You guys talk about knees/foot in sport oriented videos and brain damage in mma/fight related videos. What do you want us to do? Sit on the couch and do nothing? We are built to work and play tough. Use your body to its fullest potential, that's heaven
Let's just say that after age 45, doing this is no longer a sport - it becomes a chore. After age 65, almost an impossibility. That's why there's such a thing as a coach. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.

I am 66 years old. Believe it or not, when I was 6-7 years old, they used to televise a variety of different sports. This is tame compared to what I remember watching of this sport almost 60 years ago. Those guys then would make it to the top and then start down. I firmly remember those crazy guys back then taking 2-3 or at the most 4 steps to get back down! I swear it's true. They basically fell. Their spiked shoes hitting the trunk of the tree so hard that it would break loose as their heads came by their feet! Crazy! Look for some videos of this sport from 50-70 years ago, and you'll see what I mean!
I'm 76 and was a pole climber in the Army. When I was overseas we had 90 ft. Poles on the corner of our compound to light up the compound. When they burned out I had to climb up and change them.
I use to work in Woss Camp BC (early 70's ) on Vancouver Island. It did logging big time. I worked during the summers (4 month university summer holiday) doing government highway surveying, and one summer I stayed in Woss Camp. I was working on the then new island highway from Campbell River to Port Hardy. At that time there was a logging competition held at Woss Camp. I watched the guys running up a 100 ft (?) pole and dropping down. They were awesome. Log-rolling, chopping, sawing and other stuff were also fantastic.❤
@davidgray6999 they do indeed. To win a bet, I measured the height of one of these straight-as-a mast trees (using my transit and tape). The logger who bet me was highly skilled, but not particularly aware of "the metrics" of the trees. He bet that the tree was 275 feet. I suggested that it was not over 175 feet. The bet was immediately cast down. I measured it at 167ft 6 inches, and won a case of beer!😄
@davidgray6999 Let me brag a little:- I tended to have a "good eye" for measuring distances, angles, and so forth. I was a math major at UVic, but essentially a surveyor - and a good one, incidentally. I was a 20 yo at the time. I was unabashedly and openly given the toughest surveying jobs. I have lotsa' stories - and how!😁
Went out to Washington in 1978 thinking I was going to be a lumberjacks chain monkey. While I could shimmy up a pole by hand and handle a chainsaw pretty well I wasn't going to do what was required of me for that job. Here's to The lumberjacks who know what an axe smells like.
The way down, when those spikes go into that trunk, if you can't retrack fast enough, your knees are buckling bad. My buddy did this for a while, he tore both ACLs in his venture.
I saw a friend run up a tree like that and used the same technique coming down. He offered to teach me, and I declined. I couldn't do anything but shake his hand.
When it comes to competition like this, they do actually come down that fast. They're required to touch one foot every 30 feet and the poles are 90 feet tall.
I work on cellphone towers. we had this one bow legged Californian white guy, green guy, come to work with us. He was obsessed with being a lineman where they would have competition like what you see in this video. He would talk and brag about it constantly. All the way up until the day I made him get onto the tower. Boy his attitude changed real quick. White knuckles just sitting in 1 place for hours, can't move. And look at anything. Scared shitless.. Maybe I'm a bad person but I really get some enjoyment when I see people talk up and brag about their past. But can't handle the job at hand in the moment. That enjoyment is soon squashed by the reality of being 1 man short and now I have to make up for that. "Get off of my tower and look for another job"
That's a lot harder than it looks. A lineman friend stuck a hundred dollar bill at the top of a training pole & said I could have it if I could get it. I didn't, btw. 🤣
