I'm not a cyclist but I volunteer for the Fred - it was 27°c over here on the west coast - I think it was a very sensible decision considering the amount of sleep you had - and yes the Fred will always be there but if you had a serious accident you might not be - thank you for sharing your honesty and reasoning why you didn't do it - and the best is the time you gave to your wife - happy wife happy life lol
You did the right thing , btw , if you're ever up my way again (I live in Lancs) take the bike a little east to the Trough of Bowland , you will not be dissapointed Tom, between the challanging climbs to get in and the oasis within the valley its magic.
