    I'm really sad wish didn't go full 2D. Between it being an anniversary film, the story centering around the wishing star from old movies, and the company expressing interest in possibly doing 2D again, this was the perfect chance for it.

    I remember having a theory about Elemental, which is that the whole idea of “elements don’t mix” is less about prejudice and possibly more about how commonality doesn’t really mean you belong together. Considering the main characters are literally fire and water, that does result in steam, but it also results in one of them disappearing. Perhaps the parents do actually say this out of concern that their daughter might end up hurt, and it would be interesting if the actual moral was that just because Ember and Wade can be friends doesn’t really mean they’re made for each other. They just like having each other‘s company.

      I saw a comment on a different video (probably the YMS reaction vid) that the movie would probably work a lot better if Ember and Wade were two elements on the periodic table that would actually make something dangerous if they mixed, like if they were chlorine and bromine or something. Then the movie could be about how two people can love each other, but not necessarily be good for each other.
      As it is though, I feel like I can already predict the entire synopsis of this movie. "Romeo and Juliet with a touch of Strange World" is the best way to describe it

    Okay, I've said it once, I'll say it agan: Wreck It Ralph does NOT have a twist villain. King Candy is clearly the antogonist right from the beginning, we're clued in directly almost immediately after meeting him, and his behavior throughout the movie does not change; he has a consistent personality. The only twist is WHO he actually is, not the fact that he's a villain, as in is the case with other twist villains.

    • @aff77141
      @aff77141 ปีที่แล้ว +57

      Y.... Yeah... That's... What a twist villain is SUPPOSED to be. Just because the other DISNEY twist villains are shitty doesn't mean he isn't one, it's not a dump on wreck it ralph it's just a trope name

    • @morrisbeauregard286
      @morrisbeauregard286 ปีที่แล้ว +134

      @Ath King Candy is not a "twist villain." The trope everyone is talking about with Disney's modern "twist villains" is the "Evil All Along" trope. A villain with a twist is not the same thing as a twist villain. King Candy being Turbo is just a regular reveal. The fact that he is evil is not hidden, which means that he isn't a "twist villain." He's just a villain, and there's a later reveal about him.

    • @20000dino
      @20000dino ปีที่แล้ว +41

      I mean, you're still not really right. King Candy is a peculiar case. He isn’t a "twist villain" (in the vein of more modern examples), but he is undoubtedly a villain with a twist. He is clearly an antagonist from the beginning - but, before the twist, it’s hard to imagine him as the film’s "true antagonist”, the "final boss" (if they truly even intended on successfully delivering a classical grand climax akin to older Disney films, that is). We mostly just see him as a smaller antagonist until the reveal.
      The twist isn’t that he’s a villain, it’s that he is THE villain. Thus, calling him a "twist villain" still isn't at all off - it's just that the Disney films that came afterwards completely ruined the reputation of that character trope with plenty of poorly-executed and uninspired examples. It's not like modern Disney invented the twist villain - it's a classical trope that can find its way into narratives in various forms.

    • @wwpjd28
      @wwpjd28 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I agree. Still, this leaves Disney with just 2 films with villains (3 if you count Tamatoa's one scene in Moana) in 13 years. That is not a very good villain rate for sure. So just the presence of a villain is a note. But King Candy is definitely an obvious and delightful villain from the beginning with a fun motivation that gets more interesting as his backstory is revealed. Disney as a brand is practically built on villains (alongside incredible animation and music) though and the fact that they have had 2 (and Gothel was not very good either) since 2010 is pretty bad.

    • @morrisbeauregard286
      @morrisbeauregard286 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @CJ Cable Oh sure, totally. I'm not defending their villain rate. I miss the days of classic bombastic villains. I just don't like that people always lump Wreck It Ralph in with all the other movies that do this trope to death. Though I'm surprised you don't like Gothel. I thought she worked pretty well for that story.

    I think my personal issue with Wish's art direction is, it feels like several different art styles mashed together into one in an inconsistent way. And it's not only with the visual appearance, but with the way characters move as well. Valentino the goat has exaggerated facial expressions and an angular design reminiscent of Djali from Hunchback of Notre Dame, but Asha's design is smoother, more realistic, closer to other CGI princesses. And the star doesn't even look like a Disney character, it looks more like something out of Adventure Time.

    My issues with Elemental can be mostly summed up with it's catch phrase. "Elements do not mix". In Zootopia they were separated mostly due to preference and convenience, but in elemental they are separated by necessity. The trailer shows a fire person bumping into a plant person and burning them up. Those issues aren't easily overcome and playing them off as trivial feels cheep.
    There's also the entire "why do you let anyone tell you what to do" narrative. It is aggressively irreverent of everything that came before. Why don't you walk in the street or drink bleach? Sometimes there's a good reason people tell you not to do things. Taking it as gospel without thinking isn't good, but neither is rejecting it out of hand. It seems to be saying 'your parents are stupid, don't listen to them' and that rubs me the wrong way. If it was 'your parents can be wrong and you should think for yourself' that would be another thing entirely.

