Easier way than growing slips: All you have to do is buy some sweet potatoes and let them sit at a warm room temperature for a month or two until they start to sprout. Then you can cut the potato in half or thirds, making sure there's at least one sprout per potato, or plant the whole potato. I got a HUGE harvest this past fall from about 20 tubers doing it this way.

I l🥰ve Maryland. I lived in the tiny Town of Crisfield many years ago & was deeply impressed how their Spring starts in February💮🌸💐🦠🌷🌼🌻🌺🌹🏵️Which is typically the time of year that New England gets the worst of the snow ❄️freezing rain🌧️ 💧⛄☃️& ice. 🌨️🌀
Great video Gary I see what your talking about I tried growing sweet potatoes in a container I ended up with about three or four medium-sized sweet potatoes
I'm telling you I brought one potato made sure I got the one where it had good roots on the end I cut it in half planted water and about a month later as I'm watering I notice potatos starting to stick thru the dirt and I find three full fat potatos y'all should try it... I'm a farmer now 😂😂
I do that too. I don't use "slips", as it takes too long. Growing year round with grow lights in my apartment. Growing squash, zucchini, garlic, beets, jalapenos, bell peppers...all in my apartment.

Thank you very much for the information! I recently forgot about some sweet potatoes I had under the counter, and they started growing some (weirdly pretty) pink and yellow shoots, and quite large ones at that. So I decided I would pretend like I did that on purpose and learn how to grow them. Found your video and I've got my first greenery on one of the potatoes! Can't wait to see how it turns out. I've never grown any food before so it'll be great if I get results out of this. Thanks again for the help!

Stumbled onto your video looking up sweet potatoes. Do you think I could plant 1 slip in a 5 gal bucket or do I need deeper containers. I have at least 25 5 gal buckets I was hoping to use. My slips are only about an inch high so I'm getting things ready... so excited...never grew anything but houseplants, but this year I'm trying real food!
I just found your very helpful and informative video, Gary. I am growing sweet potatoes in a 20 gal black grow bag. The multiple vines have reached about 10 feet long and are taking over my patio. They covered and killed my lettuce by rooting themselves in the lettuce's containers. My sister told me to use the leaves in omelets, salads, and soups, but there are far too many. I would like to know if I can cut off some of these vines and plant them in my field, which is finally ready for sowing??? I am in FL 9b, and our first hard freeze will be Christmas day. Thanks for any advice you choose to share. I truly love your channel!

Hi, I have some left over sweet potatoes left over from Thanksgiving, they have started to sprout shoots all on their own, today is Dec. 22, 2018, will I be able to root the shoots and plant them at this time of year? I live in Southern New Mexico. Thank you so much for your video, before I watched your video I was thinking that I would plant the S.P. just like potatoes, placing the whole S.P. in the ground. So glad I found your channel, I am an amateur Gardener, I am growing veggies in pots and celery on the ground, my potatoes are doing well, though we have had some frost, I cover them at night with hay and a netting cover over to protect the tender plants.

My favorite thing about sweet potatoes is that the greens are also edible. You can trim the young shoots off the vine and that will cause the sweet potato vine to grow more greens. Use them like spinach.

Wow! Fertilizer every 2 weeks! Question: How do you protect them from Aphids? I put my 2 buckets of sweet potatoes outside ( l also grow indoors in the winter as l have grow lights) last November as we had 3 days in a row of 65 degree weather which is unheard of in this area. What l didn't count on was the plants being attacked by Aphids. They basically decimated the plants before l found out what was going on. I still have 1 little plant left. I honestly don't know how it survived but Diatromatrious Earth was a HUGE game changer & really helped. I heard that the more fertilizer you use, the more the plant attracts Aphids but yours look like they're very strong & healthy. Very nice👍

Hello sir. Lots of them. You know the end of the vine are good to eat also boiled. In some asian countries they eat the end of vines bolied. Dip in soya sauce with lemon. Try it they are healthy

Nice video. I just planted some sweet potatoes this year, but I didn’t use any fertilizer or nothing. Just been watering them is all. I haven’t dig them up yet, so not sure if it’s producing anything. What type of fertilizer and other stuff I should be putting on it? Thanks
I used fish emulsion over the season every once and a while. They take a good long time to produce. If we could get 3,000 people to donate $5, that would be perfect.... Thanks! Thanks for the info on starting/planting. I’ve read where sweet potatoes have to be treated some way after harvesting. I can’t remember if it’s drying or what. Is there anything that you do?

