Saigon's famous Bún Cha (Better Than Hanoi?) 🇻🇳

- SAIGON, VIETNAM - Bún chả, a Vietnamese street food loved by Vietnamese people, Barack Obama, Anthony Bourdain and now, by me. I'm in District 2 Saigon (Thao Dien) to eat my first Bún Chả Hà Nội . Bun Cha, juicy gilled pork patties, silky soft rice noodles, delicious broth and a mountain of fresh herbs, what is not to like about this popular food in Vietnam? Ho Chi Minh City is famous for it's food and this one is right up there with the best and as I said, if it is good enough for President Obama, it is good enough for me. Of course you can eat Bún chả hà nội all over Saigon, but this location in Saigon D2 is as good as I ate elsewhere.

🙌🏼😃 Very sweet and friendly people! Love the abundance of herbs!
The herbs really do make the food in Vietnam. Yeah so friendly, I love it when you find places like that
Gotta love how super friendly the people are. I wonder if their family is from Hanoi since that's a northern dish. I think you did a good job of demonstrating how to eat it two ways...but the 2nd way is that you toss the noodles into the broth/sauce and let it soak along with the herbs and veggies. Then you dig 'em all out and eat them in one perfect bite. Regarding fish sauce, "nuoc mam" means straight u fish sauce and "nuoc mam cham" means fish dipping sauce...but many Viets will just call the dipping sauce "nuoc mam" or "nuoc cham" for short - it's all about context of the conversation. You should try this dish in Hanoi and see what you think.
so friendly. everywhere I went in Saigon, people were absolutely lovely. This place was so so good. I am really happy I found it to eat there
Enjoy the food. Love Vietnamese and Thai food.
me too! love them both
I’ve never had Bun Cha. Sad, I know. BUT I’ll be in Saigon next week, so I’m very excited to try this dish! Took a screenshot of the address, will definitely hit up this place.
Oh yeah!! You’ll love it. All the videos have google map links in the description so be sure to grab them. There’s a cookie shop right around the corner which is amazing too, in another video. You should try them as well and be sure to say hi from me :)
Oh I certainly will stop by there. I cannot say no to cookies! 🐷🍪🤤
@@pinkladie801 let me know what you think :)
Everything Dac Biet works for me. When in doubt, ask for the special! Nice to see you using the condiments. Pickled garlic, chilli and fish sauce flavour combined with grilled pork is too good to resist. Before long, you will understand the flavour profiles and textural elements in Vietnamese cuisine. I am so glad you are enjoying all the food X
I agree, always ask for the special, whatever it is.
@@hungrytoexploreEven works with massages 😂
Hello from upstate New York, originally from south of Saigon in the Mekong Delta. LOVE, LOVE your vlogs!!! You should be a host for a food network or maybe you already are or a restauranteur? You describe the food of what you are eating so amazingly well, make me hurry every time watching you! one silly comment, when you squeeze the lime you should spread the juice all over the bowl instead of one area....Happy eating & enjoy discovering the unknown!
Hello! I am really happy to hear that you enjoy the vlogs. Haha, no I am not a restauranteur or chef. Just love food and eating. Sure - Don't worry, I always stir to mix the lime in before eating.
So great my friend
thank you :)
Chào bạn❤tôi là người vn cách ăn bún chả của người viêt cho toàn bộ gia vị mà mình thích như chanh ớt tỏi....sau đó cho bún cúng rau sống vào và thưởng thức nó
Yeah it’s so delicious ! One of my favourites
10:25 I don't usually eat like that, I usually put the Bún into that soup and enjoy it with some vegetable and Chả, Thịt nướng... I think u eat like children ( I'm not sure, bc children are too small to eat that big bowl so their parents have to take a small bowl and put the dish in ) but that's ok 🇻🇳😊😊
Haha I watched how people in the restaurant were eating and tried those ways. 😂
You are way more daring then I was when I was eating in Vietnam……the food always looked so good but I was afraid to try too much!
I take the mantra “what won’t kill, will only fatten” and get stuck on haha
This Hanoi bun cha dish when eaten should add a little fresh garlic or garlic vinegar, sliced fresh chili will be even more delicious.❤
He did add some garlic in vinegar, plus the chilli.
That’s right :) I did that haha
Sick video mate
Cheers man! Bun cha was ridiculously good
One of my favourites. But I am concerned about my waist size due to too much pork fat. Thank you so much for another video, Joe. ❤❤
hahaha I have come to terms with the fact that good food makes you fatter haha. Just need to burn it off with the exercise later
You should put all the Bún in the soup and leave it in more time so that it tastes better
That’s a great idea too
Thanks for sharing 😋😋😋
my pleasure
~ Hello. Thank you. Joe parrilla.👍
~ Great. Video. I.lo ve you.
😘😘VIET NAM.👍❤💜❤💜💑👪👫
thank you
Nhìn thèm quá các bạn của tui ơi.
Haha yes! I’m always hungry when there’s good food
That green vegetable is papaya pickle
ahhh that is great!
you are right, I think I prefer the dipping method.
Wow, it look so delicious . I want to try once but unfortunately I’m now in Switzerland.
You’ll have to plan a trip haha
There are sliced carrot and raw papaya in the fish sauce.
awesome! but why are people calling it fish sauce... it is definitely a broth with a base of fish sauce rather than simply, fish sauce...
@@hungrytoexplore The thing is, it is made of fish sauce called Nuoc Mam. If it was a dipping sauce, it is called Nuoc Cham but it's still made from fish sauce. This is made from fish sauce but a bit more diluted and heated up, it's not really a broth or soup. I am happy to help you if you need explanation. Like most things in Vietnam, you can just wrap your grilled meats into the lettuce and herbs and dip it into the fish sauce! Adjust to your taste using the condiments on the table :)
You are absolutely right Joe. I think you know better than me. Yes, it is well diluted fish sauce to almost a broth. The original fish sauce is very salty and unappealing but the fish sauce is already customised into Nuoc Cham or Nuoc Mam that tastes much better. I have learnt a lot by watching your videos. Well done.
@@ericamary6778 for me this is still a broth. It’s like using a stock cube to make a broth (which is common) and then saying I’m eating a stock cube. The fact it’s also got many other Ingredients to- for me, it’s definitely a broth haha

