    Willy Wonka mentions snozzwangers and whangdoodles. The same names the centipede was accused of being by the police in "James and the giant peach".
    Roald Dahl shared book universe confirmed???

    2:41:09 What if this happened?:
    Mr. Teavee: Here, give him to me. (Takes Mike Teavee and puts him in his coat pocket and stuffs and handkerchief on top)
    Charlie Bucket: (To Mr. Teavee) Excuse me, but I don't think he could breath in your pocket.

    An interesting observation (not originally mine) on the moral lesson or code in this book. At
    54:17
    Charlie is actually rewarded (by fate/Dahl) for his only act of selfish decadence. Perhaps this teaches that however much you want to help others, you do sometimes have to look after yourself... or am I making excuses for a blunder?

    I used to have this on cassette as a child and I loved Kerry Shale’s voice, it’s so cool, and I think it really works well on this story, and I like his voice just as much as David Tennant’s voice on audiobooks in this day and age, and I love how he does his different voices on all the characters and he did it all very well. It’s a shame that they never were reissued on CD or whatever nowadays, but I really did love this tape back in the day.

      I checked who Kerry Shale is, and to my surprise, it’s the same guy who voices Gordon, Henry, James and Sir Topham Hatt in the CGI series. I thought he sounded familiar when he was doing Grandpa Joe’s voice in this audiobook.

    I utterly adore this version of the story. I had this audiobook as a child and certain aspects of Kerry Shale's performance is burned into my memory. I love his Austrian Willy Wonka. Crazy that he reads the prose in an English accent. I really also love Kerry Shale's readings of Bill Bryson books.

    Exceptionally well read, very enjoyable and more entertaining than both film attempts of Roald Dahl's Story. The 1971 film musical adaptation still remains very magical and heartwarming, especially Charlie Bucket's loyalty & good natured deed.

    um
    why did the narrator make grandpa joe sound like mr popo from dragonball z abridged?
    a bunch of the voices are really weird
    willy wonka is german but augustus gloop is british
    violet sounds like shane dawson
    and Mr salt has a new york accent that makes him sound like a bad donald trumpp impression
    I'm so confused

    • @dan4lau
      @dan4lau 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      This made me laugh! When Grandpa Joe says early on in the book, "What's wrong with me?" I said, "I think you're drunk." I reckon the other grandparents sound borderline insane. Still a fun listen though. I don't suppose there was much logic in the choice of voices, after all few little children would think about it much. Interestingly I had the sequel on cassette when I was little, also read by Shale, but not this book. I had a different version, an abridgement but actually read by Roald Dahl. I think it was this, having two books about the same characters voiced by different readers, that introduced me to the idea that characters could be interpreted differently... and of course to the idea of sequels.

      @@ninjabunnywholivesinsideaw8216 Maybe we can, but his Wonka was definitely his own character. Gene Wilder was more closer to the story in terms of Wonka's personality. Depp is more of a badshit psychotic man-child as supposed to the perky fatherly wizard character Gene Wilder went for.

    • @ninjabunnywholivesinsideaw8216
      @ninjabunnywholivesinsideaw8216 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @Random Guy Gene's portrayal of Willy Wonka is the only thing that was a bit closer to the book than Johnny Depp's. But even Roald Dhal didn't like Gene Wilder's performance as Willy Wonka aside from his psychotic scene during the boat ride through the nightmare tunnel thing. I think Roald Dhal really would have preferred Depp's portrayal, along with the rest of the movie. Don't get me wrong, Gene Wilder was a good actor and I miss him, but it would be interesting to hear Johnny Depp read the book in his Willy Wonka voice.