    • @MoRPho151
      @MoRPho151 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      Recently they changed it to water and fire cannot mix, I feel that it makes more sense. And Wade says that to the protagonist because she is an adult woman and she doesn’t go outside of where they live only because her dad forbids her. I think that is a good point, when you grow up you can go out and go everywhere you want if you are responsible and you are already a mature person that knows how to discern good from bad. If she was a teenager or too young I would see what you said but I feel that it is very implied that she is a full grown adult woman.
      And I can tell you that there are parents that still tell their daughters what they can and can’t do in their 25’s or 30’s and it is not related to safety, is control or excessive protection.
      What I find weird is that the analogy of different people mixing don’t work so well in this setting. Because there are real motives why people can’t mix, fire burns earth, water puts out fire etc… In our real life mixing with other people of different ethnicities and cultures is not that hard if you get rid of the prejudice. Because we are mostly the same, we are not made of different substances that interact negatively.

    As far as Wish goes, probably the one of the three I'm most intrigued by, and I think the trailer being vague helped that. Teenage Kraken looks the most promising out of all 3 trailers, one reason I say this is because the trailer for Puss in Boots: The Last Wish felt exactly like the movie did when I saw it in theaters. The story, the characters, the visuals, everything felt properly advertised in comparison to the actual movie. I’m not saying there’s any guarantee that Teenage Kraken will be the next awesome Dreamworks movie, but with the trailer itself and how Puss in Boots: The Last Wish was advertised, it seems likely that Teenage Kraken will do well, especially in comparison to Disney’s The Little Mermaid remake that 90% of critics and audiences aren’t excited for from its trailer.

    I have a theory with Teenage Kraken that the whole part where Chelsea (mermaid girl) says shes is a Kraken hiding as a human is more of a hallucination in Ruby's mind, and she is actually hiding, but from what Chelsea sees in Ruby's mind she isn't hiding. Especially with the blurring in the shot, and how no one reacts to this, it doesn't feel like this actually happened in the world of Teenage Kraken and more happened in Ruby's mind, or at least Ruby's appearance happened in her mind. We will see though.

    Trailer for “elemental” and when I did, I INSTANTLY knew what the movie was going to be about. I figured it when as soon as I heard the line their rule is “stick to your own kind” …. doesn’t THAT tell you what the movie’s morale is going to be? I’m not saying that it’s going to be bad but if they are going to make the morale THAT obvious it’s not much fun, I guess other Disney movies had pretty obvious message too, but they usually didn’t more or less spell it out in the trailer! Also, the animation look like it was unfished, at least for the water guy, but maybe that cause animating water is hard for CGI or something especially if it’s a figure. “Kraken” seems a little funner, like maybe not good but at least they are having fun with it and it looks like we’re are finally going to have a movie with a fun villain and not just a conflict with another character. “Wish” seems better than “elemental” at least I couldn’t tell what the morale what from seeing the trailer but not great…more standard Disney good where its entertaining but that’s about it.
    Still not sure if I’m going to see any of these, the Disney ones will be easer as I have Disney + and they will at least eventually come out on that kraken I’m still going to wait till it’s on demand or something.

    Water people: travel through pipes. We saw Wade do that, but it was probably unintentional
    Disney Wish: I know that Disney wanted to stylize but I don't think it was worth it here as it looks more like for a tv show. And my theory for the villain is that he's going to be like Maxwell Lord from Wonder Woman 1984: he's abusing magic unaware that it works like "The Monkey's Paw"

    16:05 As someone who has been to both Portugal and Spain, this doesn't look like the Iberian peninsula at all. Unless this takes place or is inspired by the past when the Moors invaded, this is a completely inaccurate setting. Disney should stick to making fantasy lands instead of historical settings.

    • @XanderVJ
      @XanderVJ ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh, it definitely looks like the Iberian Peninsula. Just a very specific part/time period of it. To be specific, this seems to be inspired by Moor-occupied Spain circa the 14th-15th century. The architecture shown in the trailer can still easily be found in many parts of Andalusia (Southern Spain), and they come from that time period. Specially the city of Granada in general, and the Alhambra in particular, seem to have been a large source of inspiration.
      The characters on the other hand...
      I mean, it's still supposed to be a fantasy kingdom, but I can imagine things will get... busy... when release date approaches.

