I bought a 2022 Maverick hybrid XL. It just recently broke 20,000 miles. Granted, that’s not a whole lot of miles, but I absolutely love that thing. I live in a small town so it can be a challenge to really get up to 40 mpg with all of the highway driving I do so I wind up putting it in sport mode so it doesn’t kill the engine randomly when I’m on the highway. It helps preserve the engine, at least, as long as conventional wisdom still applies. Anyway, 35 mpg still isn’t hard to do and, when you consider everything I get out of it, that’s $23,000 well spent.
Can't speak for others, but my Mexico-made 2019 Honda Fit (100K miles) has been the most problem-free vehicle I've ever driven (after roughly 750K miles of driving). One recall. Zero problems of any kind.
I agree! Never, ever FLUSH an automatic transmission. I always drain & fill the ATF in my vehicles @ 30K mile intervals and - if possible - replace the filter. However, the only time I replace a filter is when I buy a used car and I always drain & fill the ATF twice, just to be sure. Cheap insurance. So far, this procedure has worked for me, for the last 63 years of owning and maintaining my own cars. For manual transmissions, I also drain & fill @ 30K mile intervals. In all cases, I use premium full synthetic fluids.
I have 3 crown Vic’s that I’ve had forever now. When something breaks I simply fix it. Having 3 fleet cars make’s maintenance super easy. Plus I only paid about $6k for all 3.
Thanks for your expert comments, I was just about ready to flush the automatic transmission in my 2006 Hiundy with 130 k miles, it shifts very well, has no leeks, it looks clean and the car is in general good condition. If I flush the transmission I more than likely will ruin it. I'm a DYS guy a decent mechanic and usually can fix most anything, a hard core hot -roder from the 1960's. I know that cars nowdays are very different with all the coputer systems that now are installed in them. I know they now are more reliable and all that crap, BUT I like and know the simplicity of old engines. Thanks again for the good tips that make sense .
Actually we got highway robbed. Glasses are so insanely over priced. Plasic frames for $200? Really? Your manufacturing the cheapest possible material.. about as much thats whats in a grocery sack... and your charging me $200? Its absurd. Your glasses should cost you like $20. And that's a high mark up.
I'm of the same mindset when it comes to buying cars, motorcycles, etc. This morning I was thinking the exact same thing you mentioned when a friend at church was showing us her brand new 2024 RAV4 that her husband just traded her pristine 2020 RAV4 in on because " they got a really good deal". Maybe they did, but, geez, we bought two REALLY nice pre-owned 6 yr old Lexus SUVs this year for less than they paid for their one brand new RAV4!! Plenty of life left in them and they will serve us just as well as that huge depreciation machine she was driving.
Happy New Year, Scotty! I wish you could gather together all the mechanics like you and put a list together for us! It's impossible to trust anyone but you!
@@kaohsiung99 And we fall for it everytime, besides, as fast as Scotty throws out a ton of valuable information, I generally forget why I clicked on it anyway.

Scotty, ever seen Autoenginuity's software packages? Turns any laptop into a dealer level scan tool. Just need to purchase the manufacturer package as needed (I believe a couple manufacturers are not available). So for the tech who wants access to everything for their car, and couldn't give a crap about the rest, this is a great option. Or, they have bundles for the professional who wants it all in 1. That way, you're not buying another bulky piece of hardware. Just a cable or BT connector, your personal laptop, and away you go!

