    Well, I started a similar project on a JD 48" deck but was having problems blowing through the metal. Thanks for the help and advice. I will be trying again this spring. I had gotten another deck from a mower with a blown engine and so I haven't needed it, but I wanted to fix it up nevertheless.

    • @EliminatorPerformance
      @EliminatorPerformance  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You could always use pieces from one bad deck to make 1 good one if they're not rotted in the same spot. This one over all wasn't as bad as some that I've seen, but it was worse than I originally thought once I started the job. The top spots had to be taken care of. Thanks for watching!

    Nice to have the tools eh buddy! Some very nice vertical welds you did there, not bad for being out of the welding business for 14 years buddy i think your customer will be extremely happy with not only the finished product but the invoice. It should be good for many years if they only cut grass when it is dry and maybe in two years you get it back to review and do a little more work on some of the thin areas. See yall next week.

    Mower decks are the worst. Blowing thru because the corrosion is all over the place. I am working on a scag deck. Totally abused. Cut the whole front nose off. Cnc plasma cut a new nose and used slices in the program to make the bends. Still was a pain and took a lot of time. Good job for what this junk is.

    A great piece to add to your toolbox would be a 1/8 or 1/4" thick plate of copper. You can clamp it to the back side of the patch and it helps dissipate heat, and none of your welding will stick to it.

  • @REVNUMANEWBERN
    @REVNUMANEWBERN 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    You're the expert but in that area 3:33 where you hand is I think I would of taken some paper & made a pattern for that complete sunken area completely across the deck then welded it in, & done the same for the front

    • @waynestefinashen239
      @waynestefinashen239 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That would have been a better longer lasting repair but the customer requested repairs in areas that had holes only and would be giving us the rider and deck back in two or three years for a full service and more deck repair welding if needed.

    • @waynestefinashen239
      @waynestefinashen239 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@norge696 You also need to add in material costs like MIG wire, welding gas, 1/8" steel plate, grinding wheels, primer and orange paint, Krown undercoating, 3 blade sharpen and balance, time for wire wheel cleaning under the deck. • @EliminatorPerformance
      @EliminatorPerformance  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well with the filming it was probably 12hrs because I did about 3 days working for 4hrs each but when I'm doing videos that use the tripod and multiple camera angles, plus music it takes me significantly longer because I don't have a cameraman, it's me setting everything up, pressing record and then getting to work, then repositioning everything. This job by itself was charged at 4hrs plus materials. Cost the customer about $400 which extends the life of the mower a few more years at least.

  • @thebeardedstork432
    @thebeardedstork432 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    That is awesome! What type of welding were you doing in your previous life? This is very similar to welding patches in an old car body. No way you can run a continuous bead. It has to be stitch welded. Have you found any orange paint that is a close match for Ariens orange? I wondered if a paint store could tint a white base of Tremclad to match? I know you can buy actual Ariens paint, but it is very, very expensive. It is similar to this orange on your deck. If not, i guess i could use what you used here.

    • @EliminatorPerformance
      @EliminatorPerformance  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I used to do SMAW and also Mig welding structures that were used as pump houses in the oil and gas industry. Then went on to weld at a Drop Forge plant doing maintenance and also fabrication for basically anything they could think of, I could build it. Also, BeautiTone sells an Alkyd Kubota orange paint at Home Hardware here in Canada, but they were out of stock so we got this. And yes, similar to body work on a car, always tacking, low amps and trying to move around the metal to keep prevent hot spots. Thanks for watching!

  • @REVNUMANEWBERN
    @REVNUMANEWBERN 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm nosey, did you charge by the HR for that job?? I think creating a patter for a larger longer area, then cut that in metal, then weld would of not been so time consuming and a stiffer outcome

    • @waynestefinashen239
      @waynestefinashen239 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Customer actually got charged roughly 1/3 of the actual hours spent on welding. #1 a great loyal customer #2 many referral customers from this customer #3 actually was my sons technical teacher in high school. At Eliminator Performance we charge by the hour but also give our regular customers and sometime initial customers a discount on both labour and parts that is why the business has grown to what it is today from 10 years ago. Offering 1 to 2 day returns also helps!

      Have you priced a new mower and deck lately? Why not fix older equipment that was built better than the recent Chinesium crap. I keep my older equipment running because its built much better and had more than a 5 year planned usable life. But, if you want more debt and landfill crap go ahead and buy a new one :)

    • @EliminatorPerformance

      To replace this liquid cooled riding tractor would be a great expense and this repair with possibly a few more every 2nd or 3rd year keeps this fine piece of equipment running for many more years to come. If the owner only cuts when the grass is dry they may not ever need another repair job on this deck, cut when dry and keep the top clean of debris and stored out of the weather.

    • @waynestefinashen239
      @waynestefinashen239 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@beanolatte2682 Jake spent a lot of time welding this deck but because this is a regular customer only charged out a 3 hour labour rate. Likely without counting the time of moving the camera and video time the likely spent a full 8 hours which included cleaning, cutting the deck and plate steel, grinding to fit and welding plus the final prime and paint.

      Right on Patrick but the cost of an aluminium deck would have drastically increased the original selling price of this riding tractor and deck. Cutting grass in dry weather conditions only and this deck would still look like new, or at least cleaning the underside after cutting wet grass.
