Why don’t you hire an assistant coach who knows how to break a press and coach a zone defense? You can’t ask 7 footers to guard a bunch of nats man to man.
Not sure why everyone always calls for the zone. Very few coaches "know how to coach a zone defense" because by the stats almost nobody in the country runs it as anything more than a change-up anymore (and I don't see how having change-ups would make a noticeable difference for the team). Unless you recruit very long and quick players to do it, zones just give shooters easy gaps to find which is why Boeheim's one of the only ones still using it
As an Illinois fan who lives 2000 miles away from the Midwest, I can speak from a different perspective. I hope Illinois competes to be near the Top 10 to 15; however, I hope that the two classiest coaches in the Big 10 (guys with a longer tradition than Brad could possibly have created in his short tenure of competing for the top 5 each year, I hope we see Purdue and/or Michigan State in the Final 4, with one of them winning an NCAA tour name t. I was raised in Southern Illinois and still have family there. I know they still hold Matt Painter in the highest regard because of his early career tenure at SIU. The class programs of the conference for over a decade or two have been Michigan State and Purdue.

Cool. Your Super Bowl was beating purdue while Purdue won the Big 10 by 3 games outright and won the Big 10 Tournament and Purdue got a 1 seed. All the things that matter outside of winning the dumb single elimination 68 team tourney at the end.
Purdue has always done it right and a clean program.
