The knife is called the 'Tusk Knife', made by Loyal Blades. It was a Kickstarter item several years ago, but I think he still sells them. Today I learned new things. Earlier today I was listening to old videos of folks being interviewed from the 1920's and so forth who are already at the end of their lives. Just to hear people born 2 centuries ago, whose parents even potentially touched the 1700's. Then, of course, I was reminded of how profoundly racist the era was. lol. It's nice to finish off the day with an equally interesting segment of how folks used to do stuff and why. I gotta say, I wanna try this. I haven't the means, but I sure as hell want to try it.

      @@laurakloewer1468 Yeah, Siver is doing well! He just became the director of a camp in Nebraska- moved a couple days ago, so he's busy getting settled in. As for teaching, I was an adjunct for 3 years, and have been full-time for the last 10. So 13 years of teaching under my belt! It was a good run, but the job is no longer aligned with me is all. As for TH-cam, I started the channel last April, so it's almost a year now. I don't post too often, but it's a fun hobby, and brings in some side money as well, which helps fund my adventures. I just purchased a canoe and got it all registered out here in Iowa- planning on solo canoeing the Racoon River early next week. My classes are all online so Katie and I have been basing ourselves out of our condo in WDSM, allowing us to be close to family members that are having some health issues. We'll see what happens this fall if they need me back on campus or not... suppose I'll cross that bridge when I get there. Until then, we're relaxing, travelling, etc. Rented a house on the beach in Florida for most of April- will be going down there in a week or so until early May. Got a big fishing expedition to Northern Canada in June if the border opens up. Headed to Nova Scotia in July as well. And you? All well? Life going swimmingly?

    Hey MvH, you should make a video on what guns that should be added. I personally would want to see a Winchester model 94. In gameplay it would use rifle ammo and have no smoke cloud because 30-30 was a smokeless cartridge.

    The reason for the lack of trees on the plains was the buffalos. In the summer lightning would strike the ground setting fire to the dry grass. When the new grass grew it would attract the buffalo. Having seen this the Indians would also set fire to dry grass knowing the new grass would attract the buffalo. The burning of the grass had the added bonus that the new grass was much sweeter and therefore more attractive to the buffalo. The burning of the grass would usually burn any saplings trying to grow there which is why there are so few trees on the plains.
    The use of fire to manage the environment was world wide. The Australian Aborigine's did the same thing thousands of years ago. And just like the plains it was to improve hunting. 11,000 years ago at a place call Star Carr in northern England the reeds around the lake there were also burned. When the reeds grew back they grew thicker so made very good material for thatching. The reeds, like the grass, have a higher sugar content and are edible to humans. It would be like growing your own candy store.

    • @GiveMeYourNachosButthead
      @GiveMeYourNachosButthead 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I like this idea; but for the time frame maybe making a Civil War veteran would be cool/interesting OR a Rough Rider soldier who fought in the Spanish-American War would be more accurate to the time frame. I’ve seen pics of Civil War veterans from the late 1800s, and most of them wear their hats and pins/buttons but pretty much dress classy or kinda hillbilly.
