    As much as I love Mercedes, I find the three tier menu very confusing for people who are less technology savvy. When the centre section is selected and active, the menus disappear until the controller is pushed up or downwards. I think BMW's iDrive system is much more intuitive, you go through a tree structure like an iPod instead of having three tiers of menus displayed at all times. Also, the animations are much more slicker on BMWs. I haven't used Audi's MMI system, but out of all that I've used, BMW's iDrive is the most nicely presented car infotainment system I've used.

      +TimothyLawTV If you're not tech savvy, don't buy a Mercedes-Benz, simple as that, buy an audi or bmw.

    • @TimothyLawTV
      @TimothyLawTV 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +Tidgy That's a pretty bold statement, considering most of Mercedes' customers are of older age compared to BMW and Audi.

    • @-Tidgy
      @-Tidgy 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      TimothyLawTV Yes because the monkeys, chavs and peasants who buy audis and bmws can only cope with basic tech.
      Interested, what country are you from, just want to know.

      +Tidgy I never said iDrive and MMI were basic, they just have a better UI for beginners.

    I really appreciate German cars, esp. Mercs, as my family always have more than 3 at the same time. But I really find the Infotainment system of Mercs are not good even when compared to another German manufacture, the BMW. The Merc one just seems too old and outdated from its style and controls. My opinion is that BMW makes the best non-touch screen Infotainment systems, and Japanese luxury brands make the best touch screen ones. (Love the double touch screen on my infiniti Q50)

    wow, so in order to change to the next song on your Bluetooth or radio station, you have to scroll through all those layers of menu? Say if you are in navigation, you have to exit the navigation screen to the media screen just to change a song? No next button on the steering wheel? And this is progress??

  • @realderek
    @realderek 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    One interesting note for music control: if you slowly glide your finger across the trackpad it scrubs through the current song. I haven't seen too many infotainment systems with that feature. It's great for not having to pull out your phone every time you want to skip part of a song, or listen to a section again!

    I love my c300, but the Command System is cumbersome and unintuitive. For example, I never figured out how to switch from XM to FM or AM on the fly while driving. A lot of features are buried down several menus and things have proprietary names that are not cross-referenced with their generic names. The touchpad is wasted space and has never worked properly (dealer readily admits this), so it is just in the way. A real touchscreen would be much easier to use. I've never used the navigation since Siri is much easier to program and suggests alternatives when traffic is heavy. At least the climate control can be accessed easily via the manual buttons on the dash. Also, not related to this video so much, but I wish the agility mode could be changed and not always default back to Comfort, which I never use.

    As always, great review from Alex...
    Now onto my gripe. As I watch this video, I'm coming to terms that every manufacturer is making their own interface, BMW with theirs, Mercedes-Benz with theirs, Audi with theirs, Lexus with theirs, and the list goes on.
    Why do we have to have a remote control to play with the screen and learn it again for every manufacturer and even every generation of car? If I owned a last generation C-class, I would have to re-learn this new interface.
    Why can't we just use touch screens? I can take a iPhone, Android, or Windows Phone (all tablets and phone versions) and navigate easily with touch of my finger(s). It's so intuitive to touch a screen through menus to get to where you want to go. The new C-Class, although it looks nice, requires me to re-learn everything I've learned from driving my 2nd gen Lexus IS350. On my 2nd gen IS, navigating on the screen is a breeze, even though there is a little delay. I applaud Cadillac to sticking with a touch-screen on their models, even though I'm told that it's not as responsive as it should be. But if luxury OEMs spent a little more money on hardware and software, I'm sure they can make touch interfaces that are as snappy and fast as an current gen iPad Air.
    So please, let's standardize this screen interface. We've done it with the steering wheel, with the accelerator and brake pedals, along with the standard H pattern on manual cars. We can do the same for screen interface, leaving it to the touch on the screen instead of some new joystick, mouse, pad, wheel or whatever.
    End of rant.

