    People often say the death of Gage Creed in Pet Sematary was soul crushing. IMHO the death of Lance Henriksen's son in Pumpkinhead was way more powerful in its execution of the loss of a child to tragic circumstances.

    I've always liked the movie Pumpkinhead because ,well at least the first one, because he only goes after those he's assigned to go after he, doesn't just kill for the sake of killing.

      Pumpkinhead has been like that in just about every movie though. Pumpkinhead 2: Blood Wings is somewhat of the exception since he wasn't summoned the exact same way as the first movie.

    • @grapeshot
      @grapeshot 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      @@DegenWeeb The first one will always be the best one. They went from teenagers to I believe last Pumpkinhead movie was like a cosplay of the Hatfields and McCoys.

    • @DegenWeeb
      @DegenWeeb 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@grapeshot the original is always the best, but the second and third movies really added more to the Pumpkinhead lore, which the comics also expanded on. My only complaint with Pumpkinhead: Ashes to Ashes was the bad cgi everything else was interesting. Pumpkinhead: Blood Feud wasn't the best, but it was an interesting take on Romeo & Juliet mixed with the Hatfield/McCoy feud.

    • @ometta7
      @ometta7 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's because he's more an extension of the summoner's own hatred and rage, rather than a fully autonomous entity. Pumpkinhead, at least in the first film, probably isn't even exactly sentient in the sense that you or I would understand the term.

  • @gregorygreenwood-nimmo4954

    As was once pointed out to me, a movie set up of something like 'Pumpkinhead versus the Creeper' practically writes itself. Two rural American horror legends (Pumpkinhead is more Southern Gothic as this video observes and Jeepers Creepers more Midwest Horror, but the two 'ranges' of the respective monsters could reasonably overlap at least in some measure). With the original creator of Jeepers Creepers no longer attached to the character, that issue is no longer an obstacle. The idea of a creature that kills to feed in a regular cycle initiating a sequence of events that results in everyone's favourite demon of vengeance being summoned back by revenge fuelled relatives or lovers fits with the lore of both franchises. Once law enforcement and possibly locals ignorant of what is happening start trying to halt the general carnage, things would only escalate as more and more individuals become targets for Pumpkinhead as they obstruct its goals, and the Creepers does what it does best.

    Keep away from Pumpkinhead,
    Unless you're tired of living,
    His enemies are mostly dead,
    He's mean and unforgiving,
    Laugh at him and you're undone,
    But in some dreadful fashion,
    Vengeance, he considers fun,
    And plans it with a passion,
    Time will not erase or blot,
    A plot that he has brewing,
    It's when you think that he's forgot,
    He'll conjure your undoing,
    *Bolted doors and windows barred,*
    *Guard dogs prowling in the yard,*
    *Won't protect you in your bed,*
    *Nothing will, from Pumpkinhead*

    I've only recently come to realize why I find this movie so compelling. This movie has "Show, Don't Tell" down to an art! To start, I've always found the title of the movie, and the character/monster, to be incredibly unnerving. It's such a seemingly goofy name and, in fact, has put a lot of people off from it. However, the sense that the name sounds like something a child would come up with actually brings up some horrifying implications. And that is where the pieces of this story begin to fit together.
    Originally, the monster was simply going to be called "Vengeance" and the movie's title was "Vengeance: The Demon". Pretty bland, yes? The poem by Ed Justin, a friend of one of the writers, gave inspiration for the name that would be used. It works well because it gives a folklore aspect to the monster and the setting. We see in the present day setting of the movie that Pumpkinhead is something kids tease each other with to scare them, a campfire story that makes it seem that very few people really actually believe it exists. Yet they are clearly aware of some unusual happenings in their quiet corner of the world.
    Where the real horror sets in for more is how, with absolutely zero explanation, after Ed Harley has the demon conjured, EVERYBODY holes up in their homes. Adding to it, it seems that an unnatural darkness takes over the area, though we are given the impression that the events of the movie start later in the day. Perhaps this helps to tip people off, but it's never revealed for sure and a big part of me thinks it's much better that way. Most stories would have the younger characters believe in the monster, but the adults remain skeptical. This movie quickly establishes that the adults don't just believe, but they know EXACTLY what's going on. There are routines and practices in place for when the demon is conjured and it's as routine as the precautions one takes when a bad storm blows through; just hunker down and wait for it to pass.

    When it's about a movie that showcased the in-depth lore, classic emotional roller-coaster and well cast performaces. Critics usually rate it well below.
    But if a movie is about cliche cheesy, cut-lame jokes, rush plot, vomiting CGI. They then rated it as 5 star.

    "Dig up this grave", the old lady said
    The thing we need it lies there dormant, sleeping with the dead
    You understand what you ask of me
    Not even death can set your soul free
    I cast this curse and you will find
    An evil darkness deep inside your vengeful mind
    God-damn you to hell, he could not restrain
    "He already has, son", the witch did explain
    I'm gonna take you where your body will lie
    I'm gonna take you there, my friend
    I'm gonna show you where your life will end
    I'm gonna bring you here again
    Pumpkinhead, pumpkinhead
    I'm gonna take you where your body will lie
    "I'm gonna take you there", she said
    I'm gonna show you where your life will end
    This curse I cast, you're pumpkinhead!
    Keep away from pumpkinhead unless you're tired of living
    His enemies are mostly dead, he's mean and unforgiving

    Pumpkin Head should’ve been way bigger than he is. Easily one of my favorite horror monsters, and deserves a sequel and/or resurgence.

    Great videos and explanations. Keep up the great work. What is the name of the track at the end of the video that was sourced from Epidemic Sound? I really love that track.

    Edd Harley was pumpkin head in one of the movies due to summoning him. I remember a survivor from a previous movie died in the next due to pumpkin head remembering them when summoned again.

    Not a bad directorial effort by Stan Winston. I first rented this on VHS back in the day. Loved it then, love it now.

    Fun fact: The guy at the beginning of the movie who was running from Pumpkinhead was stunt performer Dick Warlock: "Michael Myers" from Halloween II (1981).
