Destroying the library was really the only way they could get a similar feeling of loss to killing off a character, so I didn't mind it actually. It made the stakes of the Tirek fight really high.

As someone with ADHD, Testing Testing 1, 2, 3 is one of my favorite episodes, I relate to Rainbow Dash and her struggles with standardized education, and her talk with Twilight about how she feels too dumb to learn anything legit made me tear up a little in my rewatch of the show, I know it's not the best episode but it'll always have a special little place in my heart
Aut-adhd here! I felt the same way. Somehow in my degree I became a huge nerd and tended to know things my classmates didn't... helped I was in drama and performance... nowadays I'm a PhD student in epistemology. Its funny, I always thought I was dumb/different to my peers and now I've surpassed a fair few... I wish there was much better support in education for non-traditional learning styles etc etc ...

Glad to know I'm not the only one who thinks it would have been cooler if Shining Armor was the one replaced! Always though it would have been cool to see after Twilight gushing about this amazing brother only for her friends to be met with a huge jerk and stressed Cadance trying to run the wedding by herself. In the episode with Twilight fighting Tirek, the animators did actually have a lot of fun with it. In fact, they actually fought over who would get to do the fight. One person didn't get the part they wanted, so they went HAM on the effects so as to have more fun on it. Apparently the animators actually had quite a bit of creative freedom on this show.
I increasingly disliked the later seasons, but I liked in the finale how the Mane 6 realized something was wrong because Discord *walked* into the room

Yeah I think I always preferred the earlier seasons, even as a young, stupid kid. The Bridle Gossip I think was my favourite and I always hated the school plot/the new cast. Nowadays the first episode is my favourite solely because Twilight is relatable.

Funnily enough, Maud wasn't even introduced until season 4 even though Pinkie already had two unnamed sisters. I don't understand why they didn't just make Maud one of them instead of creating an entirely new sister.
oh my god I didn't even pay attention to the fact that she wasn't even a character in the ep where Pinkie talked of her cutie mark...dang that is sad. We could've gotten them more screentime but instead Maud came along.
This was my experience, but Season 1 - 3. The episode I came back to was A Royal Problem because I heard Celestia finally got an episode and yeah, 'who tf is Starlight and where are the mane 6' were my exact first words lol

I remember pre-streaming days how difficult it would be to watch episodes in the correct order. I remember catching an episode of Ed, Edd, n Eddy after some years and seeing they were in school now and it was pretty crazy. Trying to piece together the story going on in Avatar The Last Airbender when you've just watched a Book 1 episode and the next episode is halfway through Book 2.
As a mixed native I never really was fond of "over a barrel". It just screams racial ignorance and still subscribes to the "natives are savages and will get violent over (rightfully) defending their land". I know this show was just catering to the age old "cowboys and indians" bs but its super off-putting, and really sends a nasty message to those who can comprehend it
Literally, was rewatching recently and had to skip before the halfway point cuz it felt THAT off. As a kid it's like 'cool! Native American stuff on TV, wasn't done great but cool they added it' cuz it felt kinda rare, but being older and understanding more it's like how did they mess up so bad. If it were just a simple disagreement between the buffalo and ponies it would feel different but they deliberately drew parallels to irl events making an uncomfortable dynamic. Makes it look like 'hey, we totally didn't commit a genocide to steal your land and we're nice now, here's a tiny sliver of ur old land and some pies from it' like bruh what. And the worst part is we never even hear of them again, I could understand being unable to get visual depiction, but even when back in applelusa not a soul mentions the buffalo 💀
MLP was never fantastic at its handling of fantasy racism but it really did fall apart the one time they decided to do a direct parallel to human race-relations. I'm glad they learned their lesson immediately after Over A Barrel and we never saw like, ponies putting donkeys in chattel slavery or something.

While The Perfect Pear does make sure to pull tear-jerkers, it’s quite realistic. Losing a parent, or both, is tough and you get to hear thousands of stories about them that you never even knew about. This episode, as well as Sounds of Silence (since Kirins are my fav mythical creatures), will always be my favorite because of how much I could relate to it.

When Rainbow complains about her nickname being put on her team jacket, Spitfire says (and I quote), "That's not how it works around here. We all have our nicknames on our jackets." She then asks Soarin' to verify, calling him by his nickname, 'Clipper'. However, I will grant you this: it's not MUCH set-up, and it's easy to miss, especially since we NEVER see the others in their jackets in this episode. But it IS there regardless.

