    Great video. Very clear and best of all succinct!! This is exactly what I was looking for to fit some external ethernet cabling. I have a question though, it looks like you are drilling down from the angle of the video. Surely any condensate will trip towards the inner wall at that angle. Should you not drill up?

    What length drill bit did you use? I'm looking to run a wire from inside to my external brick wall to power a Ring doorbell. I have tried a 300mm drill bit, but this only got me through the outside wall, past the cavity and partially into the internal wall(I think!). Where I am coming out on the inside wall is very close to our soil stack which is enclosed by an enclosure with an inspection hatch. I have measured and it looks like I should miss it. Otherwise, I'll have a really s**tty problem on my hands!

      You don't for sure unless you have a wall scanner (very expensive).
      I normally check the inside to make sure no sockets, light switches, consumer units or radiators are nearby.

    • @gibtye864
      @gibtye864 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      A wall scanner will not pick up any metal pipe or electrical wiring from an external wall, as you will need to penetrate brick then cavity and breeze block before you hit anything. Where possible drill from inside out on a downward angle, after using a meter to check the area.If you have to drill outside in, check the area internally and carefully drill. Check twice, drill once.

      Okay, you don't do that... What you do is to pass the electric and the ethernet cable through the wall to a weather proof small junction box mounted externally near the camera, then you do the terminations on both cables (socket and ethernet receptacle) and plug everything inside the box, and seal it. You are not supposed to pass all the camera's wires through the wall like that :)

    • @ultimatehandyman
      @ultimatehandyman 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's often easier to drill in the mortar lines, but the mortar lines do not always match up perfectly from the inner skin to the outer skin. If you can drill in the mortar lines there is normally very little outburst.

    Sorry, probably been asked already, but is there a way to reduce the blow out if I'm going from the inside to the outside? I need to put a hole in for a sky cable (near an existing socket) so I want to go in to out to make sure it is in a good position and so I can check I don't hit anything on the way through!
    Thanks

    • @ultimatehandyman
      @ultimatehandyman 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Sometimes there is no option than to drill from inside out, but to minimise breakout you can put a mark on the drill bit using some insulation tape. Providing it's a cavity wall and both skins are block/brick each skin will be 4 inches thick, the cavity is normally 3/4 inches deep, so if you switch the hammer action off when you get to the last two inches of the outer skin you can eliminate the burst out by marking the drill bit at about 9-10 inches. If you have a percussion drill instead of a SDS drill there is much less burst out ;-)

    I've just blown the face off a brick because I had no choice but to drill from the inside out and now it looks a wicked mess - whats the best way to repair that? Simple mortar? I assume there is no way or colouring mortar to look like brick

    • @skamuk1
      @skamuk1 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dr. Ralph Kennedy If possible, use resin to glue the blown piece(s) of brick back on. If that fails, try mixing a sand/cement/dye. There are different colours of dye, choose a colour that best matches the brick you are repairing... Start with a 3:1 sand/cement ratio, and a very small amount of dye. It's not unusual (unless your very experienced) to mix up 3 or 4 different batches until you get the right colour, try less sand, less cement, less dye etc. Make sure you wet-in and then Unibond the brick before you make it good.Next time you drill from inside to out, try using a smaller drill bit which is less likely to blow the brick, then you can use the small hole as a guide to drill from both sides. Or ty to turn off the hammer action roughly 1-2 cm before the bit is about to exit the brick.

      They're fine for DIY and one-time use. Their drill bits are very well reviewed on sites like Amazon. Probably no good for professionals with heavy use. Most DIY people drilling a hole through a brick wall, will only do this 3-4 times in their entire life. A £5 silverline bit is fine for that.

      150mm core drills are widely available. You can buy a cheap one for about £30 so it's not worth the effort to stitch drill a hole, especially if you are going through a cavity wall as it's difficult keeping the drill straight every time in order to keep the holes in the inner and outer skin straight.

    • @morid32
      @morid32 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Buster Nut you can always drill from the inside after clearing the wall. But in some instances like this video where you won't be able to drill from the inside due to obstruction, you'd need to set a reference point that you can trace from the inside out "like an edge of a window" then with height and length measurements you can pin point the drilling spot. Now blowing out bricks.... well that depends on how you use your rotary hammer drill.

    • @ultimatehandyman

      Whoever installed those pipes made a real mess of them, perhaps he used a SDS drill with hammer action and blew the face from the bricks.

      It depends on the bracket really, but I'd try and get fixing holes in as many different bricks as possible and then I'd use resin fixings and decent sized studs to hold the bracket to the wall th-cam.com/video/oUJPjJsdl0c/w-d-xo.html

      It's best to use the fixings they supply with the kit.
      To ti it to the wall hold it up in position and mark through one hole, then drill the hole and use the fixing to fix it to the wall. Once you have done that drill straight through the rest of the fixing holes in the brackets and then insert the fixings. Never try to mark through an item apart from the first fixing hole, it's always best to drill straight through the holes in the bracket.

    Why do you need pipe going through the wall? A bit of an overkill? What does it need protecting from? The cable is already covered in 2 layers of plastic insulation...

    • @ultimatehandyman
      @ultimatehandyman 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      It protects the cable and also makes it much easier to get the cable through the cavity.

    • @nickgilbert1264
      @nickgilbert1264 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mainly the risk of tearing or stripping the insulation as you're trying to push or pull it through a wall. It's way easier if it's in conduit (or in this case, some scrap pipe).

    • @cglees
      @cglees 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sharp brick and mortar can easily strip the cable as you push it through the hole.
