    Luka, a balk is essentially when a pitcher makes an illegal motion in an attempt to deceive the batter or baserunners. Once the pitcher has decided whether he will throw towards home plate or to the base to pick off the runner, he must make one single action in either direction. He cannot fake to home then try to pick off the guy on first base, or vice versa. That rule gets INSANELY complicated, but essentially means if the pitcher tries to throw a fakeout, the runner is automatically awarded the next base.

    the triple play at 16:00 happens because there are runners on 1st and 2nd base, with no out. So the guy makes the catch, thats the first out, then he steps on the base to get the guy on 2nd base out, and makes the tag to get the guy that ran from first base out. Thats the 3 outs. The runners on base were all running and if you catch the ball before it drops you have to go back, so the runners were already on the next base.

    This is why baseball is still popular - it is all risk, nothing is EVER safe.
    Unassisted triple play - catch the ball right off the bat (batter is out), step on the nearest base (runners have to return to their base on a fly out - runner forced out at base), tag the runner trying to come into the base you just tagged (runner is tagged out). 2:00 a little bit of context behind this play: It was game three of the 2013 world series that was tied 1-1. The winning run was actually tagged out at home, but the umps said the third baseman obstructed the runner by lifting his legs and tripping him. So they allowed it to be safe and the cardinals won. In the end, the call didn't matter because the red sox won the next three in a row to become world series champs.

    There are a 13 illegal moves a pitcher can do that constitute a balk. When a balk is called, all the runners on base are awarded one base. The illegal moves are as follows:
    1. If a pitcher starts into his windup then stops.
    2. If the pitcher makes a pick-off attempt with one or more foot on the rubber. (The rubber is the white rectangular thing where the pitchers stands to pitch)
    3. If the ball slips out of the pitcher's hand while he's on the rubber.
    4. If the pitcher touches his mouth while on the rubber.
    5. If the pitcher throws a pitch with a fielder in foul ground
    6. If the pitcher makes a pitch with both feet on the rubber.
    7. If the pitcher attempts to make a pitch while off the rubber.
    8. If the pitcher throws at the fielder and not the base during a pick-off attempt
    9. If the pitcher fakes a throw to third then throws to first.
    10. If the pitcher takes too long to make a pitch
    11. Faking a pick-off attempt then throwing a pitch.
    12. The pitcher stumbles while delivering the ball.
    13. The pitcher attempts to make a fielding play while on the rubber when the ball is in play.

      A balk, pronounced as bock, is an illegal interruption in the pitchers delivery or an illegal movement on the mound to decieve the hitter. That would include falling down, stepping with the wrong foot, an illegal pickoff, interrupting forward movement when pitching the ball, twitching, or starting and then stopping your delivery of the ball.

  • @classicalcanadian7973
    @classicalcanadian7973 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    In the case of the unassisted triple play, he got the first out by catching the ball, the second out by stepping on second base (which was occupied and who's runner was in between second and third), and the third by tagging the runner from first who had run from first to second during the pitchers delivery of the ball home. This only happened because the offensive (batting) teams manager had called for a play called a hit and run, which means as soon as the pitcher starts his delivery the guy on base starts stealing and the batter tries his utmost to hit that ball to a gap or at least on the ground. The logic behind this is to give your runner a head start and (ironically) not ground into double plays in the infield/squeeze out an extra base on an occasion you would usually only be able to advance by one. The reason this led to a triple play is that the second baseman ran to the base to be there in case the batter missed and the catcher had a chance to throw out the runner stealing. Because he was there he was able to catch a line drive right up the middle. The hit and run forces the infielder who is in charge of covering second in the case of a steal (second baseman or shortstop, depending on if its a right or left-handed batter) to move and spots where the ball would usually be fielded cleanly for an out vs. where they get through as hits are reversed. That's why you see what would usually be a perfect hit (line-drive up the middle) cost their team the game when seconds prior they had no outs and runners in scoring position.

    Yeah, when gearing up to pitch, the pitcher has to either:
    Decide to pitch to home plate
    Or
    Decide to throw to a base that a runner is attempting to steal
    If he starts to do one, but then changes to do the other, it’s called a balk. The rule is in place to prevent pitchers from trying to fake out runners and batters, which wouldn’t be fair, as the runners and batter would have no way of knowing what the pitcher is about to do. The ball is pronounced dead and all runners advance one base. If there is a runner on third base, he takes home and scores a run. That’s how a few of these balks led to winning the game.

