I like the Overseas WAAAAY more than PP and AP steel sports offerings.... I was in the VC Boutique in December in Zurich.....they offered the Overseas in 38 pieces with whitish-silver dial with a medium blue outer ring on the dial...(Zurich flag colors)....gorgeous! Thanks Tim!
For a smaller wrist, Royal oak comes in 37mm with same finishing and quality. No such option from overseas or I would consider it. I also have a 16cm wrist and the overseas’ rigid bracelet outcropping overhangs my wrist when I try it on, as it does yours. I’ve tried to want it many times (especially dual time) but it’s just too big for me.
Great comparison, as always Tim. I’ve had a soft spot for the VC since it was released. One thing I couldn’t help but notice, in all your videos on the new Overseas there has never been any mention of its 2-4mm micro-adjustment. Any reason to not mention this extremely useful feature?
Tim, the thing you didn’t mention in your review is that the movement of the AP is clearly undersized for the size of the watch. Although the market values the AP more, I think the VC has more investment by the company in the watch.
Owned both the AP 15400 and a 2nd Gen VC 49150 at the same time. I can tell you the AP is the ultimate scratch magnet, no matter how careful you are, 6 months on the wrist and it will look tired. The VC is a far more durable . That said, I’m flipping my Rolex,s and buying a blue dial AP chrono and a VC 4500 black dial. They are both outstanding watches and I couldn’t decide which is better. Thanks Tim for another great comparison vid👍🏼
The price might have something to do with it. Fantastic looking watch. Modern with modern features. It is selling well enough, as this is on pace as the highest selling overseas ever. They have sold more in almost three years than they sold in the last ten.
The problem with the VC is that apart from its great blue finish, the dial is just a very plain non-distinct design. I’d still go with the RO. Still I love the VC bracelet’s look and easy interchangeability with those supplied alternative straps.
Both look really fantastic, and both have their elements that I really like and others that I dislike. but if I had to choose one from both to take (not looking on price and availability) I will take the Royal Oak, but if I am buying right now I would be buying a second hand Overseas.
Tim, you really need to stop making videos of the new VC Overseas. Having had this watch on my wrist at an AD, I can say it is exquisite and frankly would be a terrific “one watch” with the versatility it offers.
I own the AP Royal Oak 15400ST with the silver dial. One of the last ones ever produced before the new 15500 series was introduced without the silver dial option. The only complaint I have with it is the bracelet. No extension link for when your wrist swells. Other than that it is the perfect watch. Keeps time to within 3 seconds a week. Love watching your videos Tim!!
I would have the VC every day of the week I have seen the watch and the dial is just phenomenal and I have never seen any better blue dial, pictures don't do it justice it has to be seen in the flesh it's mesmerising, I can't say anymore than that!
VC’s lineup shows elegant refined grace with modern twist on classic designs. I hope to own a VC OS, Quai, or harmony one day. AP is kind of a one hit wonder, relying on its RO success.
I recently purchased the Overseas and i love it..i was in the market for a Blue dialed Sky dweller but as we all know they are like unicorns ! Together with vastly inflated second hand prices. I decided to look at the VC and i was blown away...i walked out of the store with the piece without no 2yr wait, i got a sizeable discount from the RRP and also some VC goodies thrown in....i encourage others to give the VC experience a go....
@@jannbhatti653 Wow that is a 15% discount!!! I can take a flight to UK, buy at that price and still save money rather than buying at the pathetic discount of 3% here :D I also see online retailers on Chrono24 with great discounts.
My feeling, based on my experience trying on watches, is Tim over estimates how small of a wrist can wear a large watch with good proportion. I have a 18cm wrist and I feel this VC is too big for me. I wouldn't want to go much above 50cm end link-to-end link on my 18cm wrist. lol @ "if I had to guess at the fabrication".
