My son, his wife and I are starting our 6th week off grid in the woods. No cabin just 2 canvas tents with wood stoves and other tents for storage. I’ve wanted this my whole life and never thought I’d get it. I’m single 71yo woman so I knew I couldn’t do it by myself, but city living to me was just meaningless and boring. I was elated when my son said he wanted to do this. Even after just this little bit of time I know you are so right in your assessment of this lifestyle. Everything takes 10x longer out here. To wash dishes, even just a few, is quite a chore and takes a minimum of an hour start to finish. I do think nostalgically about my apartment kitchen. We’re in the Pacific Northwest east of the Cascade mountains and we’ve had very cold weather and lots of snow-then ice-then mud. Mud’s the worst. We are about an hour from the laundromat and showers in town and have done that a few times. I love the woods and the snow and so far wouldn’t change this for anything. I have to move slower and more deliberately than normal or things will spill or break, especially just living in a tent. W e prepared for this by doing research and buying many of the things we thought we’d need. Mostly we need a 4-wheeler and a second vehicle, Lots more water storage and a mechanics course! I hope we make it, but it’s not for the faint of heart. I have an intense admiration for all the women who, for thousands of years, have cooked food over an open fire or on a wood stove! Thanks for telling the truth about this.

Thanks for sharing your story. I wish you and your son and daughter in law all the best on your off grid journey. Not all days are like this video. There is also beauty and strength that comes only through hardship.

Have been following your Dad for years! He has always been a fountain of info.
We live off grid. Have for the past 3 years. What you say is true.😂😂😂
We are 3K feet up 18 miles from the Canadian border in North Central WA state.
I am a retired commercial/industrial electrician. Problem solving is my thing. Completed the house this past winter. Fenced in the solar panels, prepared the ground, fenced and planted an orchard. Built a chicken coop and run. Building the root cellar right now. Simple Pump ordered for the well. Without water we are nothing.
Everything we do is heavily constructed and built first class. It’s cheaper in the long run to do it really right. As you say winter is when stuff breaks and it is -22F with 3 feet of snow on the ground.
Always working. Always. Tough times are coming. We wouldn’t trade our remote location for anything.

@@cabininthewoods517 Don't risk an emergency to have to retrieve emergency supplies... Keep it simple is the RULE. At least, in the meantime, keep the generator and boost packs close at hand then they're most necessary. I once fell on a driveway's black-ice and lost damn near a year recovering from breaking my lower leg bones in 17 places...
Great advice and necessary advice you talked about in the vid! Keep your head up!

Wooooow! You, people working on the fields in the countryside, you guys are my heroes! Thnx for telling us your truth here, I wanted a garden to get my food, I only get the wild plants like netteln, brenessel in Germany, hurtigstes in Spanish, and dandelion and malva to make pesto and tea and It takes so much of my time that I have no time nor energy to plant other things, sometimes I buy the baby lettuce and put it in our garden, then the little animals come to eat it! 😂😂😂 I do not want chemicals in my garden, so, but then cooking and doing the daily stuff in our place takes me time as well and in this age I am getting slower, so I started doing weight exercises besides the yoga and clean the parasites out of my body, and as well takes time, but then there I am going, Then I will plant broccoli, had pumpkins coming in our compost and it was great! 😃 big Mexican hug and greetings, love to your family, thanx again. 🤗🥰👍

I agree, I've felt the same way, but I wouldn't change it for the world. Bad times ahead, and we're going to be very grateful to live this way.

Your comment at 5:50 made me laugh out loud. "the peace you have because no one else is this crazy" LOL. Thank you for laying down some hard facts. We as a society are so soft, we can't imagine living life even a hundred years ago.

Excellent advice. Roughed it when I was a young man. I’m older now, I’m forever grateful for the experience that built me and gave me survival skills and coping skills however, I’m more grateful for the ease with which I live now. Waking up in a warm house with water in the tap, food in the fridge and magical electrical wonders all around is a religious experience…and it should be. Godspeed and I hope more dreamers see your video.

Happy Easter, and stay strong brother. There is a good reason why most people live in urban areas. You are miles ahead of all of them when and if everything goes south. Living remote is hard and expensive but the tradeoff is worth it.

I would give up everything to be 100% self-sufficient. I would rather work hard for myself than work for someone else struggling to afford modern-day life.

I just watched your latest video. I think you are a very responsible parent. I saw the lessons you were giving your daughter. You were very patient and explained the safety precautions very well.
You might not have a big house, but you are giving Lilly a wonderful childhood and an education that surpasses any public school.

Looks like you are having a hard day. I am probably going to be living a cabin lifestyle. Not in quite such a remote area. I can walk to town in an hour if I need to.
I am 52 and running out of options. I am divorced, my kids are grown, and I have come to the realization that I probably shouldn't live with other people.
I am planning on building something large enough to sleep in but small enough to hide from the township.
I never did live in the city. I don't need to go to a store everyday. I don't need many creature comforts. Just a place to exist.

      @cabininthewoods517 ,
I grew up on a farm out in the sticks. Cows still needed to be milked whether there was a power outage or not. There was always work to do. There was firewood to cut and split, crops to harvest ect. I remember picking corn by hand because it was to muddy to use the corn picker. In the summer there was hay to bale and beans to hoe.
I get your frustration. Life is hard out there. Just remember that you have a wonderful family that loves you. I am sure your wife will have something hot for you when you come in out of the snow.

Amen, brother. Add in chickens, horses or other livestock and the stakes are upped! I'm not offgrid but I am out in the boonies. Right now my car needs a transmission and my one ton diesel ranch truck (I drive to the town that is 22 miles away) is not working properly and I need to get to town. But I won't move back to "civilization".

while you have a point its not like stressful cities jammed in close to others with crazy bills and concrete and lack of trees and a job that depletes you is any better. I guess life anywhere is super stressful and that's just what it is. It's good tho to remind ppl not to fantasize and I always figured the ones who just tell cheerful stories are not presenting the entire picture. I think it comes down to picking which struggle is better for each person but there's stress everywhere. Also you still have more real life skills than city ppl who are just zombies. I'd love to learn more real life skills rather than the fake things the city is full of.

Just remember you as a person got to take up 🆙 and down in life . Just got to put your foot 🦶 forward in life . As we as people look 👀 back in life you will make it just don’t give up . Hey 👋 the weather come and go with time , same as our 4 season on earth 🌏. There nothing easy on this earth for sure take a lot of hard work 😓 and time from the time we come into this world 🗺, until the good lord above call our name in my words . Old times back 100 yrs ago work hard 😓 with a buck per / hr and 2 buck for there horse 🐎. If there had a horse . Plus bring up 9 to 18 kids the same time . I sit back now think 🤔 about it , HOW DID THERE DO IT ? come down to hard work all there life . Them it love 💕 between them to make it work out in time . Here a little secret in life not what we take out of life is what we leave behind in life is pass on in the family. Sorry for my English own got a grade 4or 5 education. I like to work hard before listening 👂 to teacher in one room school house . Hey 👋 life was hard but hard work pay off buddy .
