Just to let you know, this is my 2nd or 3rd time watching this. I always come back here for a refresher. My roommate was getting a bit worried about what is going on and she asked me about B.O.B. and that she remembered I do this stuff for the fun of it. I jumped to it, educating her as much as I can as easily and without scaring her as well. Thank you!

For eye protection I would add ski googles that hug tight to your face to prevent debris from getting underneath the glasses

Quick Clot. Recovery magnet with eye loop (Northern Tool). More 550 cord. Coast makes the best headlamp available at Walmart for $35. Maglite sucks. The Energizer light 2 in 1 Fusion has a dimmer in the switch which will save battery power... takes 4 AA so lasts longer. Sig bottle is better. They've got good cooksets. Tarp is a must. Poncho's are small and they've got 'em at Walmart in camo. In the tool section they have lighted screw drivers for $5. Also a small ratchet set... the smallest one with the 1/4" - 3/8" ones. A hatchet is important. Med kit is missing a few things. They also have GMRS in the electronics section.

+P701 I agree, so many go out and buy ridiculously priced equipment just to show it off. A bit of reality is much more helpful...not everyone has an endless supply of money...unlike what so many try and portray in many of these survival/bug out type videos. It kind of gives some people an impression that they need to go out and spend tens of thousands of dollars to get all this stuff, when in reality you don't. Many times the less expensive stuff will work just as well, if not better than the outrageously priced stuff...sometimes that expensive stuff just sits on a shelf because you go out and spend xxx dollars on that item and you are now like wow that was stupid I don't want to use that it cost me way too much LOL.

Olympic Outdoors Dad To me it makes far more sense to buy stuff to use rather than toss it in a bag and look at it and go maybe I will use this someday...most likely not. Buy the stuff to use it, if it gets damaged, lost, destroyed, etc, replace it. No need to buy a bunch of crap and pile it in a corner "just in case"...it makes absolutely no sense to do that. Buy it and use it.

I like to carry the cotton balls dry along with 2 or 3 types of accelerant. Coconut oil, hand sanitizer, vasoline. all in small containers. And they all have uses other than just starting a fire. Flexibility and multipurpose.

One thing to consider, when looking for a backpack at Walmart also consider the computer bags in electronics department. I have found that the Swiss gear bags for computers are fantastic bug out bags. They are very well stitch and have large, strong, double zippers.

one trick i do is take used tea lights when the wife is done with them and fill them with cotton balls soaked in vaselene, then carefully wrap a half sheet of tinfoil around it. it gives you a little dry area to start your fire in wet conditions. i make these little things and just put them in whereever there is a kit of some type.

    • @stevesukert8851
      @stevesukert8851 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

Jjj 543 that is absolutely brilliant. As soon as I read this I scrambled to where I knew all our tea lights (spent & otherwise) and started preparing for the rolled storage. Thank you!

    • @stevederp9801
      @stevederp9801 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

I have a few lighters and alot of matches. But then I have about 10 tea lights. The idea is that when you're starting a fire you don't try to light the tinder, you light the candle because it's easier to catch a flame. Then you use the candle to start your fire and as soon as it's started you blow out the candle. Theoretically you could easily stretch your fire starting out to hundreds of times. Also a magnifying glass for starting a fire during the day so you can preserve the candle and matches.

Just a couple of things that I would add from Walmart would be some zip ties, A small fishing kit, one large rat trap, and one single serving package of peanut butter. But I live 82 miles from work and my bag doubles as a get Home bag.

I know this is an older video however working for a walmart I have had time to really study the "bug out" items.
Your list tho good would not be my personal go to.
    My list would be.
    1. A med. Sog molle bag for around $25
    2. Schrade schf10 knife $35
    3. Stanley cook set with 2 green plastic cups and lid. $15
    4. Stanley single walled Stainless steel nalgine bottle. $12
    5. 2 bic lighters, storm proof matches, fire steel, vaseline and cotton ball. $20 for all
    6. Sawyer mini, thick wall gallon jug of water (deer park or an empty juice gallon jug like welchs)$30
    7. 8x10 heavy duty tarp. $24
    8. Gurber multi tool $40
    9. Bushnell pro 2aa battory flashlight/head lamp combo pack $35
    10. 2 Mountain house meals $10
    11. Kind bars (any flavor) $4
    12. 200 ft. 550 cord. $15
    13. Stainless steel spork $4
    14. Ozark trail 1 person tent $24
    15. Sleeping bag (compact) $22
    16. Small proline molle pouch (first aid bag) $7
    17. Build my own first aid kit using walmart items $20-30.
This list should be right around the same price point you did in the video but with a few better options.

