It was terrible and undignified. The focus should be on those who went on their journey.🕯🕊 Quiet music and good camera work. That's all it takes to commemorate. Don't get me wrong, I love dance and ballet. But not in this last commemoration. Whoever staged this should be fired. Emmy 2023 shows how Heart touching remembrance can be.
They should sit down and watch the annual TCM In Memoriam from the last several years to get an idea of how to do it properly. Also, it doesn't need singers, it doesn't need dancers, and it doesn't need tiny text to cram it all in. Somehow the Academy keeps managing to screw it up year after year. Supposedly to be included a form needs to be completed - it's like even in death they need to campaign for a spot at the Oscars. There were people like Norman Jewison ( a seven-time Academy Award nominee who just died in January) that weren't even included.
I think the complete extended readable In Memoriam segment and future segments of such will be exclusively available to see on the tv network's streaming service for a fee like certain NFL games (sarcasm).
Pay tribute to everyone in smaller segments throughout the show and don't leave anyone out, or take the section out entirely. If they're not going to do it right, don't do it at all.
I'm adding my 2 cents...my husband and I sat watching and commenting to each other about how disrespectful the whole production of the In Memoriam was. Why were a group of dancers more important than paying tribute to each individual who had passed? It was more than distracting, I felt like it was downright rude to the deceased and an embarrassment for the Academy.
What's even more disrespectful is when multiple individuals are shown at the same time. They each deserve their own moment of glory. ETA- I hate the addition of dancers and singers. I'd be ok with someone singing as long as it was a soft song.
It was such a wide and far-away shot you couldn't see any of the people they were memorializing! No one wants to see the violin players or ballerinas twirling around we want to see the memorial
I agree that the SAG awards finally did an honourable job - no distractions on stage - just lovely background music and closeups of everyone. Too bad the Oscars thought they had to do something of a production
My first reaction was: "Dancers? Really? Why are they here, this is just killing the moment." And yes for the viewers we could not see most of the names and photos. What a lack of respect really, why do they keep messing up that segment every time? Just keep it simple, music but no performers and simply photos or scenes from movies that's it.
I was so upset over that. I was such a huge fan of his. A phenomenal actor who was actually in more Oscar nominated and winning movies than Matthew Perry. Wtf was he honoured because he was not a movie star.
They should have just shown the pictures without all the extra stuff. It was unnecessary. Honestly, I didn't know that small-ass writing was people who passed away. I was thinking, what the hell is that?
As a Huge and I mean HUGE Tina Tirner fan, I was pleased by her inclusion but others deserved more of a highlight and Lance’s picture exclusion is painful for many of his admirers including me.
Why can't the Oscars copy what T.C.M. REMEMBERS does for its end-of-year In Memoriam segment? T.C.M. REMEMBERS far out-shines what the Oscars have been doing!
At this point, I'd be more surprised if an Oscars didn't have some controversy surrounding it. When was the last time we had one where it was just celebration of acting talent and performance, new height of cinematography and honoring the hard work of everyone involved, instead of showing us poor attempts at tasteless humor, actors' trying to be a macho, or actors who sadly passed away, not even given a proper honorable mention and send off?
I was extremely disappointed that Tom Sizemore was not included in the list. He was in several Oscar winning and nominated films. And sadly was never nominated when he should’ve gotten recognition for Saving Private Ryan. This years in Memoriam was insulting having freaking dancers and not paying tribute to some of the big movie stars. It was infuriating. 😡😡😡
What a botch! AMPAS should issue a formal apology for this. The duet singing "Time to Say Goodbye" was great--they did not need any dancers. Don't know why some people are stuck on the performance in Step Brothers. That's just STUPID. It's just a song. It can be used for any situation.
I agree with Looper's reaction on this topic. It was absurd and weird. Also, Cena naked was a tasteless prank, also weird as choice. Some of this years Oscars Ceremony was elegant, which was a return to past glory, loved it. But these other moments were really false notes.
It was shown so badly this year. Could not see the people we were supposed to honour.. too much other stuff going on, and camera focused on that instead of the screen. Not respectfully done this year. Great disappointment
Of all the years of watching the Oscars, this memorial was the worst. Most of the time I could not tell who was portrayed in the vignettes and the dancers on stage was distracting to the screen display.
