Hi Chops, I got my 2020 GT nearly a year ago after watching this review more than I needed and test riding lots of different bikes. The first thing my 3 year old asked me when I got my bike home was “ is lamb chops coming to ride it”? . Now a year later he had named his toy motorbike lamb chops. Thanks for your good work, keep it up mate👍
I bought one of these a month ago on the back of this exact review, funny thing is the lad I bought it off here in Ireland had messaged you to seek a bit more info on it and he explained that you loved the bike and were absolutely genuine in your review, which is totally expected:) Thanks for the good work chops, loving the channel and content!!
I’ve got a 2016 model with 32k miles on it and kept outside. Still looks like new apart from some very minor rust on a couple of bolts. The fit and finish is superb. What a machine. Pulse racing one minute and relaxing the next. A touch heavy on tyres though!
This is a good review, especially the analysis of the ergos and the display. I just bought a 2020 GT and take delivery next month. Coming from a BMW S1000XR, which I really love so I have misgivings about going from an inline four to a V-twin. This review allayed that worry.
I personally love the side view profile of this bike! Especially in this color scheme! The front view may not be as good as the R, however it’s still way better than dozens of other ones out there.
These modern bikes seem have a lot of problem with blurry TFT displays. When the ride starts they seem to be okay. But when the speed is a bit higher the TFT gets very much blurry. Impossible to read. I hope they fix this issue on the TFT :-)
I've got a '17 from new. The '19s engine mapping and suspension software upgrades are available for the earlier models and I've had mine done. The upgrades rectify the only complaints I had with mine. I honestly cannot see a better bike on the market. Sports bike handling with tourer comfort and range. If I change mine it will only be for another GT.
That ‘s great info! So other than the new headlights and tft, software for suspension and engine are the only changes? I’ve seen great deals on 16-17’s, but I do like the 19 up headlights.
I think it's a looker by KTM standards. I'm not usually a fan of the KTM looks. Versatility is definitely a winner for me these days. I need a bike that can commute 100 miles a day, be some fun on the weekend, tour and carry lots. Might have to pop to the dealers and see one in the flesh.

Hi mate, i think the vehicle market is dirty, do to manufacturers overproduction, pressure of new models etc. If you love your bike and you know what you have, don't care to resell. I owned a VFR800 with 38000 km on it, and i sold her bcs of high milage (though than). Now i know people in UK had same bike for commuting 7 years and he rode 300000 km without a single problem on the bike. Today i have an ZZR1400, its stupendous bike, no reason to sell up.
After a lifetime of riding sportsbikes I have decided to go the sport tourer route and had shortlisted the S1000XR, Z1000SX and Tracer 900Gt as my top 3 in that order. I had never even thought of KTM but have to say the 1290GT seems to tick all the boxes for me, love the styling, all the goodies and the luggage system.....its definatly top of my list now of sport tourer to view and test ride

This bike is all things to all riders. You can be steady eddie or Marquez or vice versa and I love my GT. Ditch the H2 and come back to the KTM dark side Chops you know you want to😝
coming off my Kawi Concours, I tested a KTM..wind protection lacking for a GT bike especially for Ontario Canada or other colder climates. Cruising at 100km/h you had to be in 3rd or 4th gear to get the roll on grunt that the Kawi has in 6th gear. KTM mechanic said most buyers swap out the front sprocket to increase the RPM..not sure if that affects the speedo. I was looking for a lighter bike but for the cost to get the weight savings and the aforementioned compromises, I decide to go with a new FJR1300 instead for about C$7000 less out the door.
You are a pain in the bottom sir! I spoke to you on the mt10 video and it's your fault I brought one, unfortunately two weeks ago a car run a red light and hit me at 40 mph and totalled the 10 , I'm on the mend but now I'm looking at these now because of you!!! 🙈😂 Have good day as ever great reviews 👍

@@LambChopRides I recently purchased a Cosmo Moto @t - smart brake light that affixes to your helmet and detects when you are decelerating - braking or engine braking to light up and inform other road users of your presence and that you are slowing down. I did a review on this as well and posted it on my channel. Just loved the fun factor of this bike!! That V-Twin is just awesome!! I could certainly trade up for one of these!!
I'm 6' 3" and decided to go for the 1290 Super Adventure S instead as it's a better fit for me. 160BHP so less power but still the same 140Nm torque, so all good and handles excellently for an adventure bike.
