Same here. 2002 Neon and everyone's telling me that it's crap. I have noisy lifters, the car vibrates a lot at idle, lacks power and gives me crappy mileage, but as you I've worked so much in it and know every bit of the car. I love it and might keep it until it dies... 103,000 miles on it and it won't stop.
its all about passion man....Anyone could just buy a new car to avoid any problems. But when hard work goes into something like this, and its your hard work, its a different feeling. Everyone tells me to sell my 02 neon, etc....but i worked on it so much, and know every bit of that car, its hard to let go for a small fortune because in my eyes the car is worth much more than in someone elses eyes because of all the time i put in the car. its been 2 years... no problems. 170,000 miles. runs new.
I have a plymouth neon with 170,000 thousand miles . I need to change the timing belt . When my transmision act up when it shifting i put a can of sea foam transmison additive and cleared the problem! This is a good motor , keep both oil change and it will last a long time !
Beautiful engine. Careful installing crankshaft timing gear and balancer pulley. Never ever use hammer of any kind on those for installation. Use the special install tools as shown in the manual to push them on without damaging the thrust bearing. Oh, and when inserting the piston and rod assembly use the protectors on the bolts to avoid scratching the crankshaft. Like the music.
Well done... I love the body and feel of the 90's models, I had a 95 and an 02 and did this to both. I can say the 95 with the dohc swap and acr transmission was fun to drive. I also manged to do coil over plugs after a while on it. These cars will run forever, get great gas mileage and they're extremely easy to work on. Nice job on the rebuild.
I agree, buying a new car is easy to fix problems...I own a 2012 scion tc, yes its fairly new but I ripped apart the engine and pieced it back together at least 4 time now...I modified it a little about to go boost so I agree with what you saying...mad respect for rebuilding a car man...hate people who talk shit about other rides when they own the newest model of anything.
Well Done, enjoyed the music too. Mine is 18 years old, over 100.000 miles. Other than replacing brakes and brake lines, valve cover seal. no other issues. No car payments. Ready for timing belt replacement.
And people say it's a bad idea to buy a decent car out of a junk yard. This video shows that with hard work, passion and effort, anything is possible. I'm actually looking for a 96 aqua/jade green or black Neon sedan, and this motivates me big time. This emerald green Neon looks very sharp. What year is it?
A little trick for getting the rockers on without binding is to put the engine a couple cam gear teeth before top dead center and the cam is mostly flat in a stabil position with minimum cam lobe pressure. Then tighten the shafts down in increments so that in no point in time does the rocker shaft bend at an extreme angle, I usually go over the rocker bolts 3x and on the 3rd time I torque them, any other way is almost a certain head strip.
I have a 2005 SXT neon i finally own and its at 419000+ miles and still going with no rebuild. I've put a lot of work into it. recently changed out the transmission fluid and after a few days my wife said the thing started reving really high when she tried to stop. after checking it out, it sounds bad like a vacuum but not sure wherre to start on this. maybe i just need to rebuild but i've nevver done that.
you know what? That makes alot of sense and because you actually put your blood sweat and tears in that car, i have alot of respect for u. I have even more respect for the pride you get out of working on that car. Just excuse that ignorant statement i made. You deffinatly put me in my place and im not ashamed to say it. ;)
Hi man ! You do it a really great job and very clean ! Respect! I also have a Chrysler neon 1999, and I'm thinking to do same job but it's a little hard to find one good stories for replacement parts. Who know some trusted store in UE , or Germany... ? Btw mine it's eating a 1 litre oil at 1000 km and I have to replace catalytic also. But I wil not change this car , 2.0 engine and on Autobahn she's eating 5,5 litres ( with automatic transmission) , and we talk about 20 years old car ! WOW
Waste of effort? Your comment makes no sense. Besides he really is being cost effective by doing this. If you can keep any older car going, why not. A cleaner, rebuilt car runs better. This project is worth it to him. What I don't understand are these fast n' furious kids who do this kind of work to any car just to trash it by beating the crap out of the engine anf transmission.
