The weight of the 3/4-inch plywood spacers between the knives could be reduced by "swiss cheesing" them with a hole saw, without reducing their strength any. Nice video.
Thank you for showing how you store your tools. Its important to keep your investments sage and user friendly. Most guys just throw the trowels into a bag along with everything else drywall related then throw the bag from the truck to the job. Great design amd whats best about it, its simple. Thank you.
After seeing your knives, I feel good about mine. I use to feel guilty when one of mine got rust on them or I didn't get all the drywall mud off. Thanks for the video!
Thanks for sharing the idea I made one out of 3/4” scraps today on my lunch hour. I was looking for a cheap idea to keep my blades safe and secure in my tool box and it fits perfect
th-cam.com/video/kNbP04GiEe8/w-d-xo.html Here is a link to the one I made from your idea I showcased it on my channel. You deserve all the credit for the great idea Really helps me keep my tools from getting damaged
Dewalt makes the best mud drill. Very efficient tool carriers. I've lost count how many knives I've ruined by just tossing them in a milk crate or bucket. Thanks for the video
Hey there Vancouver Drywaller. I watch most of your videos. This is one is the most helpful I've found as a practicing drywaller. Will be making this box asap. Thank you! "Pointy Stabby"
overbuilding will make things last. hefty is likely to be ok, as you use the box only for transportation and storage. golden advice from humble craftsman.
Since you're worried about weight, drill a lot of 1/2 inch holes in your knife spacers. You can also make holes in the exterior framework, but not as many as the spacers.
My best way to carry my tools now is some one else . but good idea thanks. I'm making that tomorrow. Got a few pieces of 3/4 scrap from a job. Nice job.
Great toolbox design. I've really enjoyed your videos... You've got a knack for easy explanation, and it's helped me a lot with projects on my 1908 home.
I have been trying to come up with something like this for a while. Thank you for the video. I am going to build mine this weekend. Thanks brilliant and simple.
Very useful tips thank you Ben. Takes a man with a firm set of tools to wield such a large and heavily plastered box ...Sure beats my pathetic, purple superstore bin...
Personally I use a flexible Voyager tool bag (Harbor Freights, $12) to carry all the knives. So far, that has been the only way I've found to no damage the knives. Good vid!
I've been watching your videos for a while now... super awesome stuff... I live in BC and have been taping for years now... You my friend.. should do a video on the stinky water bucket... you know what I'm talking about, Duder..
Step 1.) Hide them from your friends husband who thinks he knows how to use tools but uses your expensive favorite 6" for praying tile when your not home!
I saw a video recently of a set of trials that all shared the same clip on handle and the blades all fit in one small box. I've probably got 3 buckets of trials for cement, tile and drywall.
I feel like a star now because I want to tell everybody who watches this video that I was the guy who inspired the making of this video when I asked him how he secures his plaster/taping tools
Ben as a home owner who usually bites of more than I can chew I really appreciate your videos. I wondered if you do one about measuring and cutting skirting board for stairs
Thank you very much for the links! I’ve been searching for those tools for some time now and it’s quite tricky to find some of them from where i’m around. (Middle-Europe)
Nice I tried wood also I came up with a very nice design back I 04 I just now have it front of lic. manufactures..let us pray for drywall tapers n finishers...
I'm not sure how often you check these but what I did was took a milk crate hopefully you know what I'm talking about 😂 but I took a piece of drywall you might have few pieces of scrap around but put a pice of foam in the bottom then put 5 pillars about 3 inches tall one in the middle and one in each corner. Then I cut out a piece of drywall to go in next like a second story. Then I rotozip slots for the knifes to slide down into. Just make sure to put knifes in order to avoid the pillars.the crate I used the hawk slides into it and between the handles then the pan actually sits up on this ledge up towards the top. If I knew how to send you a picture I would but hopefully you get the idea
I use a bucket .i stak them together and have my tools in the top one and carry my mixer in the other hand .one journey why waste time on more than one .
I personally chuck all my tools in my large Husky tool bag and beat feet to get out of the ghetto apartments i always do occupied repairs! I wish had my time to take care of my tools but they still last years how i transport them. So im cool with that. Plus the super padded straps make the bag feel like im not carrying anything.
Someone should clip that part and make a TH-cam poop out of it and after Ben says prison shank it cuts to a clip of his face with the meme sunglasses and a meme joint hanging from his lips with the sound effect of a crowd going "Ohhhh!".😂 Maybe that's just me.
I store my taping tools in tough system boxes, a tote for hand tools (trowel, knives, pan, hawk, screwdrivers) small tough system for my angle tools (flushers, angle head, roller, wd40, mid applicator head, nail spotter) and a medium size tough system for flat boxes (8", 10", 12", with room for future tools) the tote doesn't work very well but I still use it cause it's convenient to stack on the other boxes. Other taping tools I store in milk crates or in the pails in going to use on the job
Hey, this fv*king guy again. I've been trying to avoid drywall repair since Jason Carter punched a hole in his bedroom wall 30 years ago, and I bailed him out. Since I just had an upstairs neighbour dump 5 gallons of water through my hallway light fixture, and also had sparky in to swiss-cheese the living room, it looks like I finally have to tool up. Looks like a tidy setup, and I like that I'll be able to bury it under s*it in my storage locker. Win-win. Not me though, I'm the loser who has to fix his own drywall.
I bought a Ames 24" knife I use for skimming bigger areas I'm thinking about making my box 24 wide because I have no where to keep it safe; right now it just stays behind my truck seat which has been safe but don't want it there forever. So the question is would a 24" box work? I don't think I'd ever be carrying it around I don't hardly use my knives now since using a hawk and trowel. Right now I've been using a DeWalt tool box that has wheels. All my main stuff stays in there.
Love your videos man! You should get a patreon or sell some shirts too- I wanna support you in return for the knowledge but already have my own tools :/
Mexican workers are the best. I will drive up to home depot let a couple of Mexicans jump in the bed of my truck and bring them to my jobs. I have one good hint for anyone wanting to do this. Tell a buddie to show up at quitting time and yell, IMMIGRATION. It really helps with labor costs when they run out the back doors
I think some of us just like to carry more than what our hands can hold when getting on a jobsite. Instead of making making 5 fucking trips just to get your shit in there.