One of the main reasons most die hard car collectors purchase and maintain older and antique cars is to not only enjoy driving them, but to preserve a little slice of history. If no one cared about preserving history all of these old cars would be gone. Cars from the 1920's and earlier had a lot of hand made components and the craftsmanship is amazing. My antique cars a like time machines for me. Driving one takes me back to the time when these cars were driven daily and to a time when you actually had to pay attention and 'drive' your car, not just point it in a direction and let the car do all the work. I am merely this generation's caretaker and when my time is up on this planet, I hope to find someone to pass these rolling works of art onto someone that will appreciate them as much as I do.
I just flushed 2 transmissions after 140,000 & 180,000 miles. They both work fine, they weren’t GM though 😂. They were Toyota’s 😂😂 96 Camry and 05 matrix
Greetings Scotty, I bought what I think could be a collectors car and want your opinion. It is a 2006 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon edition, auto trans, with 85,000 miles. Has lived its life in Arizona with no rust. It has stock suspension and wheels, not lifted. All white with a aftermarket white hard top. It is the last year of the TJ or LJ body style and has the 4.0 inline 6 engine. Have a great 2024!
yep same here. i live on zero year to year. just under pants and socks every 5 years or so. no mortgage. no loans. 200k saved. i'm cheap with myself but not my 2 sons or wife. in fact i would say half my salary goes to my 2 sons nowadays helping them. sooner them have some cash now while i'm still alive aye?
Flushed the transmission on my VERY RELIABLE 2012 CAMRY in August 2023 …. Then…. 6 weeks later … my transmission basically died. The mechanic asked me if I did anything to the transmission I told him I had it flushed at Valvoline He said : After 100,000 miles … if you haven’t done it regularly, then it’s best to not do it at all What Scotty is saying is 100% correct
Also I believe that a transmission flush could be used as a last resort if you had a car on its last leg (something 20+ years old and over 200,000 miles) and you needed to have an extension in terms of the life of it. At least that could buy you time in that scenario before moving on from it
Ironic. I just quoted the never flush a transmission to a friend yesterday giving proper credit to Scotty. Thanks for all the advice past few decades. Happy New Year
I have a 2023 Maverick XLT hybrid and have been pretty happy with it. It's a "mild" hybrid so the electric drive is weak. Top speed in electric drive is about 60 MPH on level ground, and you need the ICE to keep up with normal traffic after a green light. The MPG is poor (30) for the first short trip after a cold soak because the engine needs to warm up. However, after that, it does WAY better. My average over 4K miles is about 45 MPG true (truck claims 47) but folks in cold climates or with a lead foot get way less (~37). Under ideal conditions (1) mild weather with no heat/AC), (2) level ground, and (3) heavy freeway traffic at 30-40 MPH, I easily get 60+ MPG. So far, I have not had a problem to speak of. However, all the new cars have too much technology and Ford does not enable owners to learn much, so maintenance and repairs are more involved than ever before. Example: I have not yet figured out how to idle the engine for a leak check after an oil change although I'm pretty sure there is a secret, arcane procedure to do just this. LOL Yes, I miss the simplicity of older cars from the 80's, but I really love getting 600 miles out of a fill-up.
Hey Scotty. I have a 2023 Maverick Hybrid with 13,000 miles on it. I started to see a deep sleep indication on my Ford Pass app. The dealer claims they did a software update while I had it in for a recall on an emissions update. Within a week, I had a warning about the high voltage system to service soon. I went about my business and went to leave, and the car would not turn on, and it locked itself out in park. I had it towed to the dealer where they kept it for a week to get it to reoccur because the fault cleared on its own while trying to diagnose it. They finally returned it before Christmas and told me to bring it back in immediately if the fault returns. I took it back yesterday because it kept going into deep sleep mode and finally couldn't maintain enough charge without going into deep sleep almost as soon as I quit driving it. Driving typically is the remedy to restore it to the proper voltage of the 12 volt system. The Fords go into deep sleep when the voltage drops below 9 volts. None of the interior or dash lights work, and the remote features on the app are disabled to conserv 12 volt battery power. I guess I'll hear something next week hopefully. This is very frustrating for a new vehicle. I'm hoping these little trucks work out because I absolutely love it and think Ford is on to a good thing, and it would bode well for them if it's a success. By the way, this is my first ever Ford. Any thoughts?
My good friend has a 2023 Maverick hybrid. He loved it at first but now the starting battery keeps dieing. It's in the shop all the time and he is on the 3rd starting battery. He is looking at the lemon law now...
@@NoFishNicksAdventures Thanks, good to know I'm not the only one. I was assigned a Ford case worker when the high voltage system fault occurred. Her name is Monica. She mentioned Fords buy back plan. Otherwise known as the lemon laws.
