I’m all for artistic expression but I had to be done well. Fergie had some good notes sprinkled throughout but, and this is a big but, most of the performance was not good. And when it’s not good the internet will let you know by clowning you. It’s just how things are in this internetsentric era
this whole situation kind of reminds me of that episode of victorious when Tori gets dragged by as dog while singing the national anthem.
I was in choir. Our choir teacher showed us this and said if we sang the anthem like that he would disown us as a student, lol.

My choir teacher once said that the only song that the audience expect a person to get perfectly which means hitting all the notes and remembering all the lyrics to s the National Anthem. And it’s true even if you can’t see sing that is the one song that everyone will be able to tell when it’s not done in the right way.

In smaller sporting events like college games it's usually just played by the marching band and people in the crowd sing if they want, it's usually not sung by just one person

That also makes way more sense, thematically, since it's a song for an _entire country._ I never understood why we don't do it that way here - everyone always does "drag" whatever celeb for putting whatever twist on it, or just singing it in the style that they're famous for in the first place, when it's American celebrity worshipping that sets it up to a point where people are expected to be totally silent, and focused on one single person's singing. Then it becomes all about them, anyway: if they "nail it" or not, knowing they could go viral for taking a risk with it, whether or not it works. In that sense, it's pretty hypocritical to come at them for doing whatever they end up doing with it, since we're setting them up to be the focus, vs. the country and the anthem itself.
At least Fergie did not get pulled by a large dog across the room like Tori from Victorious