Really liked the pry/crobar and the facemask idea. The pry bar would make acquiring additional resources in abandoned buildings a lot easier or say removing the wire from a fence, thats what I like to see, tools that help you acquire more useful stuff!!! The face masks have loads of uses too, the cheaper versions would make a good first layer of a water filter and I wonder if the elastic would make a good wick in a tallow/cooking oil candle/lamp???

You got my sub and +1 solely based on the fact youre making a budget bag that people can afford.
I would also like to add that I strongly agree with you about the protective eye-wear and the dust mask. Camping and travelling in the dark,, under stress, you WILL get jabbed in the eye by twigs and low branches eventually. Chopping wood, breaking windows.. the list is endless. Protective eye-wear costs little and saves your primary senses.
Also, even a crappy dusk mask saves you from 95% of particulates in the air. Similarly, it costs little and can protect you from a lot. In a real nasty situation, even professional respirator equipment is not perfect, but even a dusk mask is better than nothing. If you need to walk past burning houses, its better to filter out 50% of the particulates, than breath it ALL in. It wont protect against gasses but it WILL keep some dust-crud out of your lungs (including fallout) better than nothing or a cloth wrapped around your head.
The same goes with the gloves... great choice. Better to get a bruised finger than hack it off by accident.
Lastly, I would like to offer a suggestion. Please forgive me if this is unwelcome as I dont want to be the keyboard warrior, second guessing someone who took the time to make a real video. I looked hard at water purification options. I almost bought that Sawyer straw, as it provides an almost limitless amount of water and is self cleaning. However in the end I went for a carbon filter option instead. My logic is this: If youre a rural or semi-rural prepper, go for the Sawyer straw. If you are an urban prepper go for something with a charcoal filter. If I bug out, I have water options in a ten mile radius, but they will be contaminated with chemical or pesticide run-off. Personally, I think the Sawyer option is better the closer you are to the wilderness, the closer you are to cities, you need to filter out chemical contamination more. Both filtration methods have their strengths, but this is my personal opinion.
Really like your approach and sensible suggestions. Thank you for an excellent video.

For some reason I can not post my own comment but I can respond to others comments. Do not go with the maglight led flashlights you have to keep fresh battery's in them or they will flicker or dim for no reason I suggest that you grab a flashlight from harbor freight they are generally better lights.

For those of you interested in maybe doing something a little bit bigger, walmart does carry SOG bags with molle on the front and they also carry Outdoor Products bags that come in a varriety of colors (green, blue, red, black, etc) that come with molle. the green and blue ones look especially non-tactical despite the webbing. Walmart is a preppers paradise, but always remember: shop Smart. Shop S-Mart.

Sootch, thank you. Important topic. Would you consider adding:
    1. Bottle of water.
    2. Jacket.
    3. Toothbrush. (And, other toiletries.)
    4. Large survival knife. (Something you could really baton sizable logs, or chop, with.)
    5. Axe.
    6. Folding Saw. (Really, any saw that could fell a tree. ie something bigger than a MT saw.)
    7. Tool set. (With tools like driver bits, pliers, wrench, scissors, hammer, etc.)
    8. Map.
    9. Garbage bags.
    10. Rain coat.
    11. Boots. (Or, other adequate shoes. You might not want to bug out in dress loafers or flip flops.)
    12. Antiseptc Gel (Or, suitable alternative. Something more than a few wipes from the first aid kit.)
    13. Small pot. (Something to boil water or cook with, other than your only thermos.)
    14. Dental Floss. (Or, toothpicks, dental picks, etc. Could help with dental issues and has other uses.)
    15. Sewing kit. (Thread and needle for patching clothes and wounds.)
    16. Ammo.
    17. Padlock.
    18. Metal coat hanger.
    19. Toilet Wipes. (You gotta go and you might as well be clean.)
    20. Waterproof container. (To hold small electronics, copies of family photos, or documents.)
    21. Visine.
    22. Benadryl. (Or, other hystmine blocker, if not in first aid.)
    23. Ziplock bags. (Organization or keep liquids from making a mess in the backpack.)
    24. Knife Sharpener. (Whetstone, Lansky blade medic, etc.)
    25. Small bottle of gun lube. (Good for cutting tools as well as a gun.)
    26. Tshirts. (See your video on 25 tshirt uses for survival.)
    27. DW40. (See your video on uses for survival.)
    28. Zip Ties. (See your video on uses for survival.)
    29. Medication. ( Extra pills you take regularly, epipen, inhaler, etc.)
    30. Writing tools. (Pen, pencil, marker, paper, etc)
After adding the above, you could remove:
    1. Multi-tool.
    2. Gerber Prodigy.
    3. Artic Watch Cap. (I'd remove that anyway, except extreme cold climates.)
    4. SS Thermos.
    5. Coleman Bio-Wipes.
And, you might need a bigger bag.

