Because of anachronistic 'cantabile' trumpet parts? :) Also, that was Isaac Dunayevsky who encouraged Goldstein to write a hoax symphony 'in the Viennese school style'. It's easy, he said. The Soviet government was at the time in search of national spirit. Dunayevsky played a theme at 13:55. He said, 'whether it's a national Ukrainian theme or not, you'll know later'. Goldstein changed the last note of the theme. It turned out to be 'Ой, цветёт калина' (Oh, a viburnum blooms) by Dunayevsky himself. He included it into the music of one Soviet movie. The song is still very popular today in Russia.
dear Jk, going through my old LP-collection I found this Westminster recording of this work. I was told by Yurij Aranowitsch, who was here in Stockholm as chief conductor that the whole symphony is a complete fake. It is a construction by several Russian conductors, who obviously had fun. It may be true in consideration that it is impossible to find any information what so ever on this composer. Bo Hyttner
