Not only that, the man can't even light a cigar properly.
I've noticed when characters make power moves they smoke a cigar. Tony does it, Phil and his crew do it at the end when declining an offer with Tony. I need to rewatch to catch any others. Could be looking into it too much or confirmation bias.

Despite his mangling of the English language...Carmine was actually pretty self aware and made good decisions in mafia matters. He was right to back down in the internal war with Johnny Sack. He kind of knew he wasn't really respected by some people and was seen as a spoiled idiot son of the boss.
He was smart to stay mostly away in Miami and just be a captain and fly under the radar and make his money. He probably had a lot of money from his dad anyway. He also had a hot wife who seemed to love him. He definitely seemed to have a better life than Tony.
Well it’s hard to verify that carmine Lupertazzi jr would be an effective leader . But he always admired his dad . But up until that time it’s going to be hard to verify he’ll be an effective leader
I keep coming back to this point. I don't know if I'm convinced by the conspiracy theories that Carmine was the master puppeteer towards the end of the show and plans everything out only to swoop in and steal it all, but you have to look at the facts and acknowledge he avoided a lot of bullshit. He also wasn't afraid to be snakey in pitting people against one another (see his dad and Johnny Sac), a trait that Tony couldn't see in John. Looking at it through this lens, it does feel like that slip about Phil's brother in the sit-down could be intentional.
But by intention or luck, you're right - Carmine seemed to have it better than Tony.
He got lucky over and over. Then just decided to step aside

He also stirred the pot when it seemed that Tony and Phil were about to reconcile

I love this character... he wants to be smarter & more intellectual than actually is, constant malapropisms, but he actually has the temperament for the job of leader, unlike almost every other character in the show.
He's actually a legitimately smart cookie. He's one of those dudes who learns words only by reading them.
The show has many nods to Sun Teh-zu, and I'm shocked at how many missed the fact that Little Carmine (and Albert Barese) embodied the "If you're strong, present yourself as weak." principle.
Tony was such a bad boss, temperamental, paranoid and with a big mouth threatening and bullying everybody. Whacking everybody because of his paranoia. I'm surprised he lasted that long as boss

Phil House kept that show together. It was always incredible to tune in every week to HBO to see, season after season, how the many hijinks and disputes of the main characters could be resolved through the kind words, wisdom, and guidance of Phil House. Every week the characters would visit Phil House in Brooklyn to learn a new lesson in love, kindness, and loyalty, and this compilation shows the positive benefits of Phil House's lessons in rhetoric, which he taught to Carmine Jr. so that he could go on to resolve arguments through love, excellent diction, and a knack for storytelling (without everybody having to drive to Brooklyn to see Phil House). Some people say they wish the writers had done more with Phil House, but considering he was integral to argument resolution and peacekeeping in almost every episode of The Sopranos, I would say they did enough with him. What a great show.
