    Watching these type of videos makes me so excited to improve things to make it easier and also make me more productive! Just the revelation that if certain are hard and don't work for you you can change them instead of forcing yourself to change is such a revelation

      Two key phrases I've personally adopted into my everyday life that I think you may really appreciate and find meaning in... "Acknowledge the issue & address the issue at the point of the issue" and "Give yourself as much grace as you'd give another. Meet yourself where you're at. Go forth with intention, not guilt." Too often people can see there's an issue and they want to address it but they almost under/over think it. Ex: What use a shoe rack in your closet if you take your shoes off at the door? Put a shoe rack by the door and you're not tripping over shoes anymore & you've made space in the closet for the basket of laundry there never seems to be room for. Ex: The hamper is on the other side of the room but you like to take your socks off right before you climb into bed but leaving them on the floor just means you're greeting in the morning with a chore. Get a small wicker waste basket to use as a dirty sock hamper. Now, you're not picking up socks later when you really don't wanna be. Ex: You use the dining room table for sewing/cricut projects which you enjoy doing but you store all the supplies upstairs/across the house so you never actually use the supplies. Store them in the dining room hutch so you're encouraged to use them all year and put the fancy platter and napkins off in some corner since you only use those twice a year anyway.

    I have seen this vid of Jessica’s a while back, and really enjoyed watching how it plays with minimalism in contrast. Helpful to see all these concepts side-by-side! Thanks Robyn.

    This video was very helpful, thank you! And I know you mean well, but... not all of us have these "superpowers". I don't really hyperfocus, and I'm not particularly creative. I'm still diagnosed ADHD. It stings whenever this gets brought up because 1) it makes me feel worse about myself for obvious reasons and 2) it makes other people expect these qualities out of me (and others like me).

      I didn't see myself as a creative person! Still don't🤣 BUT a lot of times we conflate creative with artistic and they aren't the same thing. It can be the ways you have found to work around things or adaptations and solutions that are "out of the box". We don't think they are that creative, but a neurotypical person may not have came up with it. Of course I can't think of a specific example right now😅

    • @Chaotic_Pixie
      @Chaotic_Pixie ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I'd wager you're both... just not the way you expect them to manifest. Hyperfocus can also manifest as pervasive thoughts and creating worse-case-scenarios in your head. Just like hyperactivity can present as physical hyperactivity or racing mind that's constantly scrolling to-do lists. As for creativity... creativity doesn't have to mean artistic. Creativity is extremely applicable to problem solving which is just doing puzzles. Creativity is essential for very STEM centric fields like engineering, any of the theoretical maths or sciences, computer programming, the list goes on.
      I'm not sure there's an ADHDer out there who isn't good at puzzles. Many may not enjoy puzzles, but they're usually good at them. And puzzles aren't just the jigsaw variety. Puzzles are also interpersonal problem solving and crisis management (we tend to be good at this because adrenaline), logic puzzles like sudoku and math problems and engineering problems, as well as spatial awareness puzzles like Tetris and packing luggage and maximizing spaces and even playing platformer games.
      I bet you're way more creative than you realize.

    I have a laundry sorter in my bedroom. I used a label maker to label the different bags. Except instead of labelling the actual bags, I labelled the spots on the rod where the bags hang for what the different bags were for. I forget what the bags are for if I don't have that labelled.

  • @nicolejacques2563

    In terms of laundry hampers, I have found that point of performance is key. I have separate hampers for myself, my husband, my two kids share one, and we have two in the laundry room, one for microfiber items that can’t be washed with fuzzy stuff and the other for cloth napkins and towels. My kids’ hamper is directly outside their bedrooms and very close to their bathroom; they have to walk by it to go anywhere else in the house. My hamper is in a spot I can easily find in the dark (directly to the right of my dresser) because most of the time I toss my clothes in there when it is dark out. My husband’s used to be next to mine - he had to walk past it to get to his “side” of the room - but he kept leaving his clothes all over the floor next to his side of the bed. In a fit of frustration one day, I moved his hamper to the spot where he dropped all of his clothes, and now they are almost always likely to make it into the hamper.
    Washing our clothes by person instead of color has allowed me to stay on top of laundry better because certain family members go through clothes much faster than others, so I can be sure that I know which person is getting low on clothes and prioritize their laundry.
    I love your video and Jessica’s video. And I wanted to thank you for drawing attention to the fact that neurodivergent folks need to organize their home differently than neurotypical people do.

      Having this exact same problem. I just wrote on my list to watch some vids and look up recipes. It seems like a great tool sitting and taking up space in my kitchen. It’s almost like I force myself to do things the hard way, like watching mac n cheese boil over when it has come out perfect in the IP when I think to use it. Creating a new habit with adhd is the HARDEST!! Just to even remember I have a tool behind a closed door!!

    Oh snap will definitely save up for an on demand hot water kettle because I always forget that I cooked water until it cooled of again because I got distracted. And as a result I often just don't make tea in general, this looks like a great product!

  • @glee_again2594

    As someone with ADD, in decluttering and organizing, I find sorting things by “subject/theme” the starting point to then be able to take a step to declutter even more or to list and tape in or on the box what is in it.
    Also we use our Keurig to keep hot water and just use the hot water to make tea/hot chocolate in/from their bags. No need to use k-cups.
    I also keep mine cleaned (I know those who don’t, contaminants are gross!)