I’m gonna be real, when the crystal ponies thing was introduced, little middle school me somehow got into my head that princess cadence was a crystal pony and was the monarch of the region, i guess probably because i was watching episodes as they aired, i wasn’t making sure that i saw every episode, and it wasn’t uncommon for me to see episodes out of order. I remember seeing part 1 and 2 of princess cadence’s debut, that shit rocked and the song in part two slapped so hard
But she is the princess of the Crystal Empire, isn't she? Her royal family live in the crytal castle and protect the ponies there.. It is weird that she isn't a Crystal pony, though.

i saw someone point out that they don’t mean magic magic, but the fact a good friendship won’t form unless you have all the elements and a spark of connection between you. magic is meant to be like that spark of connection also i’ve always loved that vinyl doesn’t speak as an autistic person lol. i’ve always read her as also autistic and non verbal because of her headphones and not speaking. i’m glad they kept her non verbal :)
Funny thing about a Canterlot Wedding: Chrysalis replacing Shining Armor instead of Cadance would’ve explained why Celestia wouldn’t notice anything amiss (she wouldn’t know him that well personally like she does Cadance) and it would explain why only Twilight suspects anything (as it’s her literal brother). It would also give an excuse for how the Changelings infiltrated so easily, as Chrysalis legit heading the Palace Guard could just let them in. As for your criticism of Twilight’s attitude during it, I’d say it is more than merited. “Cadance” acts like a straight up jerk to everyone around throughout the episode, so I think that Twilight is definitely justified in being upset and in suspecting something. After all, she did know Cadance pretty well before, and being stressed doesn’t really give anyone a pass to verbally abuse others.
Celestia wouldn’t know her own royal guard captain? I dunno, I think she’s more distant from the random princess (what was she even ruling before the crystal empire). They would probably only really interact for royal stuff… unless the random merch thing about them being related is true??? Idk. I feel like it wouldn’t have worked well personally because people would probably be more inclined to trust Twilight that her own brother is being different, and she would’ve maybe caught on that it was an impostor which SHE WASNT SUPPOSED TO, she’s only supposed to think they turned evil, which makes sense for someone you didn’t interact with since you were a kid. Meanwhile her brother she probably interacted with at LEAST a bit as an adult. Not much as stated but still, it would’ve been much more suspicious to her.
@@poppyseed799 Princess Cadence is legit Celestia’s adopted niece, hence why she assigned Cadence to be Twilight’s (Celestia’s Personal Student) foalsitter. So yeah, I think Celestia would know her own niece far better than she would the Captain of her Royal Guard, who may not have even been selected by her. I doubt she and Shining Armor talk very often. Even if they do, pretty much all of those conversations will be practical or business-oriented. Chrysalis could easily pull off professional interactions without any personal touches. Pulling off Celestia’s niece would’ve been far harder, in reality. Also, why would they believe Twilight? She hasn’t seen her brother in years and her friends have never even heard of him before. Given that, I bet they’d be pretty skeptical that Twilight and him are close anymore. They might think that he changed. Anyway, the Changelings aren’t a widely-known species at the time and they don’t appear to have attacked Equestria publicly before, so no one is going to buy that Shining Armor isn’t Shining Armor. They’re just going to think that he became a jerk while Twilight was in Ponyville or that he’s really stressed out. Plus, if she posed as Shining Armor, Chrysalis would have complete control over the Royal Guard. She could legit lure them away one at a time and replace them with Changelings. By the time that Twilight and Cadence confront her, she already has an army surrounding them. And she’s do it much more easily as Shining Armor than she did as Cadence.

It's called a cockatrice, sometimes a basilisk (though most modern depictions of basilisks are big snakes) and they're really cool. Also wanted to add that the sea ponies are actually hippocampuses, not sure if hippocampuses really turn into hippogryphs in any mythology but yeah! The more you know :3
the wildest thing about Over a Barrel apart from the obvious bad parts is that it has one of the funniest skits in the entire series before that, culminating in Fluttershy's perfect punchline of "I'd like to be a tree." That entire scene is so good and it's right at the front of one of the show's worst episodes. Baffling.

They definitely should have had indigenous writers on the staff for that episode. If I were to edit it, I’d have the agreement at the end of the appalousins sharing their harvest but they’d be required to eventually move the orchard off the bisons land/not plant anymore new trees on their land so for future generations the bisions will have their land but the appolosiousins won’t starve

The buffalo shouldn't be REQUIRED to share the land just because some settlers didn't see if there were any locals when they moved in-- But at the same time, I like a good compromise, they can have the harvest, but after that they have to move, maybe the buffalo know a good spot for them where they don't run on--
The episode that bothered me the most was the episode with Rainbowdash's Parents. Its sweet that they're so supportive but it was borderline creepy and pushy. Rainbow set a clear boundary that they're way way WAY too enthusiastic about it and she got stressed. It made her parents upset and she was totally painted as the bad guy in the situation, which I think is toraly bullshit. Idk it just feels like "If you put boundaries when YOU'RE uncomfortable, then you should feel bad about it!" I despise that episode, as someone who struggles to set boundaries and never has them respected.

