For the newspaper, his right hand(our left) when he starts to drop it he pulls it behind the news paper. When he goes to show it off, he pulled that side close to him, ultimately hiding the iPad.
He's mostly using slight-of-hand, but it's still pretty amazing the tricks that he can pull off. It is fake, yes, but only in the sense that it's not real magic. It's stage magic, and he makes a fine presentation of it.
At 1:22, I think the top half of the wire was perfectly straight and not wiggly, and the bottom was to give the illusion that he was somehow magically holding it up, meanwhile there was probably a small area for him to grip, separating the wiggly part from the straight part.