  • @hughsonj
    @hughsonj 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    When a batter hits the ball and it is caught in midair, any runners on base have to return to the last safe base they held. This is called "tagging up". If the fielder can throw the ball to the base before the runner tags up then the runner is out. Unassisted triple plays happen when there are runners on first and second base and then the second baseman or shortstop catches a line drive. From there the fielder touches second base before the lead runner can return and then he tags the other runner coming from first base.

  • @Alex-kd5xc
    @Alex-kd5xc 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Balks aren't always on purpose. In fact, i think they're almost always on accident. Basically, there's certain rules that pitchers can't make certain movements once they come "set" and are ready to make the pitch. Tripping, twitching, or other movements that aren't exactly intentional are balks once the pitcher is set. Sometimes, the pitcher does make certain movements that are intended to fool a baserunner but more often than not it's just a mistake by a pitcher.

    I'll try to explain the triple play but it's confusing. The first out was because the ball was caught so the batter was out. If a runner wants to advance a base when a ball is caught you can't start running until the ball is caught. The runner that was on second had started running before it was caught since he thought it would be a hit, so the fielder who caught the ball just had to tag the base he started from to get him out. Then he just tagged the runner from first base trying to go to second. One guy made all 3 outs.

    There have only been 15 unassisted triple plays in the history of baseball (where one player makes all 3 outs). It has only happened twice to end the game. The one here in 2009 and once in 1927. To put that in context, there have been over 200,000 games of MLB baseball played since the league formed.

  • @aspieatheist6040
    @aspieatheist6040 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    A triple play is when the defense gets three batters out at the same time. When this happens, obviously, that's three outs and the inning is over. An unassisted triple play is a fielder turns a triple play unassisted, as the name implies. If you'll look, the fielder caught the ball, meaning that the batter runner is automatically out. When the ball was hit, the runner at second immediately broke for third, but when the ball was caught, the runner was obliged to run back to second. The fielder tagged the bag before he was able to do that, meaning that that runner was out. Then he tagged the runner who was running to second from first, and that was three outs. Inning over.
    An unassisted triple play is a very rare thing. It's happened less than 25 times in the 149-year history of the game. It's only happened once in the World Series. (1920, Bill Wambagass.)

    Triple plays very rare. Unassisted triple plays are even more rare. If the baserunner has another runner behind him, most often the batter who just put the ball in play, has no choice but to attempt to advance to the next base. That's how double plays are made. It's a force out at 2nd and the throw to 1st beats the batter who put it in play. If a baserunner is not forced to the base he is attempting to take then he must be tagged with the ball or glove with the ball in the glove. Most double plays involves 2 or 3 defensive players. Sometimes just 1 if it's a linedrive out and the runner gets tagged while off base. You better be careful while on base but you can't just always keep a foot on base if you wanna advance bases and score. Runners can steal bases as soon as the pitcher has committed to throw his pitch, then it's the catchers job to get the runner trying to steal. If pitchers were allowed to fake the pitch no runner would lead off the base or attempt to steal and hardly nobody would score and baseball would be more boring than soccer and hockey. Baseball is like chess in that so much strategy is involved in every pitch and play. Then it gets explosive when you least expect it. One player can win it or lose it so quickly. Routine ground balls get past the infielder or they go under his glove between his legs and its game over. The difference between a pop up and a homerun is less than half an inch. Batters have less than 1 second to decide to swing, then they gotta hit the ball. That's why hitting a MLB pitcher is the hardest thing to do in all these sports. It's a game of failure because if you succeed 28% of the time you're considered good. 280 average. If you succeed 32% for a 320 average you're considered great and will get into the hall of fame. That's only about 35 more hits per season if both players have 500 at bats. So all that being said, unassisted triple plays when 1 player makes all 3 outs off 1 hit ball is the absolute most rare thing in the sport. The greatest sport.