Agreed! That really bothered me about that episode. Rainbow had every right to go off on her parents and set boundaries. A parent being supportive is great, but the way they acted would make any child uncomfortable.

what's more frustrating about that episode is that they had the perfect opportunity to put in a 2-sided aesop but just opted for the worse one. it really could've been fixed by rainbow dash at some point saying something along the lines of "listen up and listen good as this point is a fork in the road for you. you can either cease this nonsense, shut up at our events, stop pointing explosives at me, and quit treating me like your trophy. that's option 1; the other option is a pair of restraining orders and you will never speak to me again. your choice." and then rainbow dash's parents pick the first option and stop obsessing over her. because, you know, you CAN be too supportive. if they did this, parental glideance could've been a top 10 episode but nah, familyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy
I watched this show a lot as a little kid, and I remember being so surprised when I went online after the episode where Twilight gets alicorned to find that SO MANY PEOPLE were FURIOUS about it. I thought it was cool lol. So did most kids my age! Y'know, the target demographic! Like, I don't have anything against older folks who were into the show; it's a good series! It really is! But I think a lot of older fans forgot this was primarily a kids show. This kinda this still happens today, like, a lot. Steven Universe, She-Ra, Voltron, Owl House, Miraculous Ladybug, the list goes on. I always see grown ass adults whining about a kids show doing things to appeal to kids.
I don't get why alicorn Twilight got people so mad, it was a logical narrative progression, eventually Twilight would become like her mentor and "ascend"... which would come with its own set of new problems and stories.
I remember I was upset but not in the way most were, I wanted for all of them to become princesses, a little magical girl touch in a way rather than twilight to get the title solo. While I still would've liked to see it, I realize now how hard it would've been to make a good narrative leading up to and after it.
I love early show twilight, she's my favorite pony honestly. A kind of mean and neurotic, bookworm pony who is experiencing having friends for the first time is such a fun idea for a main character and was also super relatable to me as a kid. I wish she kept a bit of her edge after she became a princess, she just felt like generic anime protagonist after that

I need to correct you on ‘A Hearthswarming Tale’ Starlight wasn’t upset ‘nobody liked her’. She just didn’t see the point of Hearthswarming and just wasn’t a fan of the holiday mostly because-like Snowfrost-she didn’t know the true meaning of the holiday.
You kinda forget how simple things were back in the early seasons, the cast was so small it's no wonder why we resorted to giving names and personalities to every background character, cause we literally had nothing else to work with. I think there were only 7 or 8 named male characters in the first season. Also, it's weird to go back to when they would literally spell out the message of each episode in writing. Sure, they wouldn't exactly get subtler with their messaging in later seasons, but they would definitely get more tongue-in-cheek about it. You can also see and hear the team figuring things out as they went, especially with Applejack's noticably pitch-shifted voice and how wonky some of the animations can get. That all being said, there's absolutely a lot of charm to these early seasons. Also, it's just interesting to see what the show started as Vs. What it eventually evolved into.
i remember how when the breezie episode first dropped i was so excited, having been a fan of g3 prior and specifically loving the princess promenade movie, only to then get absolutely crushed when they changed their lore entirely. with age im not really upset by it anymore but geeeez was i angry at the time. they had turned these cute little pony sprites into lanky, long eyelash-ed eyesores that look more like weird bugs than ponies.

Regarding Over A Barrel, I remember it was that an indigenous reservation center actually took offence to the episode over its depiction of native-colonizer conflicts as well as the tone-deaf "sharing is good" moral. Overall, this show while promoting friendship and tolerance definitely felt a bit inconsiderate of other races and cultures at some points...
I mean. I did have ONE tea party, from what I remember, as a little kid. I had it with my older cousin when she came and visited. I had literally no friends as a little kid, so I'm pretty sure I was just excited to have one, and be able to share my experiences with a friend for once.

As a kid, I hated the episode Winter Wrap-Up because I saw it too many times and eventually found the song annoying ahaha, but the rest of my family loved it. My parents still quote "she's awfully strong for little pony" to this day.

