The sad part about the Hyperscan is that it's a good idea in theory. Imagine a yu-gi-oh duel disk or a magic playmat that had nfc technology that connected with the cards and displayed a holographic image of the creature or spell on your battlefield. I hope the Hyperscan is the virtualboy of this idea

In concept, you're absolutely right that the Hyperscan was great for the time. The problem is that they didn't capitalize on the whole concept well enough, as well as cheaping out on the hardware. If I could remake this, it would be pretty simple - start by using a faster ROM drive, and if it doesn't load fast enough, use cartridges or game cards, to keep the theme going (if it's good enough for the PC-Engine/TurboGrafx, it's good enough for me). Then get a better, stable RFID unit, and again, make sure it can load quickly - I'm thinking it'll need additional RAM. Now, of course, this already puts it out of the "budget" range they were going for. As you mentioned, the whole thing cost $70, with a pack-in game, and the games were 1/3 the cost of "regular" games; so expectations have to be at about 1/3 what you'd get from a SNES or PS1. Then, I would have put together a rudimentary TCG, to give the cards some value outside of the games, rather than tying them explicitly to the hardware and the hardware to them. That way, if the system fails, the cards can still have value, and if the cards fail, the system has value. But then again, I would have approached it from the mindset of creating two "good" products to create something cool, rather than creating something cool that amounts to being two crap products.
I might have also looked into making the Hyperscan more portable, so that said TCG could incorporate the hardware - say, a Wolverine who was leveled in the X-Men game might be more powerful than a stock Spider-Man, that sort of thing.

I was part of the overnight stocking logistics crew at a-then brand new Super Target store. The Toys section was one of my main areas at the time. I remember when it first showed up because it looked liked something that should be in electronics or in the R/C aisle, but, it was with the main action figures. I scanned it over (no pun intended) and immediately just kind of shook my head because it looked like something from my childhood (born in 1984) when gimmicky game toys actually had a market alongside The Nintendo. I don't need to remind any of y'all how the game market was then in the 00s.
A month later it already had "Clearance" stickers on it! I figured it wouldn't last, but, I was still shocked as to just how quickly it was bombing! I think they were all gone before the next month!
Catch is, I'm pretty sure no one bought them and they got sent to the backroom to make space for new products that people will actually *buy*.

The controller lag and the scan time make me think a unique type of turn based RPG using an active time battle style system, would have worked well on this. Like the game would just be some generic fantasy or sci fi thing, no need to go bonkers with the story, but the gameplay would be the main draw. The game comes with all the cards you need, no need for booster packs. You have 2 potion cards, each of which gives you one extra potion per battle, as well as a character swap card, which lets you swap out one character in your party per battle without having to use a turn, and a megaheal card, which restores all your party's health and magic, but can only be used once per BOSS battle. The time limits would work together with the amount of time it takes to scan a card, so you have to think fast. This dude's got a big health bar, and you have 30 seconds until his next attack, do you want to heal up your party, or try swapping out in hopes one of your other members has the stats needed to turn the tables? You only have enough time for one. Fumbling with the cards would add an extra layer of panic for new players, more experienced players could organize them for easier access.

K I will say, I have one of these, and played it a lot as a kid, mainly ben 10, and that transformation is not supposed to have that cacophony of sounds. The buzzer sound is supposed to play when a scan fails for some reason, so either your scanner is jank or the cards are messed up somehow.

You've heard of "NES on a chip" well this has the SNES equivalent at the core, so there's potential to turn that thing into a worthwhile game console. Mattel must have used some expensive cardboard in those packs.

It would probably be a short episode but maybe Nano Fighters. They were wrestling/fighter v-pets released during a high point in both v-pets & the WWF popularity. I remember a bunch of kids at my school getting them when they came out. They seem to be adaptions of a Japanese K-1 Grand Prix v-pet that licensed actual martial artists, though only one of the "pets" appears to be the same & the American version doesn't use the persons name.

I feel like they really tried to do something interesting with the combination of two different markets. But the execution of the games themselves were so poorly done, and could've been a lot better if they were given more development time and not rushed to market.

@@TheNucaKola I wish as a kid I wasn't so easy persuade to buy this thing. Imm pretty sure it was money grab. I mean look at specs, they could've easily made this console as powerful as a ps1 or 2.

Fun fact depending on what part of the USA you're from, a daddy long leg can refer to the opiliones pictured in the video (also known as harvestmans) , a common cellar spider, or a mosquito hawk. Depending on where you are, each of these are considered "daddy long legs" in their respective areas.

  • @MissLilianae

I did own a Hyperscan growing up. I thought it looked super cool and awesome. I will admit I spent *way* too many hours in the different training modes trying to maximize the stats of the characters I had (I bought a booster pack with my console too so I had Wolverine, Lady Deathstroke, the Blob, and IDR who was my second but I remember we had 4 characters). It was, like you said, a cool gimick but ultimately a flop.
I would like to see this idea re-visited with an actual attempt made to make it work and not this low-budget trash.
Thanks for the memories though! :D

My recommendation for old not-great electronic toys would be the R-Zone. There were two version - a headset similar to a DBZ Scouter (but far less cool) and a handheld.
It worked by inserting LCD screens into the console which were then reflected off a clear shiny plastic surface. They were also backlit in red, much like the Virtual Boy but far worse.
Despite using a then-ancient segmented LCD technology, the games actually weren't terrible. There were multiple Star Wars games, including a Death Star trench run (decent) and lightsaber fighting game (less good but not bad).

Nah most sneezes are satisfying though! The hyper scan is more like one of those disgusting sneezes you do when you’re sick and your snot comes glooping out all over your hands... you expect it to be satisfying when you feel the sneeze coming but then you’re proven wrong by just how awful it is when the sneeze actually happens

This was one of those weird products that I missed. Thank you for sharing about it. Definitely an interesting concept back in the day.
So... I know you've done Scannerz but you never mentioned Scan Command in your video. Scan Command was a video game where you raised dinosaurs in Jurassic Park and used DNA (that you got from scanning barcodes and uploading to the game) to improve their stats. You'd then duke them out to the death. Fun game and it was super hard to find a copy in the UK, but I managed! It was in tandem with Jurassic Park 3's release. Would love to see your thoughts.

I also heard that the Hyperscan itself was very brittle and many people who got one ended up having it break in about a week or two. It also had a USB port on it that seemed to serve no purpose because none of the accessories with it could plug into the USB. More points against it.