I totally disagree with these criticisms of the In Mamoriam which I thought was touching and artistically done. I also love the song Time to Say Goodbye and thought it very appropriate. The song cannot be ruined ever. It is beautiful.
No everyone we don’t need to be worried they’ve include the ones at the end of the Oscar segment In Memoriam there’s no need to worry about and by those people are gonna sue the Oscars for snubs The Memoriam segment I wish this segment was discontinued
As is starting to be the norm with the Oscars, the producers and director, totally failed to understand what the ‘In Memoriam’ section should be about. No one wants to even see musicians, let alone singers and dancers. The total focus should be solely on in the images and names of those lost in the past year. This year’s awful production was a total distraction and the TV director exacerbated this by concentrating the cameras on the insulting and disrespectful production number on stage. To then clump so many names in a jumbled list at the end was the ultimate insult. Shame on the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences!
AHHHHHH!!!!!! The Memoriam segment was ruined! There was supposed to be no dancing and no singing. And those viewers criticizing it were disrespectful. They should have been just quiet and not disrespectful. Those blockheads!
If you perceived the song as a joke it is your problem because it’s one of the most beautiful songs ever and it was perfect for the moment, and if you don’t want to get distracted by the performers then PAY ATTENTION to the people being remembered and watch the performance on another time, that’s what I did. Although I do believe they should have made it longer to pay the proper tribute to ALL the ones we lost, still don’t shoot hate at the whole memorial because it was truly beautiful
I feel like they fuck up this part every year. They always forget somebody. It doesn't need to be a major production. Just show everybody that passed on a big screen that had involvment in the industy with a pic and what they contributed. Literally that simple. Scrap the interpative dance and live performance at least to the home viewers.
You think the interpreted dance performers and the sudden appearance of the recently deceased they couldn't fit into the segment was bad, they have nothing on when they showed Oscar winning set decorator Osvaldo Desideri as one of those we lost the previous year. They showed the wrong person's photo! Production Designer Ferdinando Scarfiotti's image is shown in his place! He shared the Oscar for Art Direction with Desideri on The Last Emperor, so I guess that's where the confusion came from. But seriously?! This is Jan Chapman's image used instead of Janet Patterson's all over again!
"One of the worst"??? It was the worst of all time. I really don't get how whoever complies the sad list of deceased actors/writers/writers/directors etc, just how do you go about still managing to leave off names and big names too? It's nothing new and it's happened so many times in the past, but together with the worse visual presentation that the viewers couldn't even see the images and names of the dearly departed was a shocker.
You clearly did miss something. He's a massive actor and has numerous Hollywood films. Not just friends. You can't be surprised thry didn't snub matthew perry... the whole world would have been in an uproar
I love Matthew Perry but he's not cinematic giant. We must not simply throw away words like this.Maybe he would be better than Christian Bale had he be given the chance but he's not the same level based on the movies he done.
I agree, except for the choice of song. There have always been times when a beautiful song has been hijacked for some stupid movie, and it will happen again, no doubt. It is up to us not let it spoil the song forever. Take some personal responsibility and just shake off the bad memory! What does it say about you that you remember or even saw that stupid movie in the first place?
All they have to do is tell a video editor to create a video that's so many minutes long and pays respect to everyone that passed away. It can't be that difficult. I've seen much better in memoriam videos on TH-cam.
at least most of the winners this year were deserved, after the shame that was last year... Everything Everywhere All At Once is without a doubt the most overpraised film ever to win the awards it did... the only award that film deserved was Best Supporting Actor for Ke Huy Quan... glad to see Disney got nothing again, well deserved.
Every year they manage to make this segment worse than the previous year's, this year must be a new record low, it's as if they do this on purpose and flatout refuse to listen to criticism. We don't want friggin' singers or dancers on stage for this one, play instrumental music for four minutes is that too much to ask for instead of this disrepectful behavior with in and out zooms. Are total morons in charge of this show, apparently. The departed artists are the important ones for this segment, nothing else. Perry and Turner's inclusion is a bit odd, TV actors usually aren't included and a singer, so many other famous actors ignored. And that tiny text of names at the end is the final insult.
You know I was like how can they forget Lance Reddick the actor from John wick and he passed away I was like very sad😢. Honesty I'm just like guys come on

They could have just kept the Bocellis and not include a dancing part. It would have been way better and more respectful to the moment.
For sure! I kept wanting to click on my TV for fullscreen