@@jamieweber9534 I had a Fuel exhaust on my previous bike as they are relatively near to where I live and I'm sure I'll be getting one for this bike as well soon
I had the 2016 SDGT for about 3 years now. Around 30,000 km. I love how much torque it has and how much it can carry. I don't like how "rough" it is, especially under 5,000 rpm and *especially* in the first 5 minutes after a cold start. If I'm not careful, it would stall on deacceleration. I also didn't like the pain in the ass on doing the valve adjustment myself, but I think all modern bikes are like that. I'm eyeing the Kawasaki H2SX now (the SE+ version). But I could see myself keeping the KTM since overall it's still a great bike.
If I keep watching this review it’s gonna cost me lol. Loving my 66 plate GT but you know how it is when a new model comes out. Anyway I’ll be test riding one myself soon so I’ll see how it compares to my current GT. good review as always
just picked up a 1290 super adv S. What a monster of an engine. My only issue is its way way too quiet from the factory, the gt sounds better actually, but still too muted for what the engine is.
I have a BMW 1200 GS and added super duke GT. I took the bags off day one, not sure where they are. To me, it's an all-out sport bike, just more comfortable than the R. The GS and GT are a perfect combo. GS for touring and some adventure. The GT for balls to the walls thrills! I call it my "HOLY SHIT" bike. I am 148 pounds so you can imagine how it screams. It's comfortable but after a few hours I am spent. I mean, how long can you stay on a roller coaster!
On 3rd sdr now some more vibey than others ,can stop dash from changing mode by covering sensor in middle of dash ,but affects day light running lights .when in track mode you loose trip meter fuel gauge you cannot rely on below half tank awsome bike though . If in mountains loose quick shifter gets bit confused under load .
As I’ve just turned 60 I’m seriously considering getting rid of my GSA and getting the dark version of one of these, had three GSs but I always loved sports tourers. Still 17 in my head so am I mad or will I miss the comfort? Don’t do that much touring these days but I do think the GT panniers look great. Only 5’9” and 29” inside leg, not a giant like you😆. Great review as always👍
I am the same age and same size. The only time I realize my age is when I look in the mirror. I kept my GS and added one of these. I took the bags off day one, not sure where they are. To me, it's an all-out sport bike, just more comfortable than the R. The GS and GT are a perfect combo. GS for touring and some adventure. The GT for balls to the walls thrills! I call it my "HOLY SHIT" bike. It's comfortable but after a few hours I am spent. I mean, how long can you stay on a roller coaster!
Great vid! One bike to rule them all, eh? Certainly one of the nicest GT bikes out there and sounds like it's stacked full of kit! And a track mode!? Yep, ticks a lot of boxes....
Great vid chops, I'm 6ft 4 and I couldn't get my legs to sit properly beneath the tank, such a shame as I had the SDR and really fancied this bike. Went with the 1290 Adventure S instead and must admit, I bloody love it for my size :) definitely need a slip on, travel pack and comfort seat however!
I test rode this last month and agree with most of your comments chops, brakes good, engine great, keyless worked fine, quick shifter works fine (then again so does my 790 one and you seemed to have problems there iirc), dash is great and had no problems with blurring at speed (i think the person who commented on blurry screens may be mixing up camera wobble/focus with blurry screen?). im only 5ft 7in and it fit me pretty much perfectly, am only just on the balls of my feet both sides (29 inch leg), the one thing that did surprise me was the one you rode was a lout louder and more burbly (is that even a word?) than the one i test rode which i found was woefully quiet and would need to be addressed asap, I don't understand how yours was much better, mic near the end can? I got the impression it was a great all rounder, it scratches, it shifts, it commutes, it tours, its a great all round bike to do everything really well. I found myself riding the gt less of a hooligan than i do on my 790 - maybe due to me being lazy and riding the torque wave, my 790 seems to constantly tease me into spanking it, it even encourages it and enjoys being spanked. The 790 is like a naughty little girl friend that goads you, teases you into doing naughty things to it, on the gt, i found myself much more controlled, much more "missionary" I found it was more of a "wife" dare i say a partner.
Like your vids , fella. BUT I just prefer my bikes with NO electronics. Absolutely no mobile phone nonsense! I like my bike to be a machine I have total control over. It has no sway over me. No ABS, no TC, no anything. Keeps you sharp, I think? Enjoying my VTR1000 Firestorm, and my girlfriends SV650S. No electronics. Bliss :-) Keep bringin' the vids, fella!
got to agree the gt is an awesome bike did 8k on mine in last 12 months 17 model never missed a beat and always left me smiling. when it goes in for its service i will be testing the new one but dont think there is enough difference for me to change it just yet but i do like that tft screen compared to mine.
