Hello Friends,
On this episode I make way for Whangārei with an easy motor sail in light winds. Approaching the channel to the large basin that is Whangārei I test out the current and find myself fighting it for almost half an hour to get into an anchorage with more protection.
Make sure you stay tuned until the end of the episode if you would like to hear me talk about how I read the landscape of an anchorage to decide where I want to drop the hook.

Thankyou from all us Kiwis for the generous and heartfelt compliments that you bestow on Aotearoa.
I absolutely love it here and am grateful to be able to visit and share its beauty with the world 🙏🏻
Hi imet you in Pack n Save Whangarei. I've done just that same trip. Battled the current getting into Uquarts Bay, I had fowled my prop with kelp, what a struggle... pinched a mooring as a storm was coming. ALMOST was smashed by a big French cat, I hailed him as he was dragging and penduluming in 40 to 50 knots... he just shrugged and went below, I yelled some more and unhitched from the mooring. His wife came out and screamed at him in French. French. He didn't look at me as he motored off. All good fun. 😂
Oh yikes !!! That sounds like a terrifying experience!! I have a friend in LA who had just set his anchor once and was still sitting on the bow while another boat was dragging past him slowly… a dude on that bow of that boat smuggly said “are you aware that you are dragging? My buddy said “bro, you are dragging” the looked around and yell “shit” and ran back to the helm 😂
Been with you for ages bro. Please dont change that calm peaceful music track you start your vids with. Grown to really enjoy kickin off to it.
Happy days ! another vid from James and Triteia , Always put a big ol grin on my face when I see you posted , thanks for bringing us along !
🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
I really dig the bucket hat. 😂. Beautiful anchorages you’re showing in this one. ❤
Thank you James for taking us on this one. Absolutely stunning. Enjoying from central Texas
Everything about the way u sail, notes the nuances of the tricky bits sailing in Nz
Many will find this super duper useful
Another nice episode. Your voice has a calming effect.
Amazing video as always! Thanks for sharing your approach to anchoring for storm conditions, some really great points! Keep up your adventures
Education, enlightenment and entertainment all in one video. You keep knocking it out of the park James!
Engine sounds good!!!
Great show....
Pretty countryside!
lol never been sailing but I’ve been obsessed with your videos, safe travels 🤙🏽
I don’t want this going to your head, but you’re kind of a legend!
Just out here living my best life 🙏🏻 I am still shocked I managed to pull it off
Pronounced Ur-kat. Scots name. Curious about your time in Shetland. Im from Glasgow originally. Been watching for months now man. Love it. Thank you.
Urquhart, I mean. Sounds more like Uhr-kit. Uh as in Ug ug caveman speak.
Engine sounds good
Love the explanation of geographic features on anchorages. Learn so much more on your channel about sailing than a lot of others. Keep crushing it🔥
Wow James you hit a great patch of weather over your series of latest videos, gets a bit wet up that way :)
Great video James! Beautiful views as always traveling in/around NZ. Glad you were able to make it into the Urquharts Bay anchorage eventually despite the oncoming tide. Also enjoyed the information about choosing where to anchor, definitely helpful to be able to read the land. Thanks for sharing! May fair winds be with you my friend!🌬⛵
Good to see you've loaded the engine up, a refurbed diesel needs it, now you have confidence in it.
I used to live in little Munroe bay just before taurakura definitely beautiful place.
Beautiful place to be the waters are amazing
Awesome information, thank you James. The water looks especially calm, and the sky is magically blue. I hope the coming storm is only mild, anchor well.
🙂👍 Thank you for another cool episode. Hope you weathered the storm ok. 🌏
Excellent!
Great location and the information you've presented about anchorage was very educational..
I also enjoy your sharing of details concerning strong water currents in the ever-changing cartography.. Also,
Your explanations about the purchasing of a proper location to Dawn.
I appreciate your concerns and how you express attention to detail..
I'm sure I'll learn much much, much more by observing..
Yep you don't try to fight that current at the Whang. heads, my son Alex and I tried in his 26ft Raven ...were stationary for a couple of hours ....and then broke the gearbox!! Thanks to Marsden Cove marina for all their help :) (glad you liked Tutukaka, its our 2nd home and happy place)
Thank you for all your uploading, i almost watched all your Videos! I not a Sailor yet, but Will be a sailor and a boat owner in the near future! I just love to Watch and hear about your trips, and the way you deal with whatever comes your way😊 it really gives encouragement to start this new life 💪
I watched soooo many videos before I had my own boat, knowledge is power 💪🏻⛵️
Thanks sailor James!
The tropics were beautiful but there's something about New Zealand that's magical and welcoming.
Thanks for the where- to- anchor info...I was wondering about that as you entered that area.
Totally dig the new hat.
I did the same thing with that current, strongest one I’ve experienced up here, rivals the ones around Cook Strait. A big motor launch passed me by standing further out so I wonder if local knowledge has less flow in the deeper water there for some reason. I had wished I did anchor at smugglers for a few hrs as I had originally planned. Have anchored there before and it is quite good.