I have a question since I'm planning ahead. When I'll be harvesting, I'll be plucking out the potatoes. If I leave or put back the vines in the soil, would they grow other potatoes again if the temperatures are optimal or would I have to discard the grown shoots and start over?
All my containers do get drainage holes. Add the trellis anytime. Worm compost is great. Please visit my seed shop www.therustedgarden.com for Neem Oil, Peppermint & Rosemary Oil for pest and disease management. Calcium Nitrate for Blossom End Rot and for Seeds and Seed Starting Supplies. Thanks so much!
Now for doing these with the slips. How did these originally start? I haven't been able to find that video of yours. Do you start them off with soil at the very bottom of the container and then as it grows, do you continue to add dirt and mound it up until it gets to the top like with regular potatoes? Or do you fill up the container and then just put the slip with the roots right into it from the top and that's all there is to it? I almost feel like if you did the mounding you might actually have four or five of those bigger sized sweet potatoes and I'm new to this too so I'm just trying. I'm just taking a guess
Just plant the slips and walk away. Feed and water a lot. And Please Visit The Rusted Garden Vegetable Seeds & Home Garden Supplies: www.therustedgarden.com Neem Oil: bit.ly/43IJl9C Peppermint Oil: bit.ly/43IJl9C Rosemary Oil: bit.ly/43IJl9C

Great video Gary I see what your talking about I tried growing sweet potatoes in a container I ended up with about three or four medium-sized sweet potatoes
Im sure the varieties matter too. Ill have to reseach some differences.
I'd rather have 3 or 4 eating size ones than the long skinny tubers I got.
I'm telling you I brought one potato made sure I got the one where it had good roots on the end I cut it in half planted water and about a month later as I'm watering I notice potatos starting to stick thru the dirt and I find three full fat potatos y'all should try it... I'm a farmer now 😂😂

Good luck!

If it is warm, yes. grow them as vines.
Very helpful idea ilike it
Glad to help.

I love this! Thank you for the information. I'm going to give this a try this year ❤️. Just out of curiosity does anyone know if you can consume the potatoes you grow the slips out of after you collect what you want? Or do you just keep it in the water and allow it to keep growing more

My favorite thing about sweet potatoes is that the greens are also edible. You can trim the young shoots off the vine and that will cause the sweet potato vine to grow more greens. Use them like spinach.
I try to eat them all them time but just dont like them.

Very nice👍
Great video, it perfectly answered my questions. What water soluble fertilizer would you recommend with a high phosphorus and potassium percentage?
Alaska Morbloom has a 0-10-10. I see it with Fish Fertilizer 5-1-1.
slips go nicely directly into the ground :)
Thanks

Hi when sweet potatoes are ready will the potatoes always peek up from the dirt to know when their ready. Also what parts need to be cut off from vines not to sure about this thanks wish I could show what mine look like to understand what I'm doing thanks.
Did you have drain holes in your pot, or put gravel in the bottom also your soil looked dry how often did you water them?
thank u
How do you recommend trellising sweet potato vines?
Hello sir. Lots of them. You know the end of the vine are good to eat also boiled. In some asian countries they eat the end of vines bolied. Dip in soya sauce with lemon. Try it they are healthy
Thanks so much. I will try the ends.

What size containers did you use?
Thanks so much for this Gary! Do I have to use a fertilizer with an NPK or can I use worm castings? If so, how often should I use them?
Worm casting isn't enough. You'd need so much. You need a granular with NPK.

I'm brand new to this container gardening,I started 2 weeks ago but I just used a 5 gallon container and I just planted a 3 pack set of sweet potatoes 🥔 what should I do next and your video was very helpful??? (New Jersey)
Now it's really keeping up the water. When you get a good amount of growth you can start giving them water soluble fertilizer every 2 weeks.

Thanks for the info on starting/planting. I’ve read where sweet potatoes have to be treated some way after harvesting. I can’t remember if it’s drying or what. Is there anything that you do?
I dont do anything. You might have read about curing them for storage but I dont do that. I eat them too fast.

I have a question since I'm planning ahead. When I'll be harvesting, I'll be plucking out the potatoes. If I leave or put back the vines in the soil, would they grow other potatoes again if the temperatures are optimal or would I have to discard the grown shoots and start over?
Actually probably.

interesting for size
Do you drill holes in bottom of container? Can you use worm compost? When do you add the tower to container?
