Thanks for the video. I just dug up several dozen Ostrich ferns from a neighbor's property who has too many and I'm going to be planting them around my property the next few days. I'm looking forward to having ferns around!
My dads gardens have been painfully neglected for many years, since my mom passed away. He is not a gardener and I am happy to be able to help BUT I don't really like ferns and when I saw how many ferns were popping up ALL OVER the place, I hoped he didn't like them either and I would just rip them all out. NOPE! He likes them. I am definitely getting rid of some but since I've been digging them out of one bed that I dont want them in, they are actually starting to grow on me, argh, I know, sorry, I had to say it. You are absolutely right, I never knew what a great smell they have! Thanks for ensuring me that I am doing things properly 😊
I like them because my grandma had the whole side of her house filled with them but like day lilies and Lily of the valley the need to be kept under control
Thank you! I’m not so worried about ruining them when I move them. They’re too tall where they are now…they tower over and shade out (almost completely obscure) the other shade plants in my garden (bleeding hearts, hostas, etc.). My Sensitive Ferns are exactly the correct height though so they’re staying. The ostrich ferns will need to be in an area by themselves.
Sounds like there is a lot of variables, but the first thing I would check is moisture, make sure the soil is damp by putting your finger in it. Ordinarily ferns like a lot of organic matter which holds moisture. In a pot use only potting soil. Plants in pots need a lot of watering so start there. Look at the fronds to see if there are any parasites. Japanese beetles love ferns. For insect invasions I spray with dish soap and water. Hope your fern perks up.
@@gardeninginmyyard thanks .. I do believe the potting soil dried out, yesterday I put my finger in soil n it was bone dry..watered and hoping it pops back today..no sign of pests..
Great Video! I've never had a shade garden before. Though I have a large area that is mostly shade. I ordered Ostrich Ferns and a few other native Ferns off the internet. They arrived as bare roots. I planted them in pots in the house first, due to the cold. Within a week I saw fiddle heads. The Fronds are only 8 to 10 inches tall now, but healthy. I mixed in between and in front of the ferns, Hostas, Coral Bells, Bleeding hearts and anything I could find that enjoys a lot of shade. Summer isn't for another month. But the days are warm and I am keeping everything moist. So far the Ferns and other plants are so small, it doesn't look like much yet. But in a few months, I'm expecting everything to really look good. Liked and Subbed and Saved!
Yes most plants are shipped with the tops removed to prevent water loss from the plant. I think this is called dormant bare root. I don't do that if I am moving around plants here at home. When buying new plants I prefer plants with tops in pot with soil. I have bought a lot of bare root plants and they grew just fine.

The video started and I did not even know until you started talking cause the same identical bird is singing here too lol
In WA state
wow what a coincidence, I record all those birds here in Illinois in my yard underneath the bird feeder so it must be a wide ranging bird

I worry too about moving my favorite plants but they most often succeed if I move them early in the spring otherwise give them plenty of water
I have mine in pot ..in dabbed shade .. was doing fabulous, perky fronds…. today fronds are wilted. What to do ? Thanks