I think the off model faces are actually really nice (it just shows confidence) and the characters that feature prominently (starlight, trixie, sunburst, student six, etc) which I really like was also great! Definitely helped that those guys were ONLY in the later seasons, giving those a boost in my eyes
Tea parties are definitely a thing (at least for some kids). I had a fancy ceramic kids tea set that I got from my grandma, and I would play tea parties with my stuffed animals all the time. I used cold water as the tea.
Hi Shunks! Sorry if this is a bit of a weird comment-- 44:55 The depiction of the myth you've displayed here is an incorrect and disrespectful pop culture design. The deer skull is for some reason a weird pop culture thing ?? Where as the actual myth honestly would look more like a very very famished and pale human. This is because the original myth is that if you become too greedy, you will end up craving human flesh and becoming a monster who roams the winter forests hungrily, looking for your next victim. You may notice I am avoiding saying the myth's name, and thats because its actually very bad luck to say it. It is said if you say it, it'll attract them to your location. I've seen contemporary natives call the creature the "Winter Greed" or the "Winter Hunger" to avoid this. I think it sucks the show used the term ESPECIALLY because the spelling with the I is a legit spelling of the myth. I love your videos and this one is fantastic, so this isn't a slight or an accusation in the slightest. I just thought I'd let you know as a native person myself. ^_^ Thank you, if you do listen to me. It is kind of a situation where the pop culture depiction is more prevalent than the original depiction and unfortunately is a really disrespectful one. Haven't finished the video yet, but I'm enjoying it so far! I will say that Lesson Zero is one of my faves BECAUSE Twilight is upset about something so minor. Mostly because I was an anxious kid and I found it relatable, because to you, the issue is not minor and getting brushed off can be frustrating. Also, yeah the way they portrayed the yaks was weird. I'm glad you brought it up. The show has always had some issues with how it portrayed non-ponies, even if their heart was in the right place.

I think Pinkie Keen is more about not having to understand everything. It can be really stressful to try to come up with or have an explanation for everything.
I just wish the episode actually made that the lesson instead of making Twilight just decide to agree with everyone else despite still having no actual reason to do so. The moral of “Sometimes you can’t explain things” or “It’s okay for other people to believe in harmless things that you don’t understand” would be fine, but the way it comes across is like they’re saying “Trying to explain things that other people believe in makes you a big stupid jerk and you should just blindly believe everything the people around you believe.” I know that isn’t the actual intention but it very much can be viewed that way.

You can really tell a lot about the culture of the early 2010's Brony fandom by the fact that people were perfectly fine with an episode that tries to both-sides the issue of colonialism and implied that Native Americans "just had to learn to share", but people *hated* an episode that's message was basically just "have an open mind" to a point that Lauren Faust had to personally apologize for it.

I'm kinda new here, too. I joined this Fandom in late 2021. I don't really have an established opinion on these episodes. I just watch the show and reviews to hear what others think. It's important to listen to others but make your own opinions. It's probably why I'm not as bothered with problems like "out of character moments" or "inconsistent lore."

as someone with undiagnosed adhd, testing testing 1,2,3 is always so painfully relatable to me, it feels silly but it makes me wanna cry sometimes to see how sad and frustrated rainbow dash gets, kind of like those episodes with bart simpson lol kind of similar thing with fluttershy in hurricane fluttershy and pinkie in party of one, and social anxiety and poor self confidence and worrying that your friends secretly hate you
Can I just say that season 1 of MLP is just so comfy and the most nostalgic (along with S2 which was the peak of the fandom) I kinda miss the early 2010s internet what a fun time I joined the fandom around early 2011 and I was entering highschool at the time so browsing the still wild west and kind of a more innocent internet was a blast.
I adored Lesson Zero (and still, it's probably one of my favourite episodes of the entire series) because Twilight is so off her rocker, but it feels like we're getting aquainted with a different side of the character that there were hints of in season one. She's always been a little neurotic, but this LZ is seeing her hit peak neuroses. Twilight's hijinks are hilarious, Spike playing straightman is great, and the weirdness of the episode (the Sun acting like a clock, the fourth wall breaks, the way Twilight visibly deteriorates...), it's an episode that really feels different from season one, but in a good way. I will stan Lesson Zero in 2023 just as hard as I did in 2012 lmao. IMO the first five episodes of season two were a solid gold run.
Not sure if a fun fact but a fact non the less the Hoofields and Mcolts episode was based off a real historical thing that happened between two feuding families where they basically went to war with each other and committed horrible atrocities against one and other They affected their town so badly the government had to get involved and send the national guard and force the two families to sign a treaty

Apatas have one hyperspecific power (super speed, communication with plantlife). And Zebras can’t do any magic whatsoever. It would have been cool to see more Zebras in general, like the Griffonstone episode where we see all the combinations of Cat-Birds, but I thought it was okay.

