    I recently got a 1928 Singer treadle machine given to me for helping take care of a grandmother to 3 really great lady and gents. I am amazed that fabric can be created like this with this machine. I cannot wait to get mine going. You are a very talented lady.

    Greetings from the Czech Republic, madam. I got a sewing machine for Christmas and thought I would only use it for things like shortening the jeans. But to my surprise, it is also an embroidery machine so I started looking up some tutorials. And then I found you. I am so hooked that I keep on watching your videos and ideas and also coming up with my own. Thank you so much for posting these videos. You are so gifted and special. Wishing you kilometres of non tearing threads and strong eyes.

    This is So Good! It reminds me of watching a spider spinning its web. The 'manual' zigzag stitching is awesome! Treadle and hand crank sewing machines are so wonderful for the necessary accurate and intricate stitching that a project like this requires! If you don't have a treadle or hand crank sewing machine, you are missing out on one of the truly 'soul-soothing 'ways of sewing!

    I just started embroidery on a standard singer sewing machine and if it was not for watching you do it I would have given up but you helped me and I just finished two poodles on a bath robe and I cannot believe how well they came out! wow just wow I'm hooked! Thank you for posting this you gave me the courage to do this! Thank You so much!

    Ms. Marilyn!!! Oh my!!! How beautiful! I'm getting my mother-in-law's treadle sewing machine working...and learning how to use it. You'd never guess, my husband, who apparently watched his mother more than anyone suspected, is teaching me. lol I so want to do embroidery and this lace making on my machine. Thank you so very much for your video. I just never knew this could even be done.

      +Bonnie Hyden ..I actually just learned how to use a vintage machine like this a little over a year ago and I have so much fun with it! I am just getting another video ready to post on some more fun stuff you can do with your treadle! Have fun learning and if I can help in anyway let me know...Be sure to watch my other video on getting your machine ready for embroidery. I also have a Facebook group that has people from all over the world posting videos of their amazing work......"Classic Sewing Machine Embroidery Artists"....You would love looking at their work!

      +Marilyn Lee Dear Marilyn, can you share (if possible) what threads you work with? I have tried a few and they keep on breaking so often. Maybe my speed is not the most convenient. Thanks in a advance and looking forward to seeing more amazing videos :-)

    • @MarilynLeefabricthreadartist
      @MarilynLeefabricthreadartist  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Cecilia Alva ..........I use mostly Isacord and Floriani.......some Sulky....all embroidery thread. I'm not sure why your thread keeps breaking.......Are your tensions set correctly? Try loosening up your top tension and also what size needle are you using? That will make a difference................What sort of machine are you using? All of these things will make a difference.............

    • @anazechner5833
      @anazechner5833 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Marilyn Lee thank you for the tip. I will try other thread brands and see how well they perform. I think for me speed is a factor for breaking my thread. I just love watching your videos. You are a true artist :-)

      I agree completely! I was making new curtains for my house a couple of days ago and I opted to use the treadle instead of the new fangled electric machine. I'd rather treadle! Just like crocheting...relaxing. I've crocheted myself to sleep many times.

    • @MarilynLeefabricthreadartist
      @MarilynLeefabricthreadartist  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +cdb8315 Thank you! I have four treadle sewing machines that I use. I prefer the vintage machines with a rotary bobbin. I don't think that the machines with a shuttle bobbin work as well. You can do this on modern machines also but the advantage have with a treadle is that you can go so super slow and you have a lot more control of your work then. I think that is very important when you are just learning how.

    • @equitime77
      @equitime77 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Marilyn Lee This what what I was wondering, how difficult would it be to do this with a motored machine. For health reasons a treadle wouldnt be appropriate. Getting the machine to go really really slow is difficult but that is what I am currently working on.

    • @MarilynLeefabricthreadartist
      @MarilynLeefabricthreadartist  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +equitime77 .....You can definitely also do this on a modern machine! And you are right, getting some modern machines to go slow can be difficult but some of them have a slow switch you can use to make it go slower. It depends on the machine you are using how slow you can get it to go using just the foot feed. Slow is good with this type of work, especially when you are a beginner.

    @alibabafurball 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Very inspiring. I noticed you don't use a stabilizing sheet of any sort for this. This is the video I was waiting for, thank you ever so much. So many questions about the process you have answered in your videos. I was confused for a bit on what stabilizers to use when and how and for what situation. The work on the lace and how you built it up to match the border I would have missed. The way you constructed the lace in the video helped me with the technique a lot. Anchoring it on the border then keeping the tension as you straight stitched across to the other anchor point, building the line up, and then binding it together the length. I do have a question though, did you use the same needle as the stitching you did with the flowers? My thought with what I was doing is I am using a thick weave cloth in a hoop with machine embroidery thread with regular black bobbin thread and a Scmhetz embroidery needle 90/14. Would I have to change my needle to sew through thin air for any tension issues or adjust for the lack of tension from the thread passing through the fabric as compared to sewing through air and the switch to the embroidery thread in the bobbin? Did you have to adjust the tension on the way you have yours set up for flowers to the lace?