Great review and its exactly how I feel. Came from a gsxr1000 and this felt perfect as soon as I got on it. I've done 3000 miles including a track day at cadwell, a trip to the nurburgring where I went on the north loop as well as the gp track. Taking my misses to Italy on it this month. I love this bike because it can do anything. I'm 6'3 and my leg does touch the tank but is a small thing and really didn't bother me. See if you can borrow it again for a france trip, I'd love to tag along
I like your honest and straight forward way so much! Thanks for sharing your content! You say you probably wouldn't get a Superduke R since the GT almost got everything the R has (apart from the look), but adds more touring capability. A bit later you tested the R and seemed to be absolutely amazed. Would you still make the same statement about getting the GT instead of the R? Thanks a lot in advance for your response.
Chops your right it’s a awesome bike I just found it put me a little to much on my wrists that’s why I ended up on a XR but it was a very close call great video bud keep em com 👍👍
People said that about my RC8R when it first came out I think bc you see a clear headlight and a clear windscreen it makes it look ugly. The bike looks much better with a smoked windscreen.
Throttle response ok? Very nice review as always Chops.shes a bit off a minger but I like ugly/unusual bikes more character than a pretty bike for me every time👍🏻👏👏👏👏
Yes i must say all the new 2019 bikes Ive ridden so far this year all of them have the throttle sorted now. Seems they have finally worked out how to do it!
Rode it this March and then took for a second round in April. Beautiful bike but here are some cons I found, after owning k1300s for 9 years: quickshifter changes gears waaay too rough. Most of the time it makes noise when changing that makes me think that the quickshifter sooner or later brakes the gearbox. Too clunky. However, downshifting makes it sweeeet. Sometimes when thrashing the bike hell of quickshifter fails to work at all. Mirror are too close to your head so you will have to twist your neck quite often. Engine produces so much heat that can warm up some tiny European country in winter. Changing the power mode or the suspension preload takes a while even if you know exactly where the required settings are. It's too deep in the menu. As you mentioned there is a barely noticeable difference between Sport suspension and Comfort one. I would like to have comfort softer and Sport harder. The seat is too hard for a tourer. Needs to be changed. Just my thoughts. But anyway, my k1300s has to go so I ordered SDGT :D
From the front Looks better than the old shape . is it my imagination but when I sat on the new GT shape (not rode it ). but felt narrower . As a short 28” legged rider easier to get feet on the ground the better .
Having had one for two years, the stock screen is poor even at the highest setting. It isn’t fair to say you could sit at 100mph on the motorway because you can’t you’d be deaf and exhausted. The Puig screen makes things a little better.
I have a 2017 which has done just over 17k miles. I recently had the suspension software upgrade and find the suspension rather clunky? It was a little clunky before the upgrade but this seems to have got worse now. I'm thinking of upgrading to the new model but if suspension is the same i might try the "R" as the suspension on the one I recently rode was very plush
HI Mr Chops, I am in the market for a SD can't decide R or GT. I've had a go on my mates GT fitted like a glove I'm 6' '0" . My heart says R my head says GT. I plan to tour Europe one day so the panniers, 24lt tank USB's and all the other little refinements will come in handy. It will be my only bike, do I go for Claudia Schiffer or Claudia Winkleman 🤔 I'm 59 next month I keep telling myself that my biking days are numbered my present bike is a 2015 no frills blade.
Hi lc just bought one of these of thd back of this review sold my zzr1400 and got one I also have a 1000xr which I thought I'd use for touring etc but after riding the duke I don't know how much I'll be riding the bm cause what bike the gt is Thanks for a great review 👍 😀
good review but the price 24k here in canada to steep for my budget i still prefer my kawasaki gtr 1400 plenty of power and no chain maintenance a big plus for me on long trip the Kawasaki concours name here in canada have shaft drive and the price difference its a big plus gonna keep my kawasaki for sure.
Superduke R and Gt is like comparing apples n pears at least the GT gives super moto like ride with touring or banging miles out of so long as the mechanical n electrics are ok
honest question? I have own 2016 model and loved it but too many problems with it and also the cruise control and some fiddles with the engine. Now that is a R engine on GT , the question is is it better then 2016 model. (currently own a kawasaki H2 SX SE)
Tan Cakar I have the same question. I have the 2017 bike with the full powerparts catalogue thrown at it. Are the changes worth it for 2019? I do like having a conventional rev counter..
tried this and the h2 sx and loved the ktm but the sx felt a bit big and didn't seem to do the bends as good , bought a new mt10 instead not so many extras i know but 5 grand cheaper and more fun as long as you keep filling her up lol if i was doing more trips i would have got the ktm
I'm buying 2020model with 25k on the clock...1 owner full service with loads of extras, question is is 25k alot of miles for this bike, had valve clearances done last year, and service...mot this week...is it worth 9k?.thanks
I test road a 2021 GT recently. To me it felt way better on the front tyre than the older one I rode before it... Did they update geometry or linkage or something? It was a massive difference, way more confidence inspiring the than the 2016 I rode before... If they did update geometry or linkage what year did they do that?