As someone with ADHD, Testing Testing 1, 2, 3 is one of my favorite episodes, I relate to Rainbow Dash and her struggles with standardized education, and her talk with Twilight about how she feels too dumb to learn anything legit made me tear up a little in my rewatch of the show, I know it's not the best episode but it'll always have a special little place in my heart

Somehow in my degree I became a huge nerd and tended to know things my classmates didn't... helped I was in drama and performance... nowadays I'm a PhD student in epistemology. Its funny, I always thought I was dumb/different to my peers and now I've surpassed a fair few... I wish there was much better support in education for non-traditional learning styles etc etc ...

In the episode with Twilight fighting Tirek, the animators did actually have a lot of fun with it. In fact, they actually fought over who would get to do the fight. One person didn't get the part they wanted, so they went HAM on the effects so as to have more fun on it. Apparently the animators actually had quite a bit of creative freedom on this show.

Yeah I think I always preferred the earlier seasons, even as a young, stupid kid. The Bridle Gossip I think was my favourite and I always hated the school plot/the new cast. Nowadays the first episode is my favourite solely because Twilight is relatable.

I remember pre-streaming days how difficult it would be to watch episodes in the correct order. I remember catching an episode of Ed, Edd, n Eddy after some years and seeing they were in school now and it was pretty crazy. Trying to piece together the story going on in Avatar The Last Airbender when you've just watched a Book 1 episode and the next episode is halfway through Book 2.
As a mixed native I never really was fond of "over a barrel". It just screams racial ignorance and still subscribes to the "natives are savages and will get violent over (rightfully) defending their land". I know this show was just catering to the age old "cowboys and indians" bs but its super off-putting, and really sends a nasty message to those who can comprehend it

If it were just a simple disagreement between the buffalo and ponies it would feel different but they deliberately drew parallels to irl events making an uncomfortable dynamic. Makes it look like 'hey, we totally didn't commit a genocide to steal your land and we're nice now, here's a tiny sliver of ur old land and some pies from it' like bruh what. And the worst part is we never even hear of them again, I could understand being unable to get visual depiction, but even when back in applelusa not a soul mentions the buffalo 💀
MLP was never fantastic at its handling of fantasy racism but it really did fall apart the one time they decided to do a direct parallel to human race-relations. I'm glad they learned their lesson immediately after Over A Barrel and we never saw like, ponies putting donkeys in chattel slavery or something.

While The Perfect Pear does make sure to pull tear-jerkers, it’s quite realistic. Losing a parent, or both, is tough and you get to hear thousands of stories about them that you never even knew about.

However, I will grant you this: it's not MUCH set-up, and it's easy to miss, especially since we NEVER see the others in their jackets in this episode. But it IS there regardless.

I’m gonna be real, when the crystal ponies thing was introduced, little middle school me somehow got into my head that princess cadence was a crystal pony and was the monarch of the region, i guess probably because i was watching episodes as they aired, i wasn’t making sure that i saw every episode, and it wasn’t uncommon for me to see episodes out of order. I remember seeing part 1 and 2 of princess cadence’s debut, that shit rocked and the song in part two slapped so hard

i saw someone point out that they don’t mean magic magic, but the fact a good friendship won’t form unless you have all the elements and a spark of connection between you. magic is meant to be like that spark of connection

Funny thing about a Canterlot Wedding: Chrysalis replacing Shining Armor instead of Cadance would’ve explained why Celestia wouldn’t notice anything amiss (she wouldn’t know him that well personally like she does Cadance) and it would explain why only Twilight suspects anything (as it’s her literal brother).
It would also give an excuse for how the Changelings infiltrated so easily, as Chrysalis legit heading the Palace Guard could just let them in.
As for your criticism of Twilight’s attitude during it, I’d say it is more than merited. “Cadance” acts like a straight up jerk to everyone around throughout the episode, so I think that Twilight is definitely justified in being upset and in suspecting something. After all, she did know Cadance pretty well before, and being stressed doesn’t really give anyone a pass to verbally abuse others.
Celestia wouldn’t know her own royal guard captain? I dunno, I think she’s more distant from the random princess (what was she even ruling before the crystal empire). They would probably only really interact for royal stuff… unless the random merch thing about them being related is true??? Idk.
I feel like it wouldn’t have worked well personally because people would probably be more inclined to trust Twilight that her own brother is being different, and she would’ve maybe caught on that it was an impostor which SHE WASNT SUPPOSED TO, she’s only supposed to think they turned evil, which makes sense for someone you didn’t interact with since you were a kid. Meanwhile her brother she probably interacted with at LEAST a bit as an adult. Not much as stated but still, it would’ve been much more suspicious to her.
@@poppyseed799 Princess Cadence is legit Celestia’s adopted niece, hence why she assigned Cadence to be Twilight’s (Celestia’s Personal Student) foalsitter. So yeah, I think Celestia would know her own niece far better than she would the Captain of her Royal Guard, who may not have even been selected by her. I doubt she and Shining Armor talk very often. Even if they do, pretty much all of those conversations will be practical or business-oriented.
Chrysalis could easily pull off professional interactions without any personal touches. Pulling off Celestia’s niece would’ve been far harder, in reality.
Also, why would they believe Twilight? She hasn’t seen her brother in years and her friends have never even heard of him before. Given that, I bet they’d be pretty skeptical that Twilight and him are close anymore. They might think that he changed.
Anyway, the Changelings aren’t a widely-known species at the time and they don’t appear to have attacked Equestria publicly before, so no one is going to buy that Shining Armor isn’t Shining Armor. They’re just going to think that he became a jerk while Twilight was in Ponyville or that he’s really stressed out.
Plus, if she posed as Shining Armor, Chrysalis would have complete control over the Royal Guard. She could legit lure them away one at a time and replace them with Changelings. By the time that Twilight and Cadence confront her, she already has an army surrounding them. And she’s do it much more easily as Shining Armor than she did as Cadence.