    I'm kinda meh about Elemental but I am looking forward to Teenage Kraken and Wish, I don't get the hate about Wish's art style as when I first saw the teaser it was something I immediately loved about it, it's something unique and I think it looks pretty good

    Generational trauma plots are weird especially with movies that have, in theory, a different generational demographic target. Simply put the "generational trauma" that the creators of the movie experienced and understand is not the same as the audience will have and make it difficult for an audience to form a connection.

    I actually really like the evil version of Ariel for teenage kraken because it is basically if the little mermaid was more accurate to all the ancient myths about mermaids and sirens. Until stuff like the little mermaid changed their image, mermaids were just like sirens. Beautiful half fish half women creatures that sang songs and used their beauty to lure men to their death.

    Elemental looks like a really by the numbers and predictable plot.
    Ruby Gillman Teenage Kraken looks kind of interesting, and I find the main character to have a cute design
    This is my first time hearing about Wish
    Btw, after bringing up the "fat loser tries king fu"
    Made me think of Beverley Hills Ninja
    And Adam Sandler singing the Chris Farley song

    I don't think it's the goat who looks wrong in Wish. It looks like the other characters. It's human who looks out of place. She just looks like a 3D model, while the other characters look like 2D characters. They move like 2D animation.
    That's where I see the comparison with Paperman. They pulled off making the humans look like cartoons, and not 3D models. They knew gradients were a bad idea.

    I remember when the trailer for Coco came out, it looked like one giant Mexican stereotype and I wasn't interested. Then a Mexican friend of mine saw Coco and said that while he agreed with my opinion of the trailer, the movie itself was actually very culturally accurate. He was right. I no longer put any stock in trailers anymore.

    Of the three, the only one I've actually heard of is Elemental.
    Looking at them all here, I think Teenage Kraken is the one I'll keep tabs on. I actually really like Ruby's design. Let's see what happens.

    Here's some of my thoughts of these three films.
    1.) Elemental -Thought the movie will be so boring by its premise, but the second trailer make it look more interesting? I might check this one out.
    2.) Teenage Kraken -Looks fun as hell. The trailer showed a bit too much, but regardless, I'm excited for this one.
    3.) Wish -Hasn't watch the full trailer, but seeing some of it, it looks kinda meh for me. Hope it does well enough though.

    I'm Spanish. If you had told me years ago, I'd have been exited about a Spanish Disney princess. But now, especially after seeing what they did to South East Asians with Raya, I look at Wish with nothing but fear: "OMG, please, don't mess it up...". Not to mention Disney learnt nothing from the terribly offensive, racist and insulting short Ferdinand of 1938, because they haven't put one of their famous "outdated cultural references" tags. Also, what kind of name is Asha for a Spanish girl? Or, if this is supposed to be during the Al-Andalus era, Asha doesn't even sound Arabic (the Ummayads didn't come from Africa, they came from the Middle East). Why not calling her Azahara? That would have been a better choice. Besides, she doesn't even look Spanish or Arabic, by any means. Heck, Jasmine looked at least close to an Arabic woman (despite her terrible choice for an outfit). *sigh* Let's just hope Wish's story is good...

      @@My-mind_me. At first watch nothing. At second watch, plotwise, the message about trust is delivered very poorly. Representation-wise, I've seen an Indonesian girl's video about many cultural aspects it gets wrong, and that she doesn't feel South East Asians who live in SEA were the actual target demographic of the film.

    I am the most excited for Wish because we actually see a villain and I hope they stick to being the actual villain. Plus I loved Coco and Enchanto's style and themes of stars and wishes.
    Teenage Kraken i'm also interested in, not as a best seller like Puss in Booth just a cute teen movie flick that makes fun of Disney like Shrek did.
    Elemental is pretty cliche but honestly I love how the visual looks and aside from Toy story 4 we don't have an original Pixar film that focuses on romance also as someone who has generational trauma I should probably take a hint from the recent Pixar movies and work on healing it.

    Just wanted to correct you on the Bebe's Kids trailer-the actual full trailer says "it's animation... with an attitude", hence why it sounds like there should be something after "it's animation" in the inflection-because there is.

    I'm pretty with you, moreso than usual.
    I didn't have the same negative reaction so many people had to these trailers, and am also cautiously positive because I'm pretty good at reading between the lines with trailers, but I can't blame others for not having that figured out.
    Trailers are made to appeal to the general public and get interest from people otherwise uninterested, and the only one that gave people enough to go on gave too much away. I know it wasn't included in this particular discussion, but I feel the latest Spiderverse trailer also falls under "Showed too much."
    I will say that insofar as Wish goes, I'm going back and forth on the art style. It's pretty, and really nice to see Disney attempt, but it somehow feels as though something is missing, it feels just a touch flat.
    But I'm open to seeing more, and I'm glad that all three of these films have completely different visual styles.
