- An interview with bharathanatyam dancer and film actress Rukmini Vijayakumar, who looks back at the classical dance theatre production Prabhavati, that toured the US, Middle East and India last year.
Prabavati is an adaptation of a Telugu novel that tells the love story of an Asura princess and was produced to raise money for the charity AIM for Seva.
In this interview Rukmini talks about the production and her approach to choreography, costume design and Bharathanatyam dance. Candid rehearsal footage and a stage performance of Prabhavati at Christ College in Bangalore, is inter cut to the original music composed by Thirumale Srinivas.
The choreography of Prabhavati makes extensive use of karanas that Rukmini had studied under her guru Sundari Santhanam.
The video was filmed and directed by Miles Trevelyan-Johnson, an English cross-cultural musician and documentary maker based in Kerala.

I trained in Bharatnatyam as a kid. I always wanted to resume but always thought that most performers seemed very mechanical . She really inspires me a lot because she inserts ‘rasa’ in her performance . Thanks a lot 🙏🏼 lots of respect 🙏🏼 Might I say all your team members are very talented and super beautiful! The artistry and choreography of Rukmani's work in dance are superb! A wonderful holistic approach to her work.
As I emptied my espresso in a sicilian bar in Rome I looked up, high on the wall was a small mosaic that struck me like lightning. A simple phrase that read:
"Tradition is a matter to be considered alive and in evolution, otherwise it becomes something that does not pertain to life but only to memory" I asked the owner who the author was, he answered: My brother - he makes the pastries!
As I walked out I thought: Only an ancient people could...

Her dance is more vanity oriented and seems stunning on these grounds. Her example to the youth is more on a glamour based approach to techinque and abhinaya. Yet, its a phase that every artist goes through....Hope over time with their decline with obsession of technique a more satvika based approach to dance will emerge... Good wishes!

Is this production available on a DVD or somewhere online? Please consider bringing these productions to more cities within India as well... Your work is truly commendable! My heart skips a beat thinking about what the world would have missed if you had chosen a more traditional career path...