just doing my mental math so when i travel Vietnam again if it’s worth it to solo travel or share the food and bill with this amount. I dont eat a lot in 1 sitting. that means i need a travel buddy 😅
it is always good to have a travel buddy, but remember that bill covered a large "special portion" a drink and a nem ran as well as all the side of the bun cha. I think it was worth it
i know right away you gonna regret that whole little chilly =))) Always test the chillies in Vietnam with small bites
hahaha they sure have a good kick to them
Next video you can claim that if it's good enough for Joe Parrilla then it's good enough for Obama. Pity that I don't eat fatty pork but still enjoy watching your video.
Haha that’s right! Not sure he would take my recommendation though. There’s always time to try something new. What’s the saying? Never try, never know 5555.
❤❤❤❤❤
🇻🇳❤
After awhile you dont even bother with the second bowl, but ive never had bun cha, I just assumed lol
hahaha probably true

Hahaha thank you
Món bún chả nhé anh bạn😂
Did google translate get it wrong? It is meant to say Vietnamese Noodle Dish
@@hungrytoexplore No. No.
>> Bun. Cha * Bun Nem.👍
Bun cha is a different dish from Pho
Yeah, that was google translate... whoops
oh man... that's not broth... it's fish sauce!
hahah it is definitely broth, no way I could eat fish sauce like that - I know the broth has a base of fish sauce... but it is not only fish sauce haha
@@hungrytoexplore Really? I never knew... I am Vietnamese but I left VN when I was 12... I gotta ask my older sibblings about this!!
@@tennisdi haha let me know. Fish sauce, rice wine vinegar, lime juice, sugar, garlic and chill and then diluted with water to make it into a broth. I understand why people say it is fish sauce. But for me, it is like added stock cube to water to make a soup... you wouldn't say you are eating a stock cube, you say you are eating a broth haha.
@@hungrytoexplore ok... I got you now... it's still called "nuoc mam chua" which means a diluted fish sauce w/ all the ingredients you mentioned. We used this diluted fish sauce for many dishes... Straight fish sauce is mostly used for cooking. That said, we don't call this diluted fish sauce "broth".. it's still a fish sauce in which we don't eat it straight like Pho broth for instance... But hey, if you like to eat it straight like that, nothing's wrong with that :) it just means you really love it LOL..
@@tennisdi haha that’s right! I love it , it was one of my fav dishes
Nước lèo mà đựng trong cái thùng nhựa trung quốc là thấy không xong rồi
😅
Chào mừng bạn đến việt nam.
Cách ăn bún chả của bạn chưa đúng, bạn có thể tìm hiểu thêm nhé.
I ate it three different ways! One must be right jaja.
@@hungrytoexplore😂 correct
This is bun cha, not pho
yeah, blame google translate
Hi Mr..
Are you very handsome 😍
Are you the best in the world 🌎, Are you the one eating to much food..
A bit like you and vantida I guess 🤣 Although That’s not so secret
Haha I am handsome!
@@hungrytoexplore Your Vietnamese fans have a way of wording things! All positive comments too which is nice.
xin chào
hello hello
I physically cringe every time you call the fish sauce “broth”. Yes, it’s diluted and mixed with other ingredients, but we still call it a variation of fish sauce so you should too lol
Hahaha sorry! To me it’s a broth by my definition- appreciate its not for you though. I think of it in the sense a broth made from a stock cube is still a broth… I don’t say let me try the stock cube
