    I have recently started learning Brazilian Sign Language, and I am amazed at how similar it is to ASL. Apart from the numbers, there were a good deal of signs by the American fellow that I could easily recognize. The numbers from 5 onwards are completely different in BR Sign Language, though.

    I really would like to have saw this with each person signing their version individually, one by one, so i could better appreciate and take note of the variations in sign for each word. The whole thing was too quick for me. lol ! However I do love the concept! I would definitely watch again if y'all could remake this or another version with each country signing one by one instead of simultaneously. Awesome concept, awesome video! 😊

      @Jay also funny when Daniel Durant (the deaf actor from CODA movie ) went to Norway to do a play, he said the Norwegian sign language was more expressive and they use their face mimicry so much, unlike ASL. which I thought was weird since it's frickin' freezing half of the time and they're always outside and still somehow their mouth and fingers aren't frozen to make big gestures ? I thought it was the other way around, which would make more sense. 🤔

    Its especially interesting when one sign means something TOTALLY different in another language. It makes me laugh because I feel a lot of signed languages have some degree of mutual intelligibility, especially the ones in the same language family (like the ones represented here), but then I see something thats like "How did these things get to be OPPOSITES?"

  • @somethingforyou345

      @kayascroggins5512 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is not at all one language. Each country (or sometimes region) develops their own sign language. They are all different signs, with different corresponding grammar. It would be like saying a person who speaks Spanish should be able to speak Portuguese as well, just because they happen to sometimes have similar vocabulary. They are not all mutually intelligible as one language with different dialects

      I see your point, language is part of the culture, but we're not obligated to take away every contry's sign language but instead make learn an universal sign to everyone, a little bit like learning English in school in non-English speaking countries.

    Why isn't sign language universal?

    • @Ruthavecflute
      @Ruthavecflute 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Becuase sign languages were created by different people in different places. It's like asking why there isn't one universal spoken language.

    • @haimmattabadul3053
      @haimmattabadul3053 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Ruthavecflute I was thinking that if someone who has to use sign language has something to communicate to us all, wouldn't that create a barrier, and logistics should be put in place for translation. Also while translating the real essence of the communication might be changed. Just an idea I came across.

    • @Satwr
      @Satwr 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Ruthavecflute I dont know if you ever read this but: I mean... isnt English a kind of universal spoken language? Is there something like that, like is ASL taught aswell when you learn German sign language or something?

    • @Ruthavecflute
      @Ruthavecflute 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Satwr English is certainly used and taught widely, but going off figures fromWikipeadea in 2021 the total number of English speakers was about 1.4 billion, which is a lot but compared to the world pop of 7 billion is less impresive. So 'universal' is a bit of an exageration.
      To your main point, there may well be schools that teach ASL along side a local sign langauge, but in a lot of places education for the Deaf is pretty poor. Sometimes that is because of lack money and knowlage, sometimes becauseof the idea that Deaf people should be taught lip reading and verbal speach without use of sign. The latter aproch works well for some people, but a worryingly high number end up not being fluent in any langauge. In the context of this mess teaching a second sign language isn't a priority in Deaf education.
      Putting all of that aside, Deaf people who know different sign languages tend to be able to comunicate better than hearing people. Usually people say this is because sign languages are more simular to each other than spoken ones, but I think the fact Deaf people get a lot of practice communicating across langage divideds (ie with non-signers) plays a roll as well