I know this is sailing and all but a question? Do you ever catch and cook? That would be awesome to see
Love the hat
Just wondered James what make is your wind vane steering system? Love your videos and and relaxed narration
It’s a hydrovane
Thumbs up! 😊
‘Ana’ up.
‘Kata’ down.
The ‘venturi’ effect.
(Ex pilot here) 👍🏻
I learn alot watching your videos, very scenic and helpful tips, I'm in the great lakes, certainly not an ocean but it all relates in a way ☠️✌️
YOU ARE ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL 😍
THESE VIEWS OF NEW ZEALAND YOU SHOW ME
ARE CRAZY GORGEOUS ❤️
I LOVE THE VISUAL OF THE MAPS WITH YOUR VESSELS COURSE, AND THE INFORMATION ON TIDES, AND HOW YOU AQUIRE ALL THE ACCURATE INFORMATION OF HOW FAST THE WATER CURRENT IS MOVING IN OR OUT OF A PASS, AND HOW FAST YOUR ENGINE IS MOVING TRITAEA.
YOUR KNOWLEDGE OF WHAT TO ANTICIPATE WITH ANCHORING, THE WIND DIRECTION, AND TIMING OF STORMS IS SO CRITICAL AND YOU MASTER THE ART OF " LANDING" IN SUCH SECURITY AND PEACEFUL WATERS
CAPTAIN JAMES...I LEARN SO MUCH FROM YOUR ADVENTURES AND KNOWLEDGE
I HOPE YOU KNOW HOW MUCH OF AN INSPIRATION YOU ARE TO ME AND SO MANY OTHER PEOPLE WHO WANT TO LIVE LIFE TO THE FULLEST IN A RESPONSIBLE WAY
I LOVE YOU 🌈🌎😍❤️💎🛡️
Thank you James😂❤
FWIW I have some Urquharts in my distant family tree; they're a Highland Scottish clan. There is an Urquhart Castle on Loch Ness.
Very interesting! I sailed past that castle in 2014 when we transited the Caledonian Canal and Loch Ness, never put the two together! Thanks for mentioning it!
Hope ur gonna visit the poor knight’s reserve
Glad your clear of Maui with the nightmare fire they had there! Those poor people! Cheers🍻
Very sad
Always appreciate your break down of things..Sailed a bit as a kid and helped my Dad out who was either sport or commercial fishing during my formative years.
So always gain a bit of practical sailing information from your videos.. glad the engine is working well ..sounds good from here.🤓
Thanks 🙏🏻
God bless you James for sharing you adventure will all of us. I can see you're a kindhearted soul. (tip, the music is a bit loud in the mix, much louder than your voice)
How do you potty aboard. Do you have a head and how do you deal with waste?
Yes I have a head.
James you and Triteia are the best part of my day. Keep up the great work and fair winds to ya🫡
Hi James,
Been following your travels for a while. Need a home cook meal, wash ya clothes, crash on the couch? Let me know. I am in central Auckland looking over the Auck harbour bridge.
Kiwi hospitality.
Thanks 🙏🏻
115K. Rolling right along
😊😊😊😊😊😊😊
So when are you going to have 2nd breakfast in Hobbiton? That’s half the reason I want to sail to NZ someday! 😂
😂😂😂 the Mecca of second breakfast
Man have you been to Greenland ? One of ur videos
Yes I have been to Greenland but not on Triteia, the “Viking Route” films will be out in January of that adventure
@@SailorJames thanks man
Love the channel n the journeys
Urquharts Bay is pronounced Erkhearts . . . .
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤ BEAUTIFUL
Classic
My mothers maiden name is Urquhart
We pronounce it Erkat or Erkhart
I have always wanted to sail around the world how is a person able to do that without working or how do you keep doing that what kind of work does one do when sailing around the world?
TH-cam has been my full time job since June 2021. I had like $1000 in savings when I left Los Angeles in August of 2021. I usually live under anchor so my living expenses are very minimal
The currents in the entrance to Whangarei Harbour are not to be taken lightly. The stretch between the Frenchman, the island just past Busby point, and Urquharts Bay isn't known as: 'The Mad Mile' for nothing. When winds oppose tide there... nasty stretch. I had a 10 tonne floating footpath which got spun a full 360 in an eddy off Aubrey island on an incoming tide once - just as well no one else was beside me as it overpowered my engine
Are you going to antarctica? Would you be able to be make it without being "_turned around_"
I am guessing this is some absurd flat errffer nonsense
@@SailorJames So that's a no?
@@SailorJamesYes little man.
The earth is flat. Ellipsoid.
Hows the clotshot.
Sounds like you have brain fog from the tests.
Its for your kind.
@@jamesflake6601Hes mentality unstable by the sounds.
Just a loanly scab
James Ocean looks so SLICK
Dude! where'd you get the hat? I want one!🤨

I love your videos, but the new chooses for music isn't so great...
I will continue to use whatever music I see fit 🤷🏼♂️
@@SailorJames I didn't mean any disrespect. You're doing great with your videos as clearly shown by your subscriber count. Congrats on finding a great place for yourself in this big world. Fair winds.
