    tried this out today and I gotta say this is the best video on how to open the lift gate from the inside, I attached a wire from the broken wire to the hole of the actuator that the other half of the broken piece went in, which is a L shaped piece instead of a zip tie works great . Thank you for the video....subscribed👍

    Just fantastic - both for showing how to do this with the tailgate shut and the ingenious use of cable ties to solve the problem; something I'd never have thought of doing! To pull the broken cable out of the actuator housing and release the lock I used a brake spring pulling tool - basically a thin metal rod with a little hook at one end and a handle at the other; worked a treat and saved some finger pain!

    So first many thanks, and a new way to catch that cable end. I didn't feel like getting my fingers pinched by the plastic cover so I took some bailing wire, and bent the end into a tight V. This I slipped under the cable with the point end down, then spun it around and pulled up. It caught the cable on the first try and even held it tight enough to pull the cable avoiding the need even for the vice grips. That said, would never have gotten there without your excellent video!

    This video is great, I did the repair yesterday. I really appreciate the detail that you went into, particularly on repairing the connector using zip strips (ingeniuos). I only want to add a couple of minor points to the technique you demonstrated. First, I was not able to open the rear panel on my tailgate far enough to get my hand into the actuator, like you did. I have no idea how you got the back panel open that far, I couldn't get the panel around the knobs that the straps on the sides of the tailgate connect to until the tailgate was fully down, at which point I popped the straps off and removed the knobs with a deep socket. So, instead of reaching a hand into the gap between the panel and tailgate, I used the biggest screwdriver I could find and pushed the black plastic cover on the back of the actuator as far open as I could. I then took a pic with a hook end (Harbor Freight item #66836, $1.99) and caught the free end of the cable from inside the actuator enclosure and pulled it where I could get to it. I then used a pair of long needle nosed locking pliers and pulled the end of the cable to the left and the upper gate came open, just as you said it would. I tried fishing it out with a magnet to no avail, it takes something with a hook end. The rest of the repair was a piece of cake and went straight by the instructions in the video. I seriously considered leaving the black plastic cover off of the actuator enclosure in the event I ever have to do this repair again. The inside of my tailgate was extremely clean and the cover is not air or water tight, so I am questioning the need for it. Another problem I had was getting enough light to see what I was working on, my vehicle is black and that makes good spot light absolutely essential to seeing what you are doing; a lighter colored vehicle would definitely be easier to work on. Thanks again for posting this video for those of us who like to work on our own cars. I was very disappointed in the things that Atlantic British left out of their video on this repair, their videos are usually top notch.

      Have you done a video on the problem with LR3's where warm air doesn't blow through the driver's side vents? That's my next repair.

    • @SweetProjectCars
      @SweetProjectCars  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Harold Brewer we have not dont this video as of yet but this may help from our experience with this issue:we have seen a few things cause this, from the heater core, clogging up, the blend motor failing, and even the blend door flap in the heater box failing, both mechanically, and from the seal melting/deteriorating. The best way that I have found to test it is as follows. Turn Econ on, set to a medium fan speed and face level vents, and let the engine warm up. Set one side to hot and the other to cold(not all the way, but one notch before full hot/cold) Check temp coming out. Change one temp to match the other. Check the air temp again. Reverse temp selections that were first set, one hot one cold. Recheck temps, and then both to the same setting as above, and check one last time. Feeling is usually enough of an indicator, no thermometer needed. By setting one to hot and the other to cold, you limit the path of air passing over the heater core, so if it is clogging, you will still get warm air on each side by doing this. It might not be as warm one side to the other, but it will be far better than with both sides set to warm. If the blend motor or door itself has failed, there will not be any change of temp when going from hot-cold to match the other side. If a blend motor/door issue is found to be the case, the motor can be removed, and the door manually moved. This should give full heat on the side that there wasn't before. If it is not, then it is either the door itself not sealing, or the heater core is blocked up and wasn't checked properly above. hope this helps my friend. Mike

      Sweet Project Cars other videos had me sticking a tool in the hole on the actuator, but the actuator wasn’t the problem - it was the tip of the wire had broken off and it was no longer attached to the actuator. I just rigged it up with some cheap wire from Lowe’s and it’s working like a charm.

    So I have an 06 LR3. I tried to pry the panel back and didn’t have much luck. I figured if I could get the LR dealership just to pop it off for a minimal cost, I could fix the rest based on your video. The dealership said that the only way to get the panel off is to break it. I laughed, made some derogatory comment and left. So, do you think there is much difference between 05 and 06 panels and the smug prick is right?
    Should just apply some more pressure in popping it off? Once I figure out how to get that off, I’m confident the rest will be a breeze based on the video and everyone else’s feedback.
