Motley Fool Stock Advisor: What We've Learned After 200 Picks

  • Journey in your mind back to March 2002. The stock market was still stumbling around in the aftermath of the dot-com crash, and retail investors were running scared. It was into that environment that Tom and David Gardner launched a monthly newsletter featuring one stock pick from each brother, with detailed explanations about why they’d been chosen -- a friendly fraternal competition that became the foundation of the Stock Advisor portfolio. The returns on those investments have well outpaced the broader market gains in the ensuing 16 years. Had you acted on all of their recommendations, you’d have reaped a market-mashing 1,955% return overall.
Profit, however, isn’t the only thing the Gardners have accrued in the intervening years. They’ve also figured a few things out along the way. So, in this Rule Breaker Investing podcast, David Gardner shares, not stock picks, but interesting conclusions -- six of them -- from his 200 months selecting recommendations for Stock Advisor.

Motley fool...thank you for inspiring me to start my own TH-cam channel. You have influenced me in creating a stock related channel called Investment Mob. I even have my own website. Thank you for all your help over the years!!! Jeff

One extra step I take when picking a stock in addition to all the motley fool requirements is that I pick past winners. I wait for a stock to move 50% or 100% . If a stock is really going to gain 500 to 2000% gains then I’m not worried about 50% .
The hardest part is to continue to hold winners

      Retrogamer Dell
I wouldn’t wait a few thousand percent, sorrry about that. I would wait until I’m sure it’s a winner which is hard to do,

i'm always tempted to lock in my gains if it really rockets; I start to get nervous. Partially reducing my exposure.

Awesome tips. Particularly the part that says ' Selling the winners early is way more damaging than taking a huge loss " was eye opening for me. Thanks for your valuable insights.

So let's say we have been with Motley Fool for 5 years and they recommend 2 stocks per month. Does that mean we would have 120 stocks by the end of 5 years? I currently have 32 stocks and not sure if I should keep adding their new recommendations or if I should just stick with the 32 stocks and add to that.

Man these guys are the worst!! Straight up their recommendations suck I should’ve just shorted everything they recommended.

@@grc_whale1304 Yea I had a deal last year to have them free through my credit card. Every last damn stock from them went to shit (before the market dump due to inflation)... now they all like 70-90% down. Then before the dump they were apologizing about recommending SPAC companies. I'm never going with them again.

I don’t like being bombarded by ads that they sell additional service just about every day. It dilutes the service. I wish they would send less of it because I get confused by too many services. Plus, I cannot tell which service is best for people, ie Stock Advisor or Rule Breaker because most of the stocks purchase on either portfolio are growth stocks and they are both risky in certain ways

but why are Moody and Shwab stocks are missing from their stock advisor performance list if they suggested them in March 2002?? Does the stock advisor performance list tracks all the recommendations or omits few bad picks that they have done?

Why this channel has only 3k views or listens ? or may be podcast app is better than watching on TH-cam ?
it should be at-least 100k views or listens as people have subscribed it for a reason ?

You have to go to the "reports" or "articles" under Research on the website. It's really annoying. The website is terrible and rubbish. The stock picks are legit, but the UX is TERRIBLE. The UI is pretty bad too. The community page should work like a reddit type site and it's so stuck in the past. I would sign up and sign off and come back. If the site was user-friendly I would've made a lot more money. The first 60 days should be free because the site is so terrible. When a stock is recommended it doesn't always show how many times it has been recommded. Anyways, I got NVDA from them, it was at $270, but still, not bad.
If you know what you are doing, I would recommed the premium $1500 service. My friend, after 10 yrs with SA, he went to the premium one and got in on Etsy at the start and probably some others.
Seeking Alpha has a service called Potential Multibaggers that is hyperfocused on less than 20 stocks and that is where I have really done well. There is another Seeking Alpha one I want to try, App Economy, but I think there might be some overlap? Beth @ beth technology is amazing. She called Roku and I think her latest is Bandwidth.

I love listening to this guy. I’ve been in the market now since July of 2018. The name “Motley Fools” kept coming up everywhere as I was reading and learning about the market. I just recently found this channel and have been listening to many that videos of David and other people who work at the Motley Fools. Of course there is going to be criticism and negativity in any avenue in this world, but I really enjoy following the Motley Fools. Also David if you see this comment, I heard you say “God Bless” in the video, which was even cooler! I hope and pray you’re a Christian! Keep it up at the Motley Fools!

A real history lesson for Do it Yourself investors. Listening and learning from these chaps warms my heart. I love your passion David, and admire your courage and knowledge. Please keep up this great stuff. I'm just amazed that it's not gotten more views than this.
On a different note, reading some of the comments below, it's clear that people are getting into investment without fully absorbing the constantly repeated cautionary reminders by Motley Fool - or indeed even other TH-cam mentors. Investment requires careful thought and even more cautious advancement. People who expect to make money quickly will be disappointed - unless they are extraordinarily lucky.

I lost money with Motley Fool. I had two services the Stock Advisor and Options. I was given a very good promotion to join. I was promised to great advice through the team. In my case they recommended TCS the Container Store. This stock was around $40 dollars and it went down to $29, $25, $22, $17 then to less than $6. I wrote them several Threads for an advice when the stock was $25 and $22 asking them if I should sell and accept a loss around 35-40%, but no one replied. On the phone one representative answered that this is a Long Term Investment. Then when the stock went down to less than $6 they sent their advise to sell?? !!! This is a terrible example of their picks which I went through. They recommend many picks for very long term which is not a rocket science. Finally, I asked them to stop sending me marketing emails and also to stop renewing my both services. By the way, they never post these types of picks at all. Again TCS. Now I joined another one which I paid only once for lifetime and it is cheaper than the yearly subscription of Motley Fool. Most important I am not losing money