Someone , early was saying something about Honda, and another was asking what reason you have to rebuild this car.. Well for example my reason is that I also have 2 Chrysler Grand voyager and with this litle girl " ( neon ) I pulled one Grand with hand brake and 5 people inside on 5 degrees Street. Can a Toyota or Honda with 2.0 engine do this ?
I have an 00 w/248k on it and never had any other trouble other then maintenance issues, great little car. I have been thinking about doing a mild rebuild. Any suggestions?
I did a mild rebuild to mine at about 208K miles, with the engine in the car. Mine is a 2005 SXT. The rod bearings had hardly any signs of wear except some very light scuffing. I am looking to put another 200K on it. You can change the piston rings and rod bearings without removing the engine.
13 Years later.. I'm doing this to my 2004 R/T. I'm doing everything, entire front suspension, with the "k" frame getting replaced, entire rear suspension replaced, everything. I want this to last another 20 years.
@Tech925 well I spent 4k and one year to rebuild a 96 4x4 dakota bumper to bumper rebuilding everything. A neon would be cheaper and faster I think. Much less parts and RTs are getting rare.
I have a 05 neon and am on my second engine and transmission. Low oil pressure in the bottom end caused me to pull my motor at 118k. My auto trans got pulled at 145k do to hard shifting and slipping. Not so indestructible in my opinion.
+Jesse Koskenin That's because you've got a 2nd gen. The ECC DOHC motor used in 1st gen neons is fantastic. Now, they had SOHC engines for the 1st gen, but DOHC was an option, for the 2nd gen cars, it wasn't. come to think of it, if i'm remembering right, the SOHC offering for the 2nd gen neons was different as well.... for the 2.0L, you still could have the A588, but the lower displacement engine was different than the one they used on the 1st gens....
***** There were only 2 generations of Neon, the engines were not mostly identical, unless, of course, you're referring to them both being variants of the base Chrysler "Powertech" 2.0L motor. yes, they're variants, but the ECC, and A588 are actually substantially different. There was no DOHC option for 2nd gen.
***** 1995-1999 was 1st gen, and 1999-2005 was 2nd gen. There was a facelift to the Neon in 2003, but new bumpers and panels don't make it a new generation. Under the facelift, it was still the same car. '99 1st gens got the ECC and A588 motors, 2nd gens NEVER got the ECC motor, as it was not an option. And piston config, and head were not the only differences. as you pointed out yourself, the ECC produced more horsepowers than the A588. Yes, displacement was the same, as they were both based on the Chrysler "Powertech" 2.0L motor. so, by default, they're going to have a displacement of 2.0L. like it or not, they are significantly different motors...if they weren't, then what would be the point? lemme ask, do you HAVE a neon?
***** I can't speak to specific changes, as i own a 1st gen. However, according to Chrysler, there were only 2 generations of neon. I'm not going to say that there were no holdover motors, but it is a fact that the DOHC 2.0L motors used in the 1st gens were NOT an option on 2nd gen neons. The default motor for that generation was the SOHC A588 motor from the 1st gen, with the (still SOHC) "magnum" taking the place of the DOHC ECC, as the "more power" option. Maybe they used up existing motor stock in the very first 2nd gen cars to come off the line, instead of fitting them with the motor they were supposed to have...wouldn't be the first time they did something like that. There was a shortage of SOHC motors during 1st gen, so some neons that were supposed to only have SOHC, got an "upgrade" for free...neon production was kind of a mess, early on.. So perhaps you did get one that came off the line with an overstock motor, or maybe yours is a used one, that someone did a motor swap, i have no idea. And yes, while parts were interchangeable, the way in which a SOHC motor, and DOHC motor operate, mechanically, isn't exactly the same. I'm not a pro, but that doesn't mean i don't know anything.
Hello! I need some help. I.m from Romania and i purcaise a Chrysler neon 2 from 2001 and i have some problems with the tcu of the gear box. Can you please help me with an advice from where can i buy one piece of tcu for gerbox? Thank you in advance!