    • @MarilynLeefabricthreadartist
      @MarilynLeefabricthreadartist  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +alibabafurball No you don't have to change to a different needle and your tensions should remain the same....no change there either! That makes life a little simpler for sure! I do not use any stabilizing sheet at all for any of my embroidery. If you keep your fabric extremely taut you will not have any puckering or trouble at all! I am happy that you are learning this wonderful art!

  • @gabbyg561
    @gabbyg561 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Absolutely Beautiful!.. It is a work of art. Is this the same as what is called open cut work, or is that a different technique. I can see how a skilled seamstress then, was worth her salt!..lol She could support herself and her Children, if need be, all with a treadle sewing machine. How long does it take to get accustomed to working the treadle? Your work is absolutely stunning, and thank you for sharing it on TH-cam.

    • @MarilynLeefabricthreadartist
      @MarilynLeefabricthreadartist  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +gabbyg561 ...Thank you! I am not sure if this is called open cut work....it may be...I haven't been doing it long enough to know all of the technical terms for it! I did not learn this from someone else...I was just experimenting but I am sure many do it this way. It takes a bit to get used to the treadle....mostly just getting the rhythm down right....but with persistence you finally get it right and then you don't forget(kind of like riding a bike!) I absolutely love using my treadle! It is so dependable and I have complete control of the speed and etc.....

    • @gabbyg561
      @gabbyg561 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Marilyn Lee
      When I was telling my hubby about your video, and that you did a doily on a treadle, he said it is probably a lot easier to control the speed, than the modern machines. I agree, I think it would be easier, because the foot pedals are not as easy to control speed with.
      My Grandma had a machine that had the knee lever to run the machine, and it was so much nicer and easier to control the speed.
      You haven't been doing this very long?.. Wow, this gives me hope. LOL

    • @MarilynLeefabricthreadartist
      @MarilynLeefabricthreadartist  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +gabbyg561 ......Yes it is much easier on a treadle because you can control the speed so easily. A knee lever is also nice. I have a machine that we just modified(Singer Industrial, straight stitch and zig-zag) so that I can change the width of the zig-zag as I am sewing with a knee lever.This is going to be wonderful as I can go from narrow to wide(and back again) zig-zag very smoothly. I haven't had much time to play with it yet but I think it will be great for embroidery and monograms! I have only been doing embroidery on the treadle for a bout a year and a half..........

    I FELL IN LOVE WITH WHAT YOU DO. questions, what type of paper do you put the pattern on under neath the water soluble stabilizer? what type of pen do you use to trace the pattern onto the stabilizer that won't stain after it's done. I want to do the word UFFDA and then wash away the stabilizer. It is for a very very special thing I am making my grand daughter. Yes this question is about this video and the other one you did with water soluble stabilizer. HELP HELP HELP

    I feel like my treadle machine goes too fast no matter how slow I press down on the pedal. And the thread keeps getting stuck on the bottom. It runs smoothly when i I just do straight stitch though

      Just try to slow down a bit.......walk instead of run! LOL! Be sure your tensions are set right if you plan on doing embroidery and also your fabric has to be extremely tight in the hoop.

    Absolutely stunning creatively, I was in awe while watching the video, however Mam just a small question, when you started drawing lines for lace, what when underneath the thread? the cream/beige material.

    I’m curious as to what is underneath the lace piece you are creating. If it is a slick “Teflon” type material, why is the bobbin thread not attaching itself?

    • @MarilynLeefabricthreadartist
      @MarilynLeefabricthreadartist  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is a slick template plastic. It helps the hooped fabric glide smoothly.. I am not quite sure what you mean by your words " why is the bobbin thread not attaching itself?" Attaching to what? I have a small hole in the template where the bobbin thread can be pulled up and through.

      @@MarilynLeefabricthreadartist in viewing I couldn’t see where the hole was for the needle and bobbin thread to pass through. Your crafting art is mesmerizing and I couldn’t figure out how? I’ve done free motion quilting but never with a “Teflon” type sheet for ease of movement. I do have a grid for achieving straight lines but there is a hole where the feed dogs go and I thought I should be able to see a hole for the needle to penetrate the sheet. I need to try this and it will probably be clearer. Thank you for answering.

    • @MarilynLeefabricthreadartist

      @@sandrabranstiter8247 I cut a tiny hole in the plastic template sheet for the needle to go through and the bobbin thread to come up through. I tape the template sheet in place so it doesn't move. I remove the feed dogs altogether as they can hamper smooth thread flow as the thread, both top and bottom, has a habit on catching on the feed dogs in this sort of embroidery.

    Hi Marilyn! I have a question....I was wondering if you know what kind of filler thread or cord is generally used in creating the Richelieu cut work I see being done on the treadle or vintage machines? I have spent many hours looking for this info everywhere and can't find an answer. Thank you so much for making and sharing your videos. I've learned so much from watching them, especially your thread painting and lace making videos! It motivated me to get a treadle machine and begin teaching myself. Your work is absolutely gorgeous!
