I get that these bikes are not as fast as the top fuel dragsters, but they *look* faster. Maybe it's because they're smaller. With these bikes, taking off from the start line, it really is a case of "blink and you'll miss it". Massive respect to anyone who gets on one of these monsters.
They moved the engine behind the driver for safety creating the rail car. Funny cars are inherently more dangerous because the motor is in front of you, but laying on top of a nitro motor in my opinion is one of the most insane things that man has come up with, and these guys do it on a regular basis, NUCKIN FUTS!!!
I can attest, in my Go Kart days, running fuel, I bench tested my engine with my Nitro mix, got running and it started to over rev, had 2 carbs I closed off the intakes, it kept on over reving with intakes closed off, I then pulled the fuel lines, luckily it did not come apart or cause damage, but in the races I burned holes in 2 pistons.
I had a top alcohol dragster and I was at a national dragster event in Kearny Nebraska and back in 2003 that track had like grass growing up thru cracks it was the sketchiest strip I've ever raced. So anyways after several passes albeit extremely bumpy and made my back hurt, I was still consistent and fast, until the semi final.... Went down the track and right as I passed about the 1000ft I hit a bump and my air intake bounced and touched my right rear wheel and the wheel ripped it off and threw it under the engine wrapping my fuel line around the block... O__O then it backfired and WHOOOOOF big pop and lots of fire. Wasn't scary like this but man when you've got a motor making that much pressure that close to you when it goes off? Yeah you remember that shit lol.
That was one thing that Don pruhdome done at tracks they were at, set out back behind trailer, they set the front wheel down just before finish line, it's crazy at the 1/4 mile mark
When blasting companies need a slightly more sensitive blasting composition than ammonium nitrate/fuel oil (diesel) They mix the ammonium nitrate prills with nitromethane. Bit easier to set off than ANFO... little more detonation velocity. Ain't chemistry fun kids?
With more power comes more torque which in turn reduces handling. As you roll on the throttle and release the clutch, that torque which launches the bike also raises that front tire (countered by the wheelie bar) ever so slightly. That rise is a loss of front handling. Your basically wheeling down the track at 8.5ft/.10sec
I'm gonna pause this video right now at 6:08 and say, YES ABSOLUTELY Larry McBride's beautiful Star makes profound unfathomable horsepower. BUT, in line 4's produce very smooth power in my opinion, compared to the 45° vtwin single crank pin with a firing order that makes you scratch your head. Plus, the low end torque (60ft-120ft) I'm guessing is much more violent than Spiderman's bike. Has he ever rode aT/F Harley? If not, then he can't really answer that question. Honestly, both scare me a little. But man I sure would LOVE to learn!!

NITROglycerin, triNITROtoulene (TNT), NITROus Oxide, yea, Nitro is some hardcore stuff... 🤯 Anything that carries enough oxygen AND the fuel source with it, to support a huge explosion, is some volatile stuff... and MUST be treated with the utmost respect. And accidents STILL are inevitable, even when given the respect is deserves.
Ohh noo. It is a danderous mix. Use to use gas-ahol in my uncle's race car in the day. In the 80's to 90's. Dirt track late model. Did not win by the way was young, run average 4 to 6th. Once second in that Camaro ASA chassie.
Nitromethane is unstable. The Germans first used it, before WW2, in a skinny fabric tire Formula 1 car of the day. It was created to be a strong cleaning solvent, which it is as well. It took the Germans OVER WD40 attempts. Created by accident in the end, kinda like Champagne. Its a party in the fuel tank, but it's gotta be timed right or it sprays expensive parts all over everyone. No unscheduled hot copper cladding embedded in my thigh, thank you much.
Nicely produced video on a super interesting topic. Nice to have an entertaining long form video. Keep up the good work and do some more longer videos!
Petrol and especially diesel don't really _want_ to go "bang!" - they take a lot of encouragement and forcing just the right conditions before they'll comply. Nitro _REALLY WANTS_ to go bang and doesn't take much excuse for it to go "I thank you kindly, sir ... aaand BANG!" 😂 There's a few more volatile compounds out there, but those aren't even close to being suitable as a fuel source. Nitro is about as dangerous as you wanna ever get. At least in something that doesn't have a literal rocket bolted to it LOL
00:13 The National Institutes of Health recommends the following to reduce the frequency of SFS (Sudden Flatulence Syndrome ) 1. eat smaller meals, more often. 2. drink or chew food slowly, with your mouth closed. 3. exercise regularly to improve how your body digests food. 4. drink peppermint tea. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Nitro Methane plus oil = nitro glycerine. You start on alcohol switch to Nitro, at the end, you switch back to alcohol before shutting down. If the engine fails to start, you empty the oil before restarting.

Stop laughing! but that was one of the most entertaining days of my life.
It would stop the bike if the bike was reducing velocity (cut of power). The sand trap would bring the bike to a stop through drag (given enough acceleration bleed off). The bike that crashed was still under power
Nitro wants to kill you pretty much at ALL times. Its like a bucking bull that is constantly trying to flip you off it's back 100% of the time that you're on it.
The track owner needs to be charged and fined for the "sand trap" being packed so hard. No sense in having one of the bikes are just going to roll over the top of it like asphalt. Sand needs to be dug up loose so they work properly.