I have the same car color and all and want to do the same with mines. You did a excellent job I like how u cleaned the engine up as you were going along. How much roughly to do it?
wow dude that's awesome. i should prolly start thinking about doing this, my 96 plymouth neon is gettin to 200k, how long and how much did the engine take you? start to finish
If the timing belt fails, you have a very high probability of the engine needing at a minimum new valves and more likely new pistons. They are a interference engine

Just because it made in Illinois or Mexico doesn't mean it's not an American car (Dodge is an American company). I doubt it, but then again my car is stock inside and out until I can get more funds to build up the engine and turbocharge it, then good luck at all.
@@user-dn6qy1ou1f Exactly. I rebuilt the engine in my Neon and I"m not a trained mechanic. I learned as I went, and watched TH-cam videos for advice if I encountered any problems.
wiring is way easier to understand, swaps dont require cutting floor for shifter( retarded shift rod crap) neons have cable, motors drop in without modifications, trans all bolt up to all stratus, cirrus, breeze, caravan, sebring,pt cruiser 2.4 n/a and turbo. easy car to swap, and more fun than any honda i have driven or owned previously
I've been wanting to mention this for a while and this seems like a good an opportunity as any and may not even be relevant anymore. (would love to know how many Neons are still on the road).Neons will always wear out their head gasket beginning around 70k, just the nature of the design. Just don't let you mechanic do the old "Pry and Tuck" to replace it. There are plenty of stories of guys would save time buy not removing the intake or much else, unbolt the head bolts and then pry up the head. Yank the old gasket out and stuff the new one in. No cleaning and certainly damaging the gasket.Customers would come back 20k or 30k later with it blown again. The mechanics answer would be "Those darn neon Head Gaskets" then tell you the warranty was only for the part and not the labor.Gives ALL mechanics a bad name and the car too. This may be old news but I've never seen it mentioned here so I thought I would.
+mreinsmith my 99 had a headgasket at 162k, and my 95 had over 200k, no head gasket... but got motor replaced though due to hole in a piston. Both are awesome cars still.

Very nice video! I enjoyed watching it.
PS: Is it weird that I have no idea what they are saying in the first song, yet I really like it.
wow, i must say a first youtube set of comments that involves adults! theres hope left in the world! nice job on the engine.
On the bottom end where the oil pan goes. Did you insert the balance shaft assembly or you installed a windage tray
Dodge Neon engines do not have a balance shaft.
Great job dude!!!
We got a 2000 Neon just dying to have you work on her.
nice color and great job!!

Nice video. Can you please tell me what are the torque specs for the main and connecting rod caps and oil clearance if I use plastigage? thanks.
i allways play this video when i work on my neons
Thank's for the vid, Right now I'm rebuilding 96' Neon With 2L SOHC 420H motor...
Great work thumbs up
having the right tools and taking your time with every little thing is a must in my opinion.
How did he clean everything so well.... or did he just replace everything?
very entertaining video.
Muy buen video. Tengo q hacerle lo mismo al mio.
at 5:52, he starts torquing the Head bolts by the Tightening Sequence outlined in the Neon Factory Service Manual.
The rebuild was fantastic but the music was phenomenal ... who are they? Ich liebe das music dude.

my 00 has 298k

Now mine has 330k

how much you charge and where you live at .....I need it done on my 200o dodge neon
Faith in humanity restored
Also put Arp head studs in for more protection on the cylinder head
Super clean, I like it.
How did he remove the bed plate without removing the oil filter housing? last 3 I have done needed to be removed to get at a hidden bedplate bolt
good job

cuanto de torque llevan los tornillos de la cabeza del motor?

Hast gut gemacht hab auch ein aber 2 gen
tell me where you are ... to take my neon ply 95 ... I want to restore it.
algun libro o manual donde venga el apriete de torque y apretar los tornillos en orden
Nice work man, how long did it take you in real time?
Четко....охуенный гараж

WOW
Love this video.
Not hateing on you though man..Im a neon man myself in process of a DOHC Turbo Build
more like 10hrs in real time
Awesom vid man, well done!

dodge neon 98 bending valves timing belt break?

Nice!
new aging I enjoyed this video
Nice job but seems like a lot of effort for a neon. Any particular reason why you did it?

Cualquiera de esas cosas suerte

does anyone know what this song is called ?