It's called a cockatrice, sometimes a basilisk (though most modern depictions of basilisks are big snakes) and they're really cool. Also wanted to add that the sea ponies are actually hippocampuses, not sure if hippocampuses really turn into hippogryphs in any mythology but yeah! The more you know :3

the wildest thing about Over a Barrel apart from the obvious bad parts is that it has one of the funniest skits in the entire series before that, culminating in Fluttershy's perfect punchline of "I'd like to be a tree." That entire scene is so good and it's right at the front of one of the show's worst episodes. Baffling.

It's entirely plausible that whatever organization approved of the episode either didn't see the full thing, or were so desperate for any sort of slightly mildly positive portrayal of indigenous ppl where they don't die in the end that they approved it anyways-- or hey maybe it being approved was just made up-- because ain't no way that episode would be approved by any self respecting native. That episode is.. dog water to say the least--
Right, they could've kept irl history out of it but they HAD to imply such events, like they could've made a completely different lore for the show and been more friendship based problems for the 6 to fix between the two groups rather than implied genocide and theft of land among other things 💀 I bet the organization that agreed never saw the episode, must've been a written permission before the episode was created/written itself cuz holy moly, dog water is a nice way to put it for sure
They definitely should have had indigenous writers on the staff for that episode. If I were to edit it, I’d have the agreement at the end of the appalousins sharing their harvest but they’d be required to eventually move the orchard off the bisons land/not plant anymore new trees on their land so for future generations the bisions will have their land but the appolosiousins won’t starve

The episode that bothered me the most was the episode with Rainbowdash's Parents. Its sweet that they're so supportive but it was borderline creepy and pushy. Rainbow set a clear boundary that they're way way WAY too enthusiastic about it and she got stressed. It made her parents upset and she was totally painted as the bad guy in the situation, which I think is toraly bullshit. Idk it just feels like "If you put boundaries when YOU'RE uncomfortable, then you should feel bad about it!" I despise that episode, as someone who struggles to set boundaries and never has them respected.

Agreed! That really bothered me about that episode. Rainbow had every right to go off on her parents and set boundaries. A parent being supportive is great, but the way they acted would make any child uncomfortable.

what's more frustrating about that episode is that they had the perfect opportunity to put in a 2-sided aesop but just opted for the worse one. it really could've been fixed by rainbow dash at some point saying something along the lines of "listen up and listen good as this point is a fork in the road for you. you can either cease this nonsense, shut up at our events, stop pointing explosives at me, and quit treating me like your trophy. that's option 1; the other option is a pair of restraining orders and you will never speak to me again. your choice." and then rainbow dash's parents pick the first option and stop obsessing over her. because, you know, you CAN be too supportive. if they did this, parental glideance could've been a top 10 episode but nah, familyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy

I watched this show a lot as a little kid, and I remember being so surprised when I went online after the episode where Twilight gets alicorned to find that SO MANY PEOPLE were FURIOUS about it. I thought it was cool lol. So did most kids my age! Y'know, the target demographic! Like, I don't have anything against older folks who were into the show; it's a good series! It really is! But I think a lot of older fans forgot this was primarily a kids show. This kinda this still happens today, like, a lot. Steven Universe, She-Ra, Voltron, Owl House, Miraculous Ladybug, the list goes on. I always see grown ass adults whining about a kids show doing things to appeal to kids.

I don't get why alicorn Twilight got people so mad, it was a logical narrative progression, eventually Twilight would become like her mentor and "ascend"... which would come with its own set of new problems and stories.
I remember I was upset but not in the way most were, I wanted for all of them to become princesses, a little magical girl touch in a way rather than twilight to get the title solo. While I still would've liked to see it, I realize now how hard it would've been to make a good narrative leading up to and after it.

