These Kumquats are the first actual TREES I've planted in containers. My previous container plantings were my blueberries, dragon fruit, and all of my raised bed veggies. If you want to check out the "Sensei" Hori Hori garden knife, check it out here: amzn.to/2KZFWMb (my wife is thrilled I'm not taking kitchen knives outside anymore, lol). What have you had success growing in containers?
well in zone 8 had them in the ground ligth cold put a sheet over it, after seen you i went and got a meyer lemon and a pink guava and put them in containers, my friend is bringing me an avocado from arizona nursery, i am in 6 B so this going to be alot of work, plant to keep them outdoors then in fall put them inside my window well out of my basement, we cover the entire opening with polycarbon plastic roof so kind a like a 6' undergroung greengouse 3 feet above all afternoon sun, you have no idea how lucky you are living there
Wow, Maria! That reminds me of my father-in-law who figured out how to plant palm trees next to his house in Portland Oregon. Took some work, but worth it. I agree, we are blessed and spoiled when it comes to our growing conditions!
YES! Kyle THE Intern is the man. I'd have him record every video if I could. He stands head and shoulder above other men in his filming skills, as well as literal height. MORE Kyle? A resounding yes
Yay Kimquats! What a great addition to your Orchard! My kids love them. I have two in the front two their about 4 years old. I never get a chance to do a harvest video since my kids always eat them. At one point my daughter was taking some to school, she introduced them to her friends and they loved them so they woild ask her for some every day lol. Its blooming time.
This was a great little video, gave me a lot of ideas for our cherry tree that I'm about to plant out into a whisky barrel. :) Thank you for making this video, it helped me a lot. ;)
Thankyou for your very informational video! It would truly help me as I have just purchased a Fig and Loquat 5 gallon trees and and 2 whiskey barrels from Home Depot hoping to find tips and tricks on how to plant it without as you mentioned...Killing it! Can I use broken marble chips at the bottom of the barrels in order to plug the holes from dropping the soil out as I have no weed barrier sheets? Any ideas for my above projects will be appreciated. Thanks for your video again and hope to see you with some new and bright planting tips! Stay well and blessed! G'day mate!!
Thanks for watching, and here's to hoping you have a successful experience. Some sort of broken marble is fine, as long as it allows water to pass by, while keeping the soil in the container. If you think of it, Let me know how it goes!
Hello busy gardener, first of all thanks for all you do in teaching us. Can the same planting medium be used for satsuma orange, Valencia, and calamendin orange? I have a meiwa and planted it in miracle grow citrus and it's not doing well. Do you suggest I change it to this medium? Thanking you in advance 🤗
Hi Gail! Thanks for the encouragement 😊. All of those Citrus can be planted in containers, but choosing dwarf trees will work best to start within a pot. Also consider planting trees in an actual loamy soil, Vs the shredded plant material I planted in. Trees will do best without roots in decaying material
Good morning, I have over 30 fruit trees and over 30 fruit bushes in containers. My concern is having the right soil for my kumquat, calamendin, satsuma grapefruit and blood orange. Thanks for your advice. I bought the soil that you used in the video but are you saying it's not the correct kind?
@@TheBusyGardener That oak is tough! I've just put 5x 25mm holes in the base of three barrels, I did make sure to stagger the planks that I drilled as far as possible. I geuess we'll find out in 15 years...

Kyle the Intern is back! I'm glad to see the channel is growing and you're able to bring in your intern more.

Born in '88 and recognized the Crocodile Dundee quote immediately! 😂
See! It's good to know SOME people are cultured (unlike Kyle the Intern) 😂 😂

I've seen my kiddos gravitate toward picking smaller fruit. Berries, cherries and kumquats LOL!

Perfect timing. I just bought two whiskey barrels.
Nice! Now get planting 😃
I am just about to plant peach, pear, apple and lemon trees in containers. And once they fill out a little bit my hope is to put them in the ground.

All 80’s babies grew up saying “that’s not a knife, this is a knife!” Haha!
LOL! This was one of my favorite moments on any video. 80's babies for the win!
@The Busy Gardener xem cách bạn làm và trồng cây thật là kỉ thuật chúc thành công nhé!

Thanks so much for your advice. What is a good loamy soil to purchase?

Hi Me
Just wanted to know that any fruit can be planted in that way or even on a cement container can be done without killing a plant
As long as the plant container has drainage at the bottom, you can plant in most types of containers
@@TheBusyGardener I thank you
When the kumquat trees bloom, do I need to take off the fruit from the past season to focus on the new fruit production or will they grow in harmony?
Let them grow together. Citrus blooms while last year's fruit is still on the tree.
Thanks for your input. Will do 🌱
Would a snow fountain cherry tree be OK un the oak barrel? I'm looking for a bigger pot
The bigger the barrel and more durable the barrel, the better. Make sure you're pruning the top to be in balance with the root system
What about for a Honey Babe peach tree, what kind of potting soil?
Something with decent drainage. Definitely add mulch to the top
Hi I just saw ya barrel.why only one hole what size please n do.u put anything under ya barrel for air like brick under ya barrel 🙄
I made one hole because I didn't want to weaken the wood bottom. No bricks beneath, because it's slightly raised and no issues with drainage

Can they grow in Zone 5?
Not unless they're kept in a greenhouse, unfortunately. They are hardy down to 18 degrees Fahrenheit, and can remain outdoors in Zones 9 and 10.
That’s a knife! 😆
😆😂 Too funny, right?!?
How many bags of soil?
Ended up with around 1.5 per container!