Entertaining review as ever. Seems like a pretty cool & fun way to tour. Although not sure about the front end or is it the colour scheme? The white side panels seem a bit out of place & it's got a hint of GSXS1000F about the front. Presumably looks better in the flesh though.
No center stand on a sport touring bike, especially one that's chain driven, is, to me, Just Wrong. Lubing the chain, fixing a puncture, both require a stand--and a sport touring bike is intended to do multiple long-distance days. I really wanted the SDGT--but I ended up getting the SA-S instead, primarily because it has a center stand. Sadly, there isn't a way to afix one on the SDGT
@@Texarmageddon You're 75 miles from home. You get a nail in your tire. How do you patch it? Or, you're on a 900-mile ride over two days. You notice your chain is loose. How do you adjust your chain? Again, it CAN be done without a center stand, but it makes it so much more difficult (to me, anyway--YMMV).
Test rode this bike and thought it was awesome. However, I decided not trade my 2013 990 SMT for it. My problem with most new bikes, is that we have reached a point where all the improvements over the precedent generation is through the electronics. I won't dismiss the electronics and all the good things they bring to motorcycling... BUT, I work on my own bikes, all maintenance and mods are done by myself in my garage. Electronics are an absolute NIGHTMARE for someone like me. I like to keep my bikes MINT, so going to the dealership each time I want to adjust something would ruin me, let along all the times where i would be disappointed by some botched job. Also, almost every time I had a problem with a bike was because of some electronic trouble, so I like to keep my bikes simple. If you go to the dealership for maintenance, and have the money for it, then newer bikes are awesome. But guys like me will have to keep their older bikes forever from now on I guess...
I have taken the superduke for a test ride and i noticed that the footpegs vibrated quite a lot and I am worried about this happening on the Gt...might not be very confortable on long trips. Is it any bettee on the GT? Thanks a lot and great vid bu the way!
Can you compare this to a Multistrada? I am wondering A LOT! xD... Riding a Hypermotard 1100 EVO atm. Looking to get either a new 950 or a 1290R or GT... A friend got a Multi, but I like this one more on the looks...
What would you consider the best this bike or the s1000xr. I’m ready to purchase early next year and can’t decide really. Had a go of an s1000xr already an 2018 model.

I mean, how long can you stay on a roller coaster!
totally agree, my dads got one and i borrow it whenever possible lol
insanely fast
Good review Chops 👍👍👍.
The new look isn’t an improvement but the versatility....WOW !
Yes its impressive Chris!
Hope you got the GT. I’m 5’7” with the same inseam, even with the powersport seat which makes the setaing even higher, it’s no problem.
I bought this bike after this review, still love it !
Another opinion, for me it's the best looking of all the ktm's and at 6ft fits me like a glove.
Perfect review, exactly the bike is big but you don’t feel like and the seat is not high and comfortable.
Great vid! One bike to rule them all, eh? Certainly one of the nicest GT bikes out there and sounds like it's stacked full of kit! And a track mode!? Yep, ticks a lot of boxes....
Really does Mac.. Would certainly have one if I did the miles
A proper hooligan machine capable of touring. Very informative review as usual. Away to watch your tour now as some how missed it.
Jamie Weber I’m 6’6” and fit on my Tracer way better than the SDGT
Miran Kajtna I wish. Tracer fit my budget more than my size
I feel you im 6 foot 5 inch and my leg dont fit under the fuel tank. I got adventure 1190 s and I LOVE it !
Great review. Mr Chops always delivers quality.👍😎
Really nice. Yes its up there if I only wanted the one bike and budget would allow
On the back of this video and a test ride a few days ago im going to buy one.👍👍
A pair of rear sets might relieve some of the leg clearance issue, but that also might take a little away from the "touring"...
Love your channel bro. Greatings from México.
I used an external recorder for better engine audio Peter thats why. But it still sounds amazing even standard
Nice review, keep it up dude!
Wow sounds like the perfect all rounder! Great vid as always mate 😎👍
Thanks Griz!
got to agree the gt is an awesome bike did 8k on mine in last 12 months 17 model never missed a beat and always left me smiling. when it goes in for its service i will be testing the new one but dont think there is enough difference for me to change it just yet but i do like that tft screen compared to mine.
