One day in 2015 I was walking down coney Island boardwalk in NYC. I heard music playing and kept walking closer and what do I see? Smokey Robinson on a outdoor stage singing all his hits with no security, no band just a microphone and a crowd of people singing. I couldn't believe what I was watching. I was so moved and impressed by the level of love her has for the music. Smokey is one of the last Goats we have in this buisness.
Similar story with my grandfather. He was born near Biloxi, MS in 1894. He ran away from home at 12 around 1906. He went west. He eventually joined the navy and ended up in NYC. I think this story was very common during the Jim Crow Era.

I can relate to Smokey’s experiences. Every year for about 2-3 months we would have our electricity or gas turned off kerosene heaters with a large pot of water on top was our washbasin. I knew we were poor only when my friends wanted to come over. I still think about those days.
It’s completely immoral how utilities can just be shut off and people are expected to live wihout heat, water and/or electricity in America, imo. .... especially with how expensive utilities are and given how much utility companies make and have always made. I’m pretty sure the recent pandemic was the longest time some people have ever had utilities on continually and that was only because they couldn’t be turned off. But anyway... 😞I’m so glad you survived those times and that you and your family were able to come through them. You have endured and are able to tell it. Blessings to you.

I had an elder second told me of how her brother got into a fight with a white kid his age for beating on his sister. When the family got wind that there was a mob of people looking him. He had to hide in an abandoned house for some days as they were still looking for him. Had to stowaway on a train headed out to Texas. Man those times were brutal when people were expected to get hanged after standing up for themselves or of their own.
My grandfather had a similar situation. My grandfather beat a white deputy that disrespected my grandmother. That was easily common in the 1940's. The deputy was the son of the police chief in there inTexas. My grandfather wasn't from Texas. The police were familiar with my grandmother's family, so they knew where to find them. So, with that in mind, both my grandmother and my grandfather had to pack up immediately, and leave Texas. My father went back there in the early 2000's, and they were still talking about that some 50 plus years later.
Then these educated blk folks like" Rice, Thomas," wanted blk folks to leave the pass behind so white folks(children) don't feel oppress to what their ancestors treated blks then and now!...

53 cents was a lot for a kid back then, the equivalent of about $16 now. His dad worked hard for it only to have it continually taken away. He couldn’t even ask for any adult protection since no Black adult could even protect him from a white child. This is beyond sad. And to think - the worst injury of it all. was his own mother never saw him again. This, over something that was not his fault. When you grow up poor in the hood, in a big family , there is a closeness and love, so you don’t realize you are poor until you leave. That’s very true, Smokey said it well…my hood was the south Bronx, my family was 8 people in a 2 bedroom apartment in one of the toughest projects in New York City, but we had each other and our parents raised us rich in decency , so I didn’t realize we were poor until I left .
I'm his cousin. He is my Grandfather's, Brother's Son. Funny, it's in the blood. I sing and write music too. Also, we've tried reaching out and I met him once. When we told him about intricate parts of his childhood, he looked like he'd seen a ghost

I'm 75 years old. In my teenage days Smokey was the man. All one had to do was listen to the lines he was laying down in his songs and man you could learn how to rap to the girls. My all time favorite Smokey song was/is/will be: The Love I Saw In You Was Just A Mirage. Just listen to the words from that song, they tell the story of love, heartache and heartbreak. Smokey is the greatest song writer ever, period.
This is a common story, especially in the Jim Crow South. My grandad had to flee Mississippi in the 1950s in the middle of the night after he beat up a white man in self-defense.
My GMA passed 3 years ago she was about to be 94 she was the second youngest of 6 her father came over on one of the last slave ships. She never talked about him. I wish I could've heard some of the things she knew about him. My mama was born in 1954 in Ga, her oldest sister is Smokey's age so talking to her and her siblings is like living through history. She actually recently told me my pops used to serve to smokey and his crew when they used to come to town 🤣.
My great grandmother passed 30 years ago and her parents were slaves the first 10 years of their lives she had some amazing stories about Slavery and Jim Crow, ADOS we are special people

The deputy was the son of the police chief in there inTexas. My grandfather wasn't from Texas. The police were familiar with my grandmother's family, so they knew where to find them. So, with that in mind, both my grandmother and my grandfather had to pack up immediately, and leave Texas. My father went back there in the early 2000's, and they were still talking about that some 50 plus years later.
Then these educated blk folks like" Rice, Thomas," wanted blk folks to leave the pass behind so white folks(children) don't feel oppress to what their ancestors treated blks then and now!...

53 cents was a lot for a kid back then, the equivalent of about $16 now. His dad worked hard for it only to have it continually taken away. He couldn’t even ask for any adult protection since no Black adult could even protect him from a white child. This is beyond sad. And to think - the worst injury of it all. was his own mother never saw him again. This, over something that was not his fault.
He could have kílled that kid by stabbing him in the leg and he would have been kïlled for it. So many stories like this. What a legacy.
Sadly there are many stories like that for Black Americans of a certain generation.

When you grow up poor in the hood, in a big family , there is a closeness and love, so you don’t realize you are poor until you leave. That’s very true, Smokey said it well…my hood was the south Bronx, my family was 8 people in a 2 bedroom apartment in one of the toughest projects in New York City, but we had each other and our parents raised us rich in decency , so I didn’t realize we were poor until I left .

Thanks for this interview Vlad.I have an interview with Smokey on a show called Centerstage.He was about 77yrs old then and I was and still am amazed at how sharp his mind and voice are.This is one of our few true musical geniuses left ( Stevie Wonder is the other). A much needed interview 💐

I'm 75 years old. In my teenage days Smokey was the man. All one had to do was listen to the lines he was laying down in his songs and man you could learn how to rap to the girls. My all time favorite Smokey song was/is/will be: The Love I Saw In You Was Just A Mirage. Just listen to the words from that song, they tell the story of love, heartache and heartbreak. Smokey is the greatest song writer ever, period.

This is a common story, especially in the Jim Crow South. My grandad had to flee Mississippi in the 1950s in the middle of the night after he beat up a white man in self-defense.
My GMA passed 3 years ago she was about to be 94 she was the second youngest of 6 her father came over on one of the last slave ships. She never talked about him. I wish I could've heard some of the things she knew about him. My mama was born in 1954 in Ga, her oldest sister is Smokey's age so talking to her and her siblings is like living through history. She actually recently told me my pops used to serve to smokey and his crew when they used to come to town 🤣.
My great grandmother passed 30 years ago and her parents were slaves the first 10 years of their lives she had some amazing stories about Slavery and Jim Crow, ADOS we are special people