Got a 2022 Ford Maverick Hybrid with 14k on it last July. Averaging 40 mpg and I have to say, this “baby truck” has been a DREAM! I’ve got 17k on it now it has been great!
Me too Scotty. I got into cars wanting to go fast by using depreciation to my advantage. While used BMWs are good HP/$ the only way to drive them inexpensively is to rebuild them yourself when they break down. My daily driver is a Ram 1500 that I can use to tow my Bimmers home on the hauler whenever I break down driving them on the weekend lol.
Your vids are great and I've learned a lot watching them over the years. Your rant about EVs is 100% spot on, however these technologies need to start somewhere and trying to kill them in their infancy is not the way to see them through their growing pains to efficiency. Even now sodium ion batteries are in development that will make the waste of lithium ion battery manufacturing a thing of the past, but without the infrastructure created by the lithium battery industry, sodium ion batteries would never see the light of day. Almost all new tech is inefficient, but it's also almost always the first step to efficiency.
Goshh! Happy new year to all! I'm going to try to take care of my 2010 civic next year. Whatever you have, listen to Scotty, and do whatever he says. And ya, I should change the oil again. But doing it myself, I know it's being done correctly.
2022 Ford Maverick XLT LUX Hybrid. 35000 miles, solid chassis, quiet and well laid out interior, original tires with good tread, 39 mpg Interstate use and 52 mpg around town (easily beat EPA rating). Infotainment system is okay but screen is crap. Paint and windshield suffer from nicks. Overall, very good. TIME WILL TELL! Great vehicle for older driver and home owner. (2.0 Turbo, 4wd, 4K tow if I were young driver). NOTE: Had a 2020 Hybrid RAV4 XSE that was crap! Hood wobbled, mirrors wobbled, rear end could not be aligned, gas tank had to be replaced, etc. Liking the Maverick much better!!
Just because its made in Mexico doesn't make it bad. Its the vehicles with a crappy design and cheaply made parts that are the issue. Tacoma's are made in Mexico and I'm happy with mine.
“It’s the vehicles with a crappy design and cheaply made parts that are the issue“.. you mean like vehicles made from GM, Ford and Stellantis ? These are CRAP!! Sad to say. 😢
Hey Scotty, Im looking into buying my first car and i found a 1992 Honda Accord. It got lowered and painted about 6 sears ago. It got arround 360,000 km on it but else its looking fine. Its 1250 € which is all the money i got. I guess for the money it wont be a bad deal but i cant afford any repares. Should i buy it?
If they're serious about "green" then they need to start by getting all the non-commercial boats and yachts and mega yachts out of the oceans and lakes (Great lakes) THEY USE A TON OF FUEL.
Nobody can honestly say how good a vehicle is if it is only a year old, 2years old, or 3 years old. If a vehicle makes it to 8 years old without any major issues, then that is a good vehicle. No vehicle that has major issues within the first 8 years of use is either junk or has been abused.
I would take a car made in Mexico over US any day have you seen the workers in production in United states. I actually own a car built in mexico. 2001 jetta 2.0 manual no issues has over 200k miles. I only did maintenance and a coolant temp sensor. And thermostat i only say this because people always look down on cars made in Mexico but i know how hard Mexicans work.
Hard work doesn't always mean good work...my mom is Mexican and hired a Mexican handyman and he installed a roof vent with glue. I had to reinstall it for her correctly with screws.
@@djjukeboxhero6491 Quite so. My Mexican Dodge is great. I like the thing. Good stuff. It has almost 250 thousand miles and I, of course, had to do stuff to it. Wheel bearings, timing chain, water pump, some transmission solenoid stuff, and a new ECM (100% MY fault).
A friend of mine owns a 2002 Silverado that he bought new. It now has 375,000 miles on the original engine & transmission. He burns one quart of oil every 3,000 miles. The back part around the rear wheels rusted badly, so he bought a new bed and then had the whole truck repainted last year. It looks almost new! I used to have a 2004 Silverado that had 140,000 miles when I sold it in 2017. She sttill ran strong. The old 5.3L V8 engines were fantastic. The new ones have more horsepower, but the cylinder deactivation feature can be problematic. If I had to buy a new truck, it would be a Toyota Tacoma or a Ford Ranger.
On electric cars, pollution will get slightly better, but every industry has to reduce pollution a little to create an overall great improvement. The real electric problem is the added weight on roadways
Nobody talks about the lack of infrastructure as well as the charging times. Electric vehicles in my opinion are only good enough to do short distances, and until the infrastructure is in place that’s all they’ll ever be good for.
It's laughably bad to anyone who uses their brain in looking at EVs. Up here in Canada, total road distance covered by paved roads vs. total population vs. number of stations vs. range available per EV is a god damned unsolvable problem. Will never be either. Weight for EVs is 30-50% higher than ICE cars, and thaw/freeze cycles up here with that weight will just make potholes more 'fun' to avoid. Time for folks to wake up, and yeah I know I'm preaching to the choir here... if we let this happen, driving will become a chore and only the rich will be able to afford owning an EV long term.
