Fascinating forensic analysis! I’m horrified by the amount of damage that a dirty fuel injector caused.

Over in the UK a cousin of mine worked for a Mini dealer when these engines were new and said he felt sorry for the large number of customers that had major failures with these engines and if you were out of warranty it was a large bill to you, he did say BMW did a fair amount of goodwill warranty on number of cars 50/50 or they just traded them in for a new Mini to not be left with an engine replace bill , nice tear down video 👍

Odd. My original W111 went 165k miles with no problems until one of the 3 plastic coolant tees in the engine cooling system broke. Blown head gasket. I put a 90k mile less used engine in my R53 last year and replaced everything that coolant touches (outside of the engine) except for the heater core.

Incredible. I thought you only sold parts I never knew you repaired engines.
After seeing this I will have to buy injectors from you when they become available

Excellent analysis. I see an opportunity for a micro controller to continuously measure the injector pressures to at least forewarn of a leaning issue; this might have saved the engine as well as the all the angst.
    Great Work Thanks, Guys.

Air/Fuel ratio gauge would also have shown the lean condition. If the driver notices that in time, he could throttle down to hopefully save the engine.

That's very true; though, a good micro-controller reads and writes/sends in the neighborhood of 40K times per second, which should detect the lean out way before the sensor, that supports the air/fuel gauge, gets the drivers attention. One could conceivably create an "auto-kill" if the fuel pressure drops between 10 and 20 percent.@@ghostwrench2292

When working perfectly, the Tritec isn't half bad, but that's unfortunately rare. I love my Mini, but I've grown to hate the Tritec. Thus, there's a K20Z3 sitting in my garage which I can't wait to swap in.

@FcpEuro do you sell the oil cooler and the block off plate adapter to attach the auxiliary oil cooler lines?

How did you not flip the block back over and give us a look at the cylinder wall? Pistons are easy to replace, sleeves are not. A good advertisement for regular injector servicing as well as a little extra ring gap in a race based, especially FI motor.