  • @Chaotic_Pixie
    @Chaotic_Pixie ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I just want to add a few comments:
    First, you are the only sane, self-proclaimed minimalist I've found on the internet. I've been in a desperate hunt to find motivating videos to keep me going on my cleaning and it is been ridiculously hard. Hearing people talking about "decluttering" things they actually like, use, and enjoy in the name of minimalism is horrifying. So thank you. THANK YOU for saying that the purpose of looking pretty is a valid purpose!
    Most important thing I need to say.
    Saying "superpowers" isn't really a helpful outlook for a few reasons. 1) Not everyone with ADHD struggles with hyperfocus or is extremely creative in the conventional way. Some people may hyperfocus on negative thoughts or worst-case scenario outcomes. Many people who are ADHD aren't artistically inclined in the traditional sense but may be extremely good with spatial awareness or numbers. One thing that most ADHDers have in common is being good at, if not necessarily enjoying, puzzles. 2. Hyperfocus can be extremely damaging. Many females in particular are diagnosed with EDs instead of the underlying cause which is ADHD so even if the ED is treated, what caused it isn't and relapse is almost inevitable. They've found when you treat the underlying ND (usually ADHD, ASD, or OCD), the ED naturally begins to correct itself, whether its an undereating/overeating/compulsive eating behaviors that are the problem. Hyperfocus can also be incredibly damaging if you also have other conditions. Pair ADHD hyperfocus with Bipolar and you get hyperfocus induced mania. Pair ADHD hyperfocus with ASD perseverations and you can have a particularly toxic combo that can lead to mental breakdown if it doesn't lead to physical breakdown first from lack of water or food. And yes, ADHDers are known to binge drink because during a hyperfixation, we may forget to not only eat, but also hydrate. That's why there's an app to remind you to drink water, and it does nothing else.
    Perhaps most helpful thing I want to say.
    Having multiples can be really impactful for ADHDers. Keeping phone/watch/tablet chargers at key points throughout the house really helps with managing battery life. A charger in the bedroom (across the room is fine if you're prone to scrolling in bed), at the desk, and at your relaxation station are key, as well as one in the car. I have 2 watch chargers, 2 ipad chargers, and 4 phone chargers plus a backup of each in my travel pouch. This means I'm never going to misplace any of them and when I travel, if I leave one or all behind, I'm not borked when I get home. This logic applies to lots of things. I have two bathrooms, so I have two sets of cleaning supplies for example. If I had 2 floors, I'd have 2 vacuum cleaners because I can't be arsed to carry such a heavy thing up and down the steps constantly. I'd opt not to vacuum. I thought all this might be helpful for your spouse and his.. charging issues.
    My gut-reaction defensive self speaking up.
    Baskets and bins are amazing... as long as they're accurately labeled and/or they're clear/see-thru. I doubt any ADHDer or most men for that matter, will organize their cord pile. The important thing is, its just one cord pile. It isn't 8 throughout the house. That right there is the win. Also, F'it Buckets are amazing! Anyone with 2 floors should have one for the stairs for anything going upstairs and they are THE BEST cleaning hack ever. If it doesn't belong in the room you're cleaning, it goes in the bucket. When you're done with that room, deliver those items to their specific rooms *but do not put them away* and move onto the next room and repeat the process except this time and each time henceforth, if you find items that go in a previously cleaned area, DO put them away. Because the space is already cleaned, you're less likely to get distracted.

    I pretty much through everything in on cold so I don't have to sort lol. I like idea of using gloves to wash dishes because I also find it absolutely disgusting and I will put it off and hope my husband gets to it! I think we need to try the Marie kondo method of folding clothes because we use one dresser and we're either trying to fit them all in or he just doesn't put his clothes away and they sit on top of the dresser. I started to use a rotating shirt system. I just wear the next one on top and then when I've done laundry I put them on the bottom of the pile. On my days off I'll choose a shirt really want to wear and that has made it so much easier!

      I don’t fold anything and don’t own a dresser.
      If I did, I would have to open the drawers to put it away, which means it was in a pile or I would forget what’s in there. I called these little things roadblocks. The first thing I do when I move into a new house just takeoff all of the cabinet doors up top, remove a lot of the doors in the house, including the master bathroom door and I don’t use a lot of baby gates if I can get away with it because they will just be roadblocks to me.
      I hang all of my clothes in the closet. That way I can see them, they don’t get lost, and I don’t have to open the drawer to put them away.
      And yes, I even hang my unmentionables. I have laundry bags hung and labeled that I hang or I will put some on like scarf hangers.

    I would have to say I prefer Jessica's style of Teapot specifically for ADHD. While yours is nice for on demand hot water, I would still have to put the teabag in the hot water and wait for it to steep. Then I either have to sit there and stare at that mug until it's done steeping (not easy with ADHD) or walk away and forget I made tea all together and come back to a cold mug. I need the colored lights to catch my attention and remind me I made tea. Plus it steeps while it boils, so all the steps are already done in the process of just making the tea. Yours would be great however for hot chocolate or instant coffee though. But, I don't really drink those.
