El Cid would had been a really memorable and spectacular movie, bagging a number of Oscars....if it had been directed by William Wyler. Wyler pours the intensity and originality of emotional expression in the screenplay as well script. The academic use of deep focus of emotional expression is not as overwhelming as in Ben Hur.
The only disappointment was that the ending was not based on facts. El Cid did not die in battle in Valencia. He lived to be an old man, saw his two daughters marry Spanish noblemen and he also had a son. I don't know who thought that the ending chosen would have been more pleasing to the audience. But the music..fabulous.
Anthony Mann was as interested in lyricism as in epicnesss, El Cantar de Mio Cid is an epic poem from the 11th century... Mann conveyed all of that in a masterful way. He's one of the greatest directors of classic filmmaking, I don't see why on earth Wyler should've done this movie instead of Mann. It's not like Ben-Hur, it has nothing to do with Ben-Hur
A historical movie is a reflection of historical facts. It should not be based on a poem but on facts. Anthony Mann had to make the audience enthrall with a sensational ending, may it not hold true to history.
He is my favorite actor of all time, blessings to Charlton Heston

The greatest of all time “ Heston “
What a fun interview!
El Cid is my favourite Charton Heston movie.
NO.
Met him at a book signing here in dublin in the late 90s. Gentleman .
Heston pressence is huge, even for his age in this interview,
Yeah his weight does go up and down
Good manners and grace 🥰
Sebastián Rulli se parece al Gran Actor Charlton Heston.
This has to be around 1993 or so and the cameo he mentions must be "Tombstone"
When was this? I assume early to mid 90s?

Although, I cannot fully agree with your point of view, but I appreciate and respect the way you put your thoughts into words.
