I can not believe I'm getting to see this ship because our father served during WW I on the USS Nahma and that has been 100 years ago. I'm amazed and humble to view it here on TH-cam, thank you so much for sharing this adventure.
Built by J & G Thomson on the Clyde Scotland as Nahma from a design by G L Watson; launched in 1897 for owner Robert Goelet, wealthy real estate owner and developer. After he WW1 service she became a rum runner during prohibition. Renamed Istar and register under a British flag, in a scheme organised by Sir Brodrick Cecil Hartwell. He and his investors had early success but he lost money when his shipments were seized and confiscated. After this she was taken over by Marine Products Limited in a scheme designed to harvest sharks for their skin to convert to leather. The expert behind the scheme was a Dr Ehrenreich. Istar was converted to a factory ship and after several years sitting in London Docks ended up in Durban South Africa, to be scuttled in 1831. Her sister ship was Mayflower built for Robert Goelet's brother Ogden in the same yard by the same designer and at the same time. They were almost identical. Whilst Istar was rum running, Mayflower was the official launch for 5 USA Presidents - did anyone see the irony?

Incredible! My family purchased her bell before she was scuttled in 1931. Unfortunately it was stolen from our home in Cape Town in 2002.