    ☝️ I presently own a 2014 C250 (W204) and I find its Multimedia/Command/Infotainment System very complex and unintuitive. Even its operations manual is a half an inch thick. It took me some time to learn to operate it and I still have not even mastered it yet or learned all of its features and functions. So when I decided to buy my new 2018 C300, (W205) I decided not to order the Multimedia/Command System, but I ordered the available Apple Carplay instead. The Apple Carplay is a much easier and intuitive system to operate and when plugged in, my Apple iPhone interface is easily integrated and displayed in the car’s LCD display monitor. Without the Multimedia/Command System, the touchpad is not available, but the dial knob is. So when my iPhone is plugged in, I can use the dial knob to activate the Apple Music app to play my music collection through the car’s Burmeister sound system and the Sygic or Waze GPS Navigation/Traffic apps, all vividly displayed on the LCD monitor. I can also use my iPhone to make calls via Bluetooth by using either the Carplay, or Voice Command. The Apple Carplay is so much easier to use. By omitting the Multimedia/Command/Infotainment System, I have saved $2,600. The software of the maps and guidance updates for the Mercedes-Benz Command GPS Navigation is dealer installed and costs $300 for the C250, whereas the updates for Sygic and Waze are free. 👍👍👍.

    I found this video, while informative, too fast paced. Would be more comprehensive if displayed on a split screen displaying also what happens on the touch controls. While I have been made aware of all the features the system can provide, I am more confused than before I started watching this video and have not much of an idea of how to get to these features.

    • @AAutoBuyersGuide

      I would say better. The big difference is the lack of distortion at high volumes.

    • @solomonshv
      @solomonshv 9 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Bose is shit. always was shit always will be shit. it belongs in Nissans and toyotas, not luxury lines. the Bose system in the G37/Q50, etc is the same system they put into the Maxima/Murano. The Murano's system is actually better because it has a much more powerful amp.
      Burmester, Harman or Bang & Olufsen is what you want in a proper luxury car. I use to have a G37x with the Bose system. the Sony system in my dad's Ford sounds better than my Bose system. Much less distortion, cleaner highs, and no overpowering bass. currently have a 2013 C300 with the Harman system and it just shits on anything else i've ever used. going to get myself a 2015 C300 in 2 months with the Burmester system. can't wait.

      Alba_Phenom old post but we usually never get the lower engines. The C250 was kinda weird for us honestly with barley over 200hp. There was also kinda a fit with us customers when the W213 came out with only the E300 at first. We found it too slow. (The previous base model was the E350 with 302hp. )

    The command system is just awful - counterintuitive and SO slow. No need for the touch pad either - it just gets in the way and adds unnecessary complexity - who the hell wants to draw alphanumeric characters with their fingers whilst driving?! Mercedes really messed this aspect of the cars up. (2016 C250 Coupe owner).

    • @spreadeagled5654
      @spreadeagled5654 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      zekezero12345 - I agree. I currently own a 2014 C250 and I like the Command System in that car. I just bought a new 2018 C300 and I have to “unlearn” the C250’s system in order to learn the new ways of this Command System. And it has a steeper learning curve.

    • @BeesonsCars
      @BeesonsCars 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      mainlymusicman LOL what? You literally click nav, destination, and enter it manually or check through POI’s. My S classes’ nav system was so much easier to use than my family’s Lexus GS it’s hilarious. The GS had the 12.3inch display but the graphics were worse than my 2007 S550 on the map. Literally the same map screen as my friends 2013 Camry SE.

    • @mainlymusicman
      @mainlymusicman 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@BeesonsCars
      are you kidding? just look at the video... at 7:25. it takes almost 40 seconds before the destination is accepted and ready to go.
      what it SHOULD be is :
      1. press voice button.
      2. "navigate to ... " "
      DONE.
      5 seconds.
      and first of all you left out pull over and stop. as it wont let you do shit when you're driving. first mega fail. (ive just retrofitted my M5 to NBT EBO idrive system which disables this.)
      and in an s class it should be easier. nav systems in cars should be totally hands free like google. and the voice activated nav in my cls is garbage. apparently they finally got it sorted out in the 2019 models. after like 10 years.