I need to correct you on ‘A Hearthswarming Tale’
Starlight wasn’t upset ‘nobody liked her’. She just didn’t see the point of Hearthswarming and just wasn’t a fan of the holiday mostly because-like Snowfrost-she didn’t know the true meaning of the holiday.
You kinda forget how simple things were back in the early seasons, the cast was so small it's no wonder why we resorted to giving names and personalities to every background character, cause we literally had nothing else to work with.
I think there were only 7 or 8 named male characters in the first season.
Also, it's weird to go back to when they would literally spell out the message of each episode in writing. Sure, they wouldn't exactly get subtler with their messaging in later seasons, but they would definitely get more tongue-in-cheek about it.
You can also see and hear the team figuring things out as they went, especially with Applejack's noticably pitch-shifted voice and how wonky some of the animations can get.
That all being said, there's absolutely a lot of charm to these early seasons. Also, it's just interesting to see what the show started as Vs. What it eventually evolved into.
i remember how when the breezie episode first dropped i was so excited, having been a fan of g3 prior and specifically loving the princess promenade movie, only to then get absolutely crushed when they changed their lore entirely. with age im not really upset by it anymore but geeeez was i angry at the time. they had turned these cute little pony sprites into lanky, long eyelash-ed eyesores that look more like weird bugs than ponies.

Regarding Over A Barrel, I remember it was that an indigenous reservation center actually took offence to the episode over its depiction of native-colonizer conflicts as well as the tone-deaf "sharing is good" moral. Overall, this show while promoting friendship and tolerance definitely felt a bit inconsiderate of other races and cultures at some points...
I mean. I did have ONE tea party, from what I remember, as a little kid. I had it with my older cousin when she came and visited. I had literally no friends as a little kid, so I'm pretty sure I was just excited to have one, and be able to share my experiences with a friend for once.

I personally really liked the later seasons. Sure, they had more flop episodes than usual, but sue me for liking something that was fun! I think the off model faces are actually really nice (it just shows confidence) and the characters that feature prominently (starlight, trixie, sunburst, student six, etc) which I really like was also great! Definitely helped that those guys were ONLY in the later seasons, giving those a boost in my eyes

Tea parties are definitely a thing (at least for some kids). I had a fancy ceramic kids tea set that I got from my grandma, and I would play tea parties with my stuffed animals all the time. I used cold water as the tea.

The deer skull is for some reason a weird pop culture thing ?? Where as the actual myth honestly would look more like a very very famished and pale human. This is because the original myth is that if you become too greedy, you will end up craving human flesh and becoming a monster who roams the winter forests hungrily, looking for your next victim. You may notice I am avoiding saying the myth's name, and thats because its actually very bad luck to say it. It is said if you say it, it'll attract them to your location. I've seen contemporary natives call the creature the "Winter Greed" or the "Winter Hunger" to avoid this.
I think it sucks the show used the term ESPECIALLY because the spelling with the I is a legit spelling of the myth. I love your videos and this one is fantastic, so this isn't a slight or an accusation in the slightest. It is kind of a situation where the pop culture depiction is more prevalent than the original depiction and unfortunately is a really disrespectful one. Haven't finished the video yet, but I'm enjoying it so far! I will say that Lesson Zero is one of my faves BECAUSE Twilight is upset about something so minor. Mostly because I was an anxious kid and I found it relatable, because to you, the issue is not minor and getting brushed off can be frustrating.
Also, yeah the way they portrayed the yaks was weird. I'm glad you brought it up. The show has always had some issues with how it portrayed non-ponies, even if their heart was in the right place.

1:59:23 This is a banger episode! I absolutely love the concept of a pony's mark glowing when they are using their talent in the purest, most true to themselves way! We saw it with Diamond Tiara and again here. They COULD have done so much with that!
I think Pinkie Keen is more about not having to understand everything. It can be really stressful to try to come up with or have an explanation for everything.
I just wish the episode actually made that the lesson instead of making Twilight just decide to agree with everyone else despite still having no actual reason to do so. The moral of “Sometimes you can’t explain things” or “It’s okay for other people to believe in harmless things that you don’t understand” would be fine, but the way it comes across is like they’re saying “Trying to explain things that other people believe in makes you a big stupid jerk and you should just blindly believe everything the people around you believe.” I know that isn’t the actual intention but it very much can be viewed that way.