Also, to go with wire hanger..Pantyhose & you have a net to catch fish!
I would like to add a radio wrapped in ? A Faraday Cage way and don't forget to separate the batteries!
I like the PVC bow you made and also you can start a fire with a bottle of water...
      Did we include the Binoculars?
Playing cards & picture cards? Notebook?
I got a wet/dry one that is great...

But, you've given me pause, I'm always looking for new ways to do things and to make my pack as small as possible. You have given me inspiration for achieving that goal. I hadn't thought about these other items you pointed out until now. Of course, I have more ideas for these products and the order in which they'll fit in my pack. Between Walmart and Amazon Prime I have found EVERY THING I desired for my Bug Out Bags(except of course my firearms). I bought things individually and over a period of time and amassed just about all I need for camping and Get home bags for the wife and I...Home is where I prefer to wait out an emergency since that is where I have the greatest amount of supplies and concentration of material to weather an emergency situation being as how I have a garden, well, and a small acreage on high ground and a tornado shelter. I do however carry the wife's and my own Get Home bag each with supplies and gear for 3 days in each bag and my CCW weapon in the 8 passenger van we bought after our little Prius gave up the ghost at nearly half a million miles. It (the van ) is equipped with two wool blankets, a tarp, road emergency gear, including an inverter, walkie talkies, a good medical kit etc. in addition to the Get Home Bags and an extra set of clothing .Stay safe and prepared !

I don't recommend any non LED flashlight to workers any more (I'm a remote TV engineer on the road). With the Mag, the bulb replacements are pretty expensive, and you always have to carry spares. I've been carrying Mags for more than 25 years and have switched to the cheap LED versions from Harbor Freight. Otherwise, totally agree on lighting. The rest of the gear makes perfect sense. I think buying a kit from Walmart makes perfect sense, since it's all in one place. Great video!

completely agree with the LED sentiment but as a HFT freak, I would caution you about relying on the HFT flashlights. Both the black cylinder one, and the blue multi-light ie: the free ones, have failed me at less than optimal times. great glovebox lights and around the house lights

I would even suggest a cheap but good quality pellet rifle, like the Daisy Powerline 880 which shoots both pellets and BB's. I had one as a young man and took many a squirrel with it. They run around $40.00 and add a few tins of pellets and some BB's to go with it that are cheap too. A higher end pellet gun at Walmart is the Beeman dual caliber break barrel at around $150.00. The next thing I would add would be a little fishing rod and reel that I absolutely have come to love in the couple of years I have had it is a Zebco Dock Demon closed face fiberglass fishing pole that costs around $10.00 .They look like a child's rod but don't let that fool you these little poles can take a beating by some pretty big fish. The rod itself can be bent into a circle without breaking. It can be used like a slingshot to shoot your lure under docks and piers and low over hanging limbs with decent accuracy. If a small pole like that isn't for you then a good cheap alternative is the tried and true Zebco 33 rod and reel combo that usually runs around $25.00. If you are not that big on fishing or don't have the time to use a pole then the best thing at catching fish is to run a Trot Line which you can get pre-made and ready to go in the water after baiting the hooks pretty cheap. Get a cheap pan fish tackle box set and a few extra hooks and some extra line and you are set to hunt small game and fish to add to your food supply. I always carry a hand rake and a small garden trowel when I go camping or fishing for digging up bait like worms, grubs and other bugs, you can find them at Dollar Tree's sometimes for only a buck a piece. I hope it helps someone who may be looking for a few extra items to add that really make a difference when it come to survival.

Appreciate your disclaimer at the end! Wish more folks would include applicable disclaimer in their reviews. Nothing wrong with good brand name products from WalMart. I shop there all the time. That said, several items I would have purchased elsewhere. Mora knife, for example. To save money and obtain better quality, from what I understand on the latter. FWIW, I would have purchased the Stanley Adventure cup for boiling water & a single wall SS bottle to carry water. Not recommended to boil water in insulated bottles. Fine to carry one for hot coffee, providing the water was heated in another container.
Thanks for sharing. All those 3's are important!

