    I was inspired by your design, but I couldn't find the mesh pipe. I used a PVC sewer pipe with a bunch of slots cut into it instead. By then, it was strong enough on its own that I didn't need an inner pipe. However, I think my setup was bad because buoyancy had a tendency to rip the filters from the drain manifold, so I have to weight it down from rising up. The tops of the filters are also lower than the barrel just in case the water overflows.
    I need to make a prefilter, though. It clogs WAY too quickly on my pond, so I'm making a vortex settling chamber out of an old, broken well pressure tank.

    Do you think a bottom to top version of this would work? So you have the same basic configuration as yours, but the water flows into the barrel from the bottom, underneath the disc. Also the 100mm pipe has dozens of holes drilled into it. The water enters from the bottom, flows up into the pipes, out the holes and through the sock, slowly filling the tank until the water level reaches the outflow near the top. Obviously the 100mm pipes would have to be higher than the outlet so water doesn't flow out the top of them, bypassing the sock. The drainage procedure would require a waste pipe at the bottom. When that was opened and the inlet shut off all the water would flow back down through the 100mm pipes, down to the bottom chamber and out the drain pipe. Cleaning would be the same, just slide the mesh/sock off the pipe and rinse.

      I think you will have more work with the system if you have all the dirt on the inside of the socks, it is harder to rinse..
      also, having presure from the inside of the socks might expand the socks and let the slip down the pipes.. from the outside it is pressed towards the pipes and cant slide down.
      but I think it can work.. but I think it is harder to manage and clean !

    • @pikmak920
      @pikmak920 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think cleaning it might not make much difference, because when you hit the tube with a hose from the outside, the water will pass straight through the sock material, hitting the algae from the underside and forcing it off. And if that failed you could just blast the hose down the middle of the pipe.
      The sock expansion is a potential issue however. It's one of those maybe it will, maybe it won't problems that will be hard to answer until practical testing takes place. Perhaps simply hooking the top of the sock over the top of the mesh (the sharp bits) would prevent slippage.

      it should be very easy to find, just Search "Drain Sleeve"
      and these pop up, keep in mind that you have to match 4 inch drain sleeve with the pipes you find.. or 5 inch, if that is what you prefere to make your filter from !

    Hi, you could grow so many shrimp in that filter drum. They would eat all the algae and be growing quickly. You may not need to clean it if there are enough shrimp in there.

    • @dkphantomdk
      @dkphantomdk  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      what would have been a great idea, but it would require a bit of redoing the filters, so the shrimps dont escape out into the pond..
      Also, we reach temperatures close to 0celcius some winters, maybe the shrimps wont survive that ?
      ( yet I did last year replace the Sieve and DIY filter with a RDF-filter, to save me time on cleaning - and I havent regreet that descion at all )

      thank you, a few local koi keepers here has started to make these DIY filters and they are VERY pleased with the outcome and the efficiency of this filter, also, as you said, they are stunned about how easy they are to clean out..
      Offcause it is not an automatic drumfilter, with no maintaning but it is as close as it can be.. !
      Probably one of the best DIY out there for mechanical filtration.

      They are Gutter Tubes ø120mm
      - they are normaly used to keep leaves and others out of roof gutters
      I cant tell you where you can buy them..
      - but you might try to call your local "home depo" or any other that sell gutters or building materials for home construction..
      I went straight to the manufactor and got them of the shelf.

    i am very confused at what such an elaborate filter is achieving, is it to remove solids ?, a simple and very inexpensive swirl filter is capable of that job, are you trying to export nitrates by removing algae ?, whats growing on the sides and floor of the pond would far outweigh the tiny impact cleaning a couple of pvc tubes would have, I love the build but I cant understand the purpose of it ?, please don't take this as negative, I just don't understand its purpose

    • @dkphantomdk
      @dkphantomdk  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      a svirl filter cant handle the same amount of water and debrie as this can.
      its only to removed solids, there are no bio part in this filter, and it is a cheap way to improve the mechanical filtration of the pond. ( since I only have a Sieve )

  • @telfordrock167
    @telfordrock167 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    We have been studying this build logically, (I'm no expert) I like, but I foresee a problem with your setup. Only one tube is filtering, with all pipes drilled it's better. Whoever with hundreds of holes the amount of water that can leave the system could be more than the exit pipe can accommodate, so the suction from each pipe would be gentle, this would cause all solids to fall to the bottom as you saw.
    The potential for your system lies in fine particle removal as ALL your water MUST be filtered before leaving.
    I was even thinking of sealing the bottom of your tubes from the inside, with holes drilled into the sealed plate so they can be filled with coal for fine particle filtering.
    Lastly the allege on your tubes grew there, your tank should be covered.

    • @dkphantomdk
      @dkphantomdk  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      thank you for your view on the filter.
      I agree on the "one pipe with holes" didnt give the best performance.
      But.. since the waterlevel isnt a constant in the barrel, it did equalise the dirt collected on each tube.
      first of, you claim that the drilled tube had more water running into it is true from the start.. it was the tube that got dirty first, but once it was filled with dirt, the waterlevel did rise and put more pressure at the last 4 tubes, and then they colleced dirt until they where filled..
      But.. I have used an angelgrinder to cut alot of vertical lines in the 4 tubes since I made this video, and, it does make it perform for a longer periode since the pressure is now on alot more of the surface of the filtertubing.
      the modification of the filter with the coal could be usefull but its not ment to be slow moving water, because its a big pond and if its slowed down it will not keep the algae away, I need fast water to filter as much as possible an hour.
      but modifications to suit the needs are allways an option.
      again, thank you for your intrest
