"I don't want to say "obviously"". Well done, you! You're acknowledging what's called "the curse of knowledge". Once you know something, it's easy to fall into the trap of inadvertently making other people feel dumb for not recognizing what is now obvious to you. I appreciate the kindness in which you approach your instruction.

I know very little about antique dolls, so I appreciate getting a close-up look with some information. I remember taking some books out of the library about antique dolls when I was a kid in the 80s, but I never owned one and stuck to modern dolls. However, I still find older dolls interesting. A tour of various dolls from one manufacturer like Jumeau would be good because then we could learn some of the defining characteristics of that brand.

Serendipitously began written communications with Lynda Marx: I had at the time recently discovered a Marianne de Nuñez antique reproduction Bru bébé and began asking questions on eBay. Unbeknownst to me, the late Mrs. de Nuñez -- a very gifted doll artist in her own right and a member of NIADA -- was a contemporary of Lynda's. So imagine my eyes popping out of their sockets when the great Lynda Marx replied. Before long, I had purchased a true-antique doll from Lynda's own collection and purchased several antique reproduction dolls by Lynda Marx and by Lynda and Alan Marx -- including the sweetest JDK asian toddler. And, Rachel, you're spot on about the details of an antique reproduction created by Lynda Marx and the time that the doll artist invests in sculpting, painting and sewing outfits for the dolls.❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ HUGE shout-out to Lynda!💐 (Lynda, I'm commenting under my YT name, but I hope you remember me by my mentioning discovering Marianne's antique repro Bru bébé.)

Hello! I really love these videos and I was wondering if you would considere doing a video explaining jumeau dolls, or in different antique doll "brands", and when is a doll considered "antique" or a "collectible", bc I am new to this and I'm kind of at loss. Like, I have two antique dolls passed down from my grandma (not branded), one made of plaster, I think, from arround 1940, and one made of plastic, from arround 1970... maybe. Either way, I know she had a couple more that were "fancier" and I was wondering if I could identify them, but I don't know how. Either way, these videos have me really hyped. Thx for making them.

I love learning about the more antique, dolls, especially through your videos or Linda’s or other presenters…thanks so much for all this informations for it helps us to appreciate dolls & their history, which leads me to my question….Through a sewing group I belong to, I learned about women’s “Pockets” & how they made them, used them, some history…( I just received the book, The Pocket”, a hidden history of women’s lives). anyway, are there dolls whose costumes feature the “pocket” which was worn underneath a women’s skirt, that are specific kind of collector’s items? The book, The Pocket , does show some dolls with their outfits & their pockets…..just curious, for dolls themselves reveal so much about history….I’m just fascinated by these “Pockets” in general, probably because I never knew about them, until the presentation…..

Rachel, am I correct that the bisque used in antique dolls was white and the flesh color was painted on the outside, so if you look inside the doll's head the bisque will be white? And reproductions are often made with flesh colored bisque that does not need to be painted, so the inside of the head will also be flesh colored? Maybe this is not always true, but it seems that this is what I have usually seen in antique vs repros.

It depends on the type of doll. There are artist reproductions that are made in the right way with an artist signature and sometimes they may have different colors of bisque. Speaking about dolls that were made to be frauds and look like antiques, they are made in the same way as an antique with paint on top of the bisque. I would say that most are made like the old way - with a white or pinkish color bisque and then painted.

Hello Lolita, thank you for sharing your special doll memory with us. Dolls like the one you described, with walking and head-moving mechanisms, were quite popular in the 1950s and can be a treasure to rediscover. While I can't personally search for the doll, you might find luck searching online auctions, doll forums, or specialized doll shops that carry vintage items. You can also consider attending a doll show or contacting doll experts to help you in your search.
Since you originally got your doll in Mexico, she might be a unique regional piece, making her extra special. Wishing you all the best on your journey to reconnect with a cherished part of your childhood. Your story is heartwarming, and I hope you find your special doll again. 🎀