    A "balk" is when a pitcher is off the plate on the pitchers' mound, when he's about to throw his pitch. Runner(s) advance to the next base. No matter which base their on, or outs there are.
    I can't remember the rest of the details of balking, and how it's labeled as a "balk".
    Example: bases are loaded, 2 out, bottom of the 9th, home team is losing 6-5. Balk is called, and runners will advance, and game will be tied. Runners will be on 2nd, and 3rd base.

    Triple play, got a guy on first and second. Baserunners are off their bags at this point stealing (important) they would have had to have their feet on the bases when he caught that ball or get back to base before he tags them out. So he catches the ball to nic the batter, touches the bag to force out the runner stealing third, and tags out the runner stealing second. He could have also thrown the ball back to first, but that would involve another man on defense, making this way the unassisted triple play. Which, bar a couple of other similar instances, could only happen in this fashion

    16:40 he got an unassisted triple play because he caught the ball, which meant the batter was out, he then touched second which got that runner out, and then he tagged the runner coming from first base, which got him out as well. Typically a triple play, which is very rare itself, is executed with multiple players on one team, but he did it unassisted (i.e all by himself), which is probably the rarest play in baseball. There have only been 15 in the 100+ year history of MLB, and his was to win the game, which including this instance, has only happened twice.

      Just to clarify - if a ball is caught in the air for an out, the baserunner has to be back on their original base - if someone with the ball touches the base before they return to it, they are out. So, linedrive gets the batter out. There was a runner you hardly see in the clip on second who took off for third. So, the fielder stepped forward and stepped on second base, making the runner on second out. And the runner on first ran way too far and didn't stop quickly, so he was only a couple steps away and got tagged out between bases for the third out (the fielder could have tossed the ball to the first baseman, who tags first base, to get him out as well, but that would have made it an assisted triple play).

    16:15 So what happened there was the second basemen caught the ball, which got the batter out, stepped on second which got the player going from second to third out because the runner didn't tag up, and then finally tagged the player running from first to second to get all three outs. This is something that NEVER happens and the fact that a game ended with it is crazy. Triple players are hard to come by, but I'm pretty sure you can count the number of unassisted triple plays on one hand

    At 8:09, that's known as a balk. It's basically when the pitcher illegally stops his motion, after which every runner on base gets to advance to the next base. In this situation, because there was a runner on 3rd base, he got to go home and score the winning run. Also, at 13:07, the Marlins pitcher had a no-hitter through 9 innings, but it wasn't official because the Marlins hadn't scored a run. They scored in the bottom of the 9th to win and therefore make the no-hitter official. So they didn't lose it, they just had to do more to preserve it. One more thing, on the unassisted triple play, he caught the ball in the air for the first out, touched 2nd base for the second out (the runner on 2nd was forced to go back after the catch and didn't make it back in time), and tagged the runner from 1st for the third out.

      It's amazing what baseball can do when you don't expect it. My luck was unreal. In my first 4 games, I saw:
      A balk...in the BOTTOM OF THE 9th WITH THE TYING RUN AT 3RD(!!)- my Yanks won the game in extra innings on a walkoff double
      Derek Jeter hit an inside-the-park home run
      and the Yanks put up 20 on the Red Sox at Fenway.
      but...
      It took me almost twelve years and probably 40-50 games to see a grand slam (Greg Bird in September 2018)- but I saw about six of them last year alone. Pretty much every game I went to had one!
      Most recently, my first walkoff homer came in early September last year (leMahieu vs Oakland). It took 13 years to see it (my first game was in 2006).

    • @Alex-kd5xc
      @Alex-kd5xc 4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      To further explain just in case Luka reads:
      The guy basically threw a no-hitter, since he pitched 9 innings without allowing a hit, which SHOULD result in a no hitter. However, the game was tied 0-0 meaning the game wasn't over, and you can't have a no hitter without the game ending. So, the pitcher's offense was able to score 1 run in the final half of the inning which ended the game and solidified his performance as a no-hitter. If the offense doesn't score a run, the game continues and the pitcher likely would've been taken out (because nobody ever pitches more than 9 innings in a game) and he technically wouldn't have gotten the no-hitter even though he pitched 9 no-hit innings.

On the hard hit, the guy on 2nd goes without tagging as he thinks it will get through.