@@jacquesc3166 I remember watching a video somewhere on here and for the US if they wanted to have the efficient infrastructure in place, the total costs of having enough charging stations to hold enough electric cars alongside charging times being reasonable would have been around $700 billion.
I don't like wasting money either Scotty. You and I are two peas in a pod. I have a Triumph chopper that I bought It's a 1971 and I only paid $3,000 for it. All it needs is a tune-up, cuz it doesn't want to run.
Scotty I have a 98 dodge 1500 van, 5.2 v8 automatic. It has over 200k on it. Should i drain the trans fluid and change filter and put new fluid in it? I had the fluid changed once a very long time ago. Seems to be ok at this time.
Saving money is fun. Using the savings for something worthwhile, a nice dinner a museum, a nice little vacation, an addition to the house, etc. That's double the fun.
I like the way you think Scotty, we agree on a lot of life philosophy. Money is only a means to an end once you get old, and the "end" gets closer every day.
It's useful to compare worldwide polution with local polution. The Los Angeles basin, surrounded by mountains, benefits significantly from replacing the internal combustion engine with a quieter electric alternative, although some New York transplants miss the noise.
My cheap master mechanic at muffler man told me never ever use anything, but a Japanese alternator in a Honda never use aftermarket crap from the parts stores. I thought I had a bad alternator in my 2016 Accord but my mechanic said my battery is bad I guess it was it was four years old
I don't get having extra cars. I inherited a car but hardly drove it, and had to pay insurance to cover it... And it just sat in the driveway and slowly deteriorated. Finally sold it to a guy who fixed it up and gave it to his daughter for a first car, much to her dismay. It beats walking!
Scotty, I have 2003 S10, 4cylinder 2wheel drive, 2 door, maunual 5 speed, I bought it with 17000, has 145.000, Good truck, why don’t they made trucks like that anymore, I don’t want big 4 door truck, they are not for me, I’ll drive this one till I can’t fix it, or should I say mechanic can’t fix it, keep on keeping on….
Well Scotty I will disagree - Hyundai Elantra 2001 GLS (I believe it is License build ZF transmission), flashed at 124K because was jerking on low RPM. After flash switched the gears like a new when I rid of the vehicle at 166K+, due to the rust (rebuild vehicle). 2001 Elantra was the best Tranny filter on the top of the engine like a oil filter but on the top of the engine. Change it less than 1 minute (extraordinary DIY friendly)....
If they had real good solar panels and put them on the roof , the hood, and the trunk deck lid of the car, most of the time you are parked in the parking lot at work or the store or your driveway, there would be a certain distance that care would be good for without even plugging it in. Of course there is cloudy rainy days. Note: it should charge while you are driving. Tiny Propane powered generator in the trunk. These two concepts could get you a hundred mile range, good little runabout car.
Hey Scotty, Fun little story for you. I don't know what you're thoughts are on Dodge, but I just retired my 2008 Dodge Caliber. With the help of my trusted mechanic I had that car for 10 years and it had 182,000 miles on it. Ive been told Dodge doesn't usually last that long. Now I have a 2017 Rav 4 and am very happy! But I will miss my Caliber a little. It was a great, reliable car.
Most of use in the U.K. drive manual gearbox cars so we do have so many problems but I almost did new years day after sitting in my car with my wife and setting up my speed camera app because we have quite a few in the U.K. I pulled the lever up on the stick and put the car in reverse the was I crunching sound and the car jumped back words and stalled I forgot to put the clutch in the engine even though It is a diesel in is very quiet and I forgot the engine was running the funny thing when I put the clutch in it started up on the automatic stop start which hasn’t worked for months
Scotty I’ve heard it said from a reliable source that even if EVERY car and truck in the world was an EV the difference in the climate would be 0.02 degrees Fahrenheit in the whole scheme of things. It simply not worth all the trouble, disruption and cost.
I was working with a guy who was having trouble getting his transmission fixed and on the third trip I was dropped off with him and we were promised it's fixed. The car hadn't moved and the mechanics said they hadn't touched it. The boss said it's done. Terry said what about the puddle of oil below the car. He said I don't see any. Terry grabbed him by the neck and put his face down by it . He put some on his hand, rubbing it on the guys nose saying "DO YOU SEE IT NOW?".I couldn't leave fast enough.
I never flush a transmission. NEVER. I have only ever had one automatic transmission go bad on me. That transmission was in a work truck I owned & did not go bad until the truck had 200k miles on it.
Scotty, if you had to choose between a Toyota Grand Highlander 2024 or a Lincoln Aviator 2024 from strictly a mechanical comparison, which would you recommend? Happy New Year.