You can really tell a lot about the culture of the early 2010's Brony fandom by the fact that people were perfectly fine with an episode that tries to both-sides the issue of colonialism and implied that Native Americans "just had to learn to share", but people *hated* an episode that's message was basically just "have an open mind" to a point that Lauren Faust had to personally apologize for it.

You have no ideia how much time i was waiting for someone to do a decent review on mlp episodes, i'm actually not even that old in the fandom, i'm a new mlp fan, but i always like to see different opinions on episodes i just watched, but my god, all i got to see was some 10 years old video, really angry brony complaining about something and something, just taking the show more serious than it should be, they also always would talk about the writers...like come on....they are humans...it just felt so weird and rude. Your channel and few others, have been such a comfortable place to watch mlp content, i just wanted to thank you for these videos, you're a huge inspiration for me if i ever do videos in the future.
I'm kinda new here, too. I joined this Fandom in late 2021. I don't really have an established opinion on these episodes. I just watch the show and reviews to hear what others think. It's important to listen to others but make your own opinions. It's probably why I'm not as bothered with problems like "out of character moments" or "inconsistent lore."
As someone with a bit more of a Ninjago hyperfixation than MLP, hearing that Blueblood is voiced by Vincent Tong freaking broke me. I had to go fact check lmao

as someone with undiagnosed adhd, testing testing 1,2,3 is always so painfully relatable to me, it feels silly but it makes me wanna cry sometimes to see how sad and frustrated rainbow dash gets, kind of like those episodes with bart simpson lol
kind of similar thing with fluttershy in hurricane fluttershy and pinkie in party of one, and social anxiety and poor self confidence and worrying that your friends secretly hate you

Can I just say that season 1 of MLP is just so comfy and the most nostalgic (along with S2 which was the peak of the fandom)
I kinda miss the early 2010s internet what a fun time
I joined the fandom around early 2011 and I was entering highschool at the time so browsing the still wild west and kind of a more innocent internet was a blast.
I adored Lesson Zero (and still, it's probably one of my favourite episodes of the entire series) because Twilight is so off her rocker, but it feels like we're getting aquainted with a different side of the character that there were hints of in season one. She's always been a little neurotic, but this LZ is seeing her hit peak neuroses.
Twilight's hijinks are hilarious, Spike playing straightman is great, and the weirdness of the episode (the Sun acting like a clock, the fourth wall breaks, the way Twilight visibly deteriorates...), it's an episode that really feels different from season one, but in a good way. I will stan Lesson Zero in 2023 just as hard as I did in 2012 lmao.
IMO the first five episodes of season two were a solid gold run.
Not sure if a fun fact but a fact non the less the Hoofields and Mcolts episode was based off a real historical thing that happened between two feuding families where they basically went to war with each other and committed horrible atrocities against one and other
They affected their town so badly the government had to get involved and send the national guard and force the two families to sign a treaty

12:48 So in the comics, Zebras come from a land called “Farasi”, which is home to two other races, Apatas and Kelpies. Kelpies can control one state of water (liquid, ice, gas). Apatas have one hyperspecific power (super speed, communication with plantlife). And Zebras can’t do any magic whatsoever.
It would have been cool to see more Zebras in general, like the Griffonstone episode where we see all the combinations of Cat-Birds, but I thought it was okay.
HELP the daughter of discord reference caught me off guard because when you had SAID draconequus, I remembered the line about cheerilee being the only one who could say it right, and then my brain went to the scene with him and the baby in the clouds after the fake fluttershy thing- and then i just process 'daughter of discord' and 'mothball' in a few seconds lmao
I swear to god I always thought that I wouldn't remember any mlp episode because I was too young but man I REMEMBERED THE WHOLE 1ST SEASON like I even remember what i was doing watching the episode the nostalgia goes hard

Brotherhooves Social was always my favorite episode mostly because I thought Big Mac was very sweet and relatable but I can definitely see the negative connotations with it
Same! I thought it was a cute episode, especially the end, but I see how it can be very uncomfortable, especially like that rd line like that triggered me and I'm a trans guy lol. Transphobic dashie is not an idea I wanna think about 😭. I wish there was more big mac and applebloom episodes.
Yeah it was really cute and fun. I know certain people don't and that's fine it was stupid but in a good way imo. I liked it

They made it into a trans affirming comic, where Big Mac is transfem and the other Apples affirm her :) highly recommend! It's called "Apples in the Orchard!" (low-key BEGGING y'all to read it)

@@twindrill2852 "bisexual" means attraction to more than one gender, meaning that a bi lesbian could be attracted to women and genders other than man, like nonbinary people or others. Not sure why that's difficult to understand, other than people trying to gatekeep labels unnecessarily. Yes they could use sapphic, but seriously, who the heck cares? why is it so needed to put queer people into concrete boxes?
