at room temperature. You do need to bring the water to a rolling boil. Then turn off the stove. If you are using an electric stove, take the saucepan off the stove so that the water will not continue to boil and over cook the eggs.

Also, 7 minutes is generally too long. You need to experiment with the number of eggs vs size of vessel vs timing
Thank you for your tips.😄

Thanks Linda, this is one of my favourite too. Good to go with kopi-O and toasted white bread with some kaya. But best of all is to dip the toast in the half boiled egg.
You are welcome. I agree that it is best to dip toast into the half boiled eggs.
How much water is needed if I would like to make 4 eggs? Is this means we must avoid using boiling water to make a perfect half-boiled eggs?
It depends on the size of your saucepan. It will work so long as you have sufficient water to cover all the eggs. Also make sure the eggs are at room temperature. You do need to bring the water to a rolling boil. Then turn off the stove. If you are using an electric stove, take the saucepan off the stove so that the water will not continue to boil and over cook the eggs.
Thanks for reply. I will try it. Thanks again...
Thanks auntie