I have tried the emergency ration bars. They're rather brick like and really dry. Prepare to take a sip of water with every bite to get them down easier and if you eat a lot they can sit heavy on the stomach. They're also a little crumbly so eat them over a plate bowl or napkin. Taste wise they're alright. Just a slightly bland apple cinnamon like the package says.

Do not underestimate the value of good eye pro. I was chased for three days by pathfinders, scent hounds and attack dogs during a military exercise. Thee most important single piece of equipment I had was my eye pro. It gave me the ability to run through the woods without worrying about my eyes. At the end of the training I looked like a rape victim. My clothes were shredded. Scratches all over my body from the wait-a-minute bushes. My team were the only ones to make it to the pick up site. Eye pro is something you don't think about until you're being chased.

Some things I see everyone misses. First Aid kits don't carry fingernail or toenail clippers so it's a quick add that saves you should you jam your finger and tear a nail. That way you don't reach the quick. Also, I haven't seen anybody make a bug out bag with those Space Bags you can find in housewares. I put a pair of pants, shirt, sweater, underwear (which I have yet to see anyone mention), and a couple of pairs of socks. You can seal the bag, roll the air out, and add it to the bag taking up much less room than you would otherwise. You would also want waterproof containers. You can pack them with small items so that they aren't buried in the bag. Then there's space blankets, ponchos, iodine, water cleaning tablets, carabiners clipped anywhere, fishing line and lure, and glowsticks for a backup light source that takes up little room and weight.
The Walmart where I live also had 2 types of wire saws. One was just the wire with handholds on each end while the other had chain links like a regular chainsaw but with handle grips on the ends. They'd be great for taking up little roon and being lightweight. Besides the MRE there's also the dehydrated meals with even desserts.
Oh, and in case someone is sensitive to iodine, the pharmacy has other disinfectants. Then there's bug spray and sunblock which can be essential depending on your location. There's also canteen bladders. A small tarp is a good thing to have also. First aid kits are a bit spare in the pain meds like Advil so you may want to add more. You want Imodium AD and any long term digestion aides. Hand cleanser`s a must along with at least 1 roll of TP. I think you might need a slightly bigger bag. lol

The Stanley canteen is a single walled container that I've used to boil water and nests in the five dollar stainless steel cup. Some Walmarts sell the small Esbit stove and Wet Fire cubes and the cup can be used to boil water for your coffee. I like the box of 16 Tasters Choice Colombian and for being instant, it's not too bad. I would add a few gallon size freezer ziploc bags for moisture protection or to collect water. I keep my beanie, socks and extra under layers in ziploc bags. A bicycle tire tube could be cut to size for different lengths for use as a tourniquet, not the best but effective nevertheless. I would add a large Magic Marker to the first aid kit should you apply a tourniquet to someone, mainly to write a "T" on the victim's forehead should he or she be unconscious (include time and date). A small note pad with a pen is also good to add to your IFAK. Whenever I administer first aid to any victim I write down what information is available or can be obtained, what I've done for first aid on any victim that is seriously injured...a CYA thing. All in all you presented a great option for those who are on a limited budget. Great video, Sootch!

You might want to add a bic lighter attached to paracord connected to a roll of chapstick and then add gorilla tape around each. Adding a small zip tie around the button of the bic lighter prevents your lighter from losing its fuel and can be removed and replaced once zipped, clipping the extra length makes it a little sharp though can be filed to prevent cuts. Plus the adhesive sticker is also flammable, once you have a empty lighter if the wheel is removed slowly the springs can be made into a snare & fishing hook and the childproof metal can be removed and can also be made into a fishing hook.

One category of bug out bag is one for taking to a mass population shelter. This is the most common scenario. You'll be forcibly evacuated to a shelter, and you'll have to have one bag/backpack ready. That type of bag will need different items than the category meant for living on the move independently.

    Food.
I've found most Outdoor Products aren't bad. Ozark Trail is not bad for many things, just not sleeping bags. UST, most of their stuff sucks. Had to return a few UST items. Overall, Walmart is a great place to get things going for cheap. I'd just get tools and sleeping bags elsewhere.

Those in the outdoor/camping section tend to be higher priced but not necessarily better quality.

The rubber duck antenna it comes with is good for a few miles but a longer whip will give you much farther. The radio is similar in size and weight to midland radios.
