  • For two days in September, steam returned to a picturesque Cornish branch line.
On Sundays 19th and 26th, pannier tank 9466 top-&-tailed with class 37 37685 to perform four round trips on the Liskeard to Looe branch under the name The Looe Valley Explorer.
This video, covering the second of the two days, begins with the locos and stock crossing the Tamar as they travel down to Liskeard from their base at Plymouth's Laira depot, and ends with 9466 storming Hemerdon Bank as it moves from Laira to the South Devon Railway the following day.

Top job, I rode on the last trip of the last Sunday, the mainline trip back to Plymouth was excellent, my 87 year old mum was taken back to her younger days and loved it, thank you for sharing your excellent film,

Superb footage as always Martyn, 9466 was certainly shifting at times, and I was photographing 37685 as 37234 at Maerdy in South Wales back in January 1980....Bob

Great - thanks for posting. Quite complicated trying to work out what should be at the front, as there is a reversal at Liskeard and another at Moorswater I believe, unless it's all changed since I was there?

Wow as soon as you put an 'older' train on it, it really looks like a preservation railway rather than being part of the main rail network!

Blimey the tank engine was getting along a bit occasionally wasn't it ?
Nice to see some lovely film from a pretty line that doesn't get a lot of steam. It would be nice to have steam top and tailed. Maybe another year..........