What's the difference between filling & draining transmission fluid vs a pure flush?
Respect us people who wear glasses. We paid good money to see you guys.

I agree!!! I have two 2003 FORD Windstar with 235000 plus miles never never flush the automatic transmission!!!!!

Flushed the transmission on my VERY RELIABLE 2012 CAMRY in August 2023 …. Then….
6 weeks later … my transmission basically died.
The mechanic asked me if I did anything to the transmission
I told him I had it flushed at Valvoline
He said : After 100,000 miles … if you haven’t done it regularly, then it’s best to not do it at all
What Scotty is saying is 100% correct
Ford= Fix Or Repair Daily

Happy new year Scotty and to all of you guys too
Same to you.

Hello,Mr.Scotty. Hope you have had a great new yr.
Happy New year Scotty Kilmer always delivering the best experience possible
Thanks for telling the Truth - we the people need it!
Just because its made in Mexico doesn't make it bad. Its the vehicles with a crappy design and cheaply made parts that are the issue. Tacoma's are made in Mexico and I'm happy with mine.
That principal is true except for "made in China."
“It’s the vehicles with a crappy design and cheaply made parts that are the issue“.. you mean like vehicles made from GM, Ford and Stellantis ? These are CRAP!! Sad to say. 😢
Hey Scotty,

It got lowered and painted about 6 sears ago.
It got arround 360,000 km on it but else its looking fine.

Should i buy it?
If they're serious about "green" then they need to start by getting all the non-commercial boats and yachts and mega yachts out of the oceans and lakes (Great lakes)
THEY USE A TON OF FUEL.
Good Morning Scotty! Wanted to wish you and family Happy and Healthy New Year!
Those chevy trucks from 1996 - 2005 ( Dex Cool ) had intake gasket leaks on The V6 motors .
@@lakerskid2013 everybody talks about that actually
@@DeathEnducer Well it’s not talked about enough
Your passion is noticeable. Thanks you. Happy New Year.

I follow your advice to not flush the transmission.

"computer crap". This says it all. Simple electronics for basic fuel injection is all you need. Anything newer is just begging for trouble.