You may pass go and collect $200.
Great idea
Or staggering the handles
My thought was 1/8 hardboard with 1/2x1/2" strips glued at the top to make 3/4" thick hollow sandwiches.
Great idea ma’am
Love your tool box... it looks like mine I made it in 7th grade woodshop. I still use it today 25 years later😅
Wow this video is exactly what I was looking for, I'm going to build my box this week, thank you Ben!

The best tip in this video is to protect your drywall tools with a heavy protective layer of crusted compound.
Lol! I'm thinking he's letting them get a little dirty so that he can then do a video about how to clean your tools. Brilliant!
Thanks for sharing the idea

That is a great idea to keep the tools that way. Thank you for the tips!

Nice box. Very clever. I think I'll do something like that.
Ty for your videos. U have helped more than you know. Just wanted to remind you;).
You can use 1/8" plywood with 3/4" spacers. Thanks for Sharing
now I am going to keep my knifes nice clean thank you

You gotta get a new paddle mixer! The L5 blew my mind and eliminated spin out mess

The box is a great idea. I’m doing to make that asap

what about those long 4ft straiggtedges you use what brand and how ans what are all the uses are they used for

Dude, you’re great at what you do. I’d be glad to have you on my crew, but for Christ sakes clean those tools!
Meh
My husband made me watch this after I left a wall covered with lines. Thank you for saving our marriage. :)
Just made one, should work out a lot better then the milk crate i am using now.
"Prison shank" killed me.
🙂
@@vancouvercarpenter How did you smuggle your prison shank out of prison??? I had to leave mine behind, haha!

@Vancouver Carpenter Your 2" knife link is actually a 1.5" knife
I always keep a can of WD40 and it’s own rag to wipe over the steel to keep them rust free
Ever heard of stainless steel?
@@scwfan08 blue steel has a different flex and finish to it vs. Stainless which also benefits from lubricating after use. Based on my experience.

Thanks!
Nice Video. Very informative
That's sick I just keep my knifes in my pan in the trailer where things go flying.. let's say it's not working out very well.

Not really. I'm terrible with that stuff.

That's a cool toolbox, but where do the trucks go?
If you out trucks on that, you wouldn't need a vehicle
Shoe box:)
Love your videos
Thank you!
I'd like to see how you set up your vehicle
Have you seen his tool box? How do you think his vehicle looks?
I suddenly feel much less bad about that one rusty blade I have >_>
How do you dispose of your cleanup water with joint compound mixed in it?
Give it a real good swooshing around. Then throw it behind the nearest bush duh
Wow, I use 2 maybe 3 different tools, to mud up a whole room??? What are you
doing with all that stuff??
Why are they all dirty ???
I carry a bucket.
How much do u charge per hour to drywall?
I Always get sloppy boxes. Wish I had your fame
What mask do you recommend? Reusable of course.
His looks like a Honeywell or North half mask with the p100/organic vapour cartridges.

Yes, like a shirt that says "Feather Your Edge".