Great bike, and great review!
How is it for the pillion?
@@peterwilliams1004 she seems happy enough. Done about 130miles 2 up with no problem. Big test will be the next trip.
No the new R is amazing, that would be my next bike now I think 👍
@@LambChopRides Proper punctuation: That would be my next bike now . . . . . . I think.
Chops your right it’s a awesome bike I just found it put me a little to much on my wrists that’s why I ended up on a XR but it was a very close call great video bud keep em com 👍👍
Smart screen/display. Hopefully that'll filter down to the next 790 Duke.
I agree with you about the screen. I don’t love the front, she’s a bid ugly but apart from that it’s a superb do all bike. The TFT is superb.
People said that about my RC8R when it first came out I think bc you see a clear headlight and a clear windscreen it makes it look ugly. The bike looks much better with a smoked windscreen.
Ok stop now...please....I cant keep wanting all of the bikes you review 🤣🤣
Best job on the planet
haha sorry :-)
Throttle response ok? Very nice review as always Chops.shes a bit off a minger but I like ugly/unusual bikes more character than a pretty bike for me every time👍🏻👏👏👏👏
Yes i must say all the new 2019 bikes Ive ridden so far this year all of them have the throttle sorted now. Seems they have finally worked out how to do it!
You have to change the fuel cap to a race cap. It makes the difference.
Thanks Maxim, your right about QS but it's the same for all big twins. The GS boxer engine QS is way more ropey 😀
thats how i feel about my 04 fz1, one bike to do it all
Just sold my Yamaha FJ-09 so I will be picking one up next summer definitely maybe this summer who knows 🤔
I just don’t know if I could trust a KTM to do my 10,000 miles a year. Great review as ever Chops
I have a multi 1260 pikes peak and had it two years, great bike. You have ridden both is it as good do you think for back Road fun and occasional tour
Interesting....... So the big question- speed triple RS or Superduke GT?..... Never been bothered about wind blast but knee bend....
Interesting what you say about the fit, I'm 6ft2 and fit great on mine, or have they changed the fairing slightly?
Yeah not sure on that one... Defo tight for me and others have mentioned the same thing..
Hi lc just bought one of these of thd back of this review sold my zzr1400 and got one I also have a 1000xr which I thought I'd use for touring etc but after riding the duke I don't know how much I'll be riding the bm cause what bike the gt is
Thanks for a great review 👍 😀
lovely bike, great 2019 used prices, looking to upgrade from a VFR, 5`11...must get out on one...hope you can put TFT in dark mode all the time?
good review but the price 24k here in canada to steep for my budget i still prefer my kawasaki gtr 1400 plenty of power and no chain maintenance a big plus for me on long trip the Kawasaki concours name here in canada have shaft drive and the price difference its a big plus gonna keep my kawasaki for sure.
I thought it was much better Tan... Whole bike seemed more composed and much more like the R model
tried this and the h2 sx and loved the ktm but the sx felt a bit big and didn't seem to do the bends as good , bought a new mt10 instead not so many extras i know but 5 grand cheaper and more fun as long as you keep filling her up lol if i was doing more trips i would have got the ktm
They should have retained the previous headlight design only make them full led. This one is hideous. On the flip side, that dash is world class!
My 2015 SDR has brembo discs. Maybe it was an add on by the previous owner?
Never used a stand for any of these...
I would use a stand for actually changing a tire or fixing a broken chain though
Wonder how the new H2 SX SE Plus compares....
Brilliant chop very powerful bike 💪 I'll stick with my MT 10 though .thanks Danny
I have taken the superduke for a test ride and i noticed that the footpegs vibrated quite a lot and I am worried about this happening on the Gt...might not be very confortable on long trips. Is it any bettee on the GT? Thanks a lot and great vid bu the way!
no doubt rides well but a redesign of those white tank panels could make it less fugly
Any sign of riding the beast gen 3 chops be interesting to eat your thoughts
Can you compare this to a Multistrada? I am wondering A LOT! xD... Riding a Hypermotard 1100 EVO atm. Looking to get either a new 950 or a 1290R or GT... A friend got a Multi, but I like this one more on the looks...
How do you like this vs the multistrada? Especially the pikes peak you reviewed? Thanks!
What would you consider the best this bike or the s1000xr. I’m ready to purchase early next year and can’t decide really. Had a go of an s1000xr already an 2018 model.
Personally I would take the GT, it's way more exciting than the XR 👍
