  • Tbh i think the song is kinda good, but I'm going to acknowledge the elephant in the room especially if I just found out about it. But I'm sure you will probably ave the same sentiment as we did in the last video on this topic.

As a OG CL fan and a black woman I don't see appropriation. Out of a lot of kpop artists she actually knows about hip hop, the culture and the history. She has nothing but respect for it. I know I sound like a whiny fan but hey it is what it is. But great reaction.

Remember when CL is the first one to stand up for Black Lives Matter and say how KPOP deep rooted from black culture, she’s that queen 👸

Throughout her life CL has been very close to the Afro-descendant and Latino communities, she lived in many places and in some of them groups of them lived, that is why it is easy for her to make a connection with them and that is why it is not seen as a mockery, why She has lived and developed at some point in her life with them and has always been very respectful. 😅😊❤

Cl gives credit (especially to black artists like she made sure to say her group and K-pop in general are based on black culture) and hardly over steps. I don’t see this really as appropriation but I can see how ppl feel some type of a way it does give black cosplay in a way (like Lisa) especially when a lot of idols haven’t grown up in this environment at all very protected
Yg and that weirdo really stopped her career from blooming in the west
Please watch more of her stuff

This song is still on repeat, I'm still not getting any "appropriation" from it. None of that is really culture. guns, beer bottles? I just don't get it. It's not like she had a durag on or cornrows.

Have you ever listened to songs from the caribbean? That's probably why people think it's appropriation, it's not about the visuals. It's about the lyrics and the accent she uses while rapping.

Honestly this is just her repping her city cuz she’s from New York. I don’t see it as appropriation bc she sampled Method man and then had him in the music video and was just showing the different ppl and cultures around New York.

Other than her solo debut … the baddest female, which was made before Lifted, she doesn’t have too bad CA visuals in her MVs. CL went to more traditional Korean visuals than trying to be western, after she left YG. Remember YG had mostly creative control of their artists. CL always had to fight as hard as she could do to things her way. Sometimes she lost that battle. I’m happy 2ne1 doesn’t have toooooo many CA stuff except for some moments in MVs. Dara in desi stuff, CL in cholo stuff.
Her flow and delivery tho… is that CA? Or just finding something that works for her? I mean even Em had to be influenced by someone black like tretch.

It's not appropriaten, when she literally got the green light from the original artist and song writer (Method Man and RZA, respectively, both black men) to cover the song, and then having them appear in the MV for a cameo. It's showing mad respect!

LUKA SABBAT and CL are very close friends since back in the day. It's wild. They still keep in touch now in 2024 they just don't really put their friendship on display. CL used to Facetime LUKA a lot.

Hot Take: I think it was good that CL didn’t take off in 2016 due to the emergence of cancel culture social media & politics in the U.S. Did she have good intentions and was getting co-signs, absolutely. But I’m unsure how it would’ve landed months later had her next MV & Song ‘All In’ (which is a Pop song) dropped. Idk how it would’ve looked to the States on the internet even tho she had range. I think 2019-Present CL is a much more refined artist and knows who she is vs. back then and the music she’s making now is what should be getting her mass attention for how creatively Hi-def she is.
She’s found a way to bridge her Female Hip-Hop Influences & such with her Asian background that’s leagues ahead creatively of the rest of the scene in Korea. I think in hindsight back then she had all the tools & raw energy. Except a fully fleshed artistic identity & full cultural sensitivity. She now has that in abundance. But looking back on ‘Lifted’ it was very slightly forced, but I appreciate it for giving her some career milestones & its intentions. Bc no Kpop female rappers was remixing songs by classic Hip-Hop icons with a proper co-sign. (Barely any Korean rappers in general tbh till this day)