Mark S He tends to refer to the absolute minimum wrist size the watch can be worn securely, because a watch too big can slide up and down the arm, or even off the hand, if it’s too small. Also, some people still like the look off a large watch, and his recommendations tend to factor that in. So you’re right that if you have a preference for smaller watches, you definitely need to add at least 2-3cm onto his recommendation. That said, as someone with a 20cm wrist that could pull off an IWC Big Pilot, I tend to worry if it’s too small, rather than too big.
Anyone who has owned both will soon realise the AP is not a practical watch in the slightest.. it has to be the ultimate scratch magnet, and those sharp edges just love the dings!
Here is a crazy idea, since the bracelet tapers it's not like you will dimension with the first links, but all the links have screws because it is easier to polish that maltese cross when you take it to have it serviced.
Face off with a overhyped PP. compare with the VC overseas, the Nautilus looks like a Teletubby from the 80s, I guess that’s where Gérald Genta get his design clue after he fixed for AP
for me the top of the Holy Trinity has always been VC.. while the Royal Oak goes back to 1972, and the VC (arguably to 1976 but most say 1992).. the company Vacheron Constantin has been in continuous business since 1755! They are truly the "Father" position of the Holy Trinity.
I love that Overseas! Now, that said, the word “Overseas” implies that it’s a traveler’s watch and the most convenient complication on a traveler’s watch is a GMT with rapid adjust 12-hour hand. I think that’s what they should do and they could place the 24-hour indices on the outer dial ring where they currently place the sub-minute indices as sub-minute indices are unnecessary on a non-chronograph. Especially when those said sub-minute indices frequently don’t match the frequency of the movement anyways.
JumboJetPilot There is a dual time version of the Overseas, released in 2018, which does feature a quick set hour hand. The Overseas also launched in 2016 with a World-timer along side the three hand and chronograph. I definitely prefer the dual-time though, because it’s about 2mm thicker, but otherwise identical, to this 41mm three hand.
Hi Tim, I have a question concerning the Overseas. You said in this video that from end link to end link the measurement is 57.6 mm. But in your other 2 Overseas videos you said the end link to end link is 55.3 mm and 56.5 mm. That's a big difference. Could you please double-check and let me know which of the three measurements is correct? Thanks ;-) I love your channel. Keep up the great work! T-
when placed side by side, it's a little crazy how much nicer the VC is. Not that I'd turn down an AP or anything. I've always been a Gerald Genta fan, but IMO this is a case of a watch surpassing it's inspiration.
Sitting on the fence here, I like both. This is really a three way with the Patek Nautilus as well. AP is the more iconic design, but the VC is probably better value on pre owned sale. Very few reading this will be buying brand new from an AD. Very few will be buying preowned. Good luck to anyone in the position to choose. A good dilema to have.
One thing that does go against VC is that it's now part of the Richmont Group, whereas AP is an "independent" and therefore there is that element which takes away some the allure from VC
I just bought one after selling my 5711/1A after 9 years . My AD automatically offered me 5 years upgrade ... I don't think there's much to worry about . Any issues will become apparent within 2 years
I own both the blue 15400 and the brown dial Overseas and they’re equally beautiful. They may seem similar in form but once you analyze it down to the small details, they’re very much different and don’t overlap in my collection . IMO, the brown dial is the nicest followed by the blue then the black. You should see it in person since photos don’t really do the brown dial justice.
I guess it depends on your personal style, but I could never see a brown dial watch fitting in with my wardrobe. I wear a lot of grey/blue/black so it would have to be blue or black dial for me.
Really hard to choose between these 2 as I love both. Probably the AP, as it's a better investment, although the VC is much more affordable used, and by far the most affordable Holy Trinity watch in this class..
RE: the VC "innovative engineering features like quick release lugs and display casebacks"...there is some ingenuity with quick release lugs but also questions about their security...but a display caseback being called "innovative engineering"? PP & AP have been doing that for years. VC makes a new movement but with antique technology: no hacking, no silicon, no full bridge, no free-sprung balance...it's barely an upgrade over the previous Frederic Piguet (I think it was?).
